NBC News won the election-night ratings battle for the 2026 midterms, averaging more than 6.5 million viewers in primetime and beating every rival network for the first time on a midterm night in 24 years, according to preliminary Nielsen figures. The NBC election night ratings victory was powered by election analyst Steve Kornacki, whose marathon "Kornacki Cam" livestream drew a record 29 million views across platforms.

About 27 million viewers watched election coverage across the six major networks on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, up from 21.8 million in the 2022 midterms, as Americans tuned in to learn the outcome of contests that decided control of Congress. NBC finished first in total viewers and in both key advertising demographics, a clean sweep that capped a night in which data-driven coverage became the story itself.

What Happened

When the first polls closed on the evening of November 3, 2026, viewers had a crowded field of election-night broadcasts to choose from, and they chose NBC in record numbers for a midterm. Preliminary Nielsen ratings reported on November 4 put NBC's primetime average above 6.5 million viewers, comfortably ahead of ABC at about 5.1 million. CNN and MS NOW each averaged about 4.16 million, Fox News drew about 4.04 to 4.08 million, and CBS finished last at about 2.63 to 2.73 million.

The total audience of about 27 million marked a sharp rise from the 21.8 million who watched midterm coverage in 2022. NBC beat its nearest rival by roughly 1.4 million viewers in primetime, and it also won the demographics advertisers prize most, with 2.93 million viewers aged 25 to 54 and 2.46 million aged 18 to 49.

At the centre of the night was Kornacki, the network's national political correspondent, who has turned election-night number-crunching into appointment television. His "Kornacki Cam" livestream ran for 10 and a half hours, a single-camera marathon of vote-count analysis that drew 29 million views across platforms, including 6.1 million on YouTube, where it ranked as the number one election livestream of the night. It ended in memorable fashion: after promising viewers a five-minute break, Kornacki never returned, closing the stream at 3:26 a.m. Eastern Time. He later explained on X that he had planned to go for 13 hours but had to stop early.

Background/Context

Election-night ratings have long been a proxy war among American television networks, a once-every-two-years contest for prestige as much as advertising revenue.

NBC's drought makes this win notable. The network had not led a midterm election night in total viewers for 24 years, a stretch covering more than a decade of cable-news dominance and the rise of streaming alternatives. Kornacki has become a fixture of that change since his breakout during the 2020 presidential count, when marathon sessions at the big board turned him into a cult figure. Related coverage on US News Pulse followed the night as it unfolded, including the first midterm exit polls showing 70% of voters wanting Congress to check President Donald Trump and live coverage of Americans voting as control of Congress hung in the balance.

NBC Election Night Ratings: How the Networks Compared

The preliminary Nielsen table tells a clear story. NBC's primetime average of more than 6.5 million viewers put it first by a wide margin, with ABC second at roughly 5.1 million, CNN and MS NOW tied at about 4.16 million each, Fox News at about 4.04 to 4.08 million, and CBS trailing at about 2.63 to 2.73 million. The demographic breakdown underlined NBC's strength, with 2.93 million viewers aged 25 to 54 and 2.46 million aged 18 to 49, both leading the field.

Streaming added a second front, and there NBC's advantage was even larger. The 29 million views for the "Kornacki Cam" livestream dwarfed the linear audiences of several rival networks, and its 6.1 million YouTube views alone made it the platform's top election livestream.

Reactions/Quotes

Kornacki addressed his abrupt exit directly the next day, explaining on X that he had planned a 13-hour shift but had to stop early, after telling viewers he would take a five-minute break at 3:26 a.m. and then not returning. TV Insider and The Wrap both highlighted the "Kornacki Cam" figures as the standout statistic of the night and a sign that the livestream had become as important to NBC's election brand as its main broadcast.

Why It Matters

First, the ratings reset the hierarchy of election-night television: a broadcast network beating cable rivals on a midterm night, after a 24-year gap, shows that old broadcast reach still matters when combined with a streaming strategy that meets younger viewers where they already are. Second, the "Kornacki Cam" numbers point to a format shift, with long livestreams built around a single trusted analyst now able to compete with polished studio shows, a model rivals are likely to copy for 2028. Third, the audience growth signals civic engagement: a midterm audience up by more than five million on 2022 suggests voters treated this election as unusually consequential.

What Happens Next

Final Nielsen ratings will confirm or adjust the preliminary figures in the coming days, and networks will study the demographic and streaming breakdowns closely as they plan for 2028. NBC will look to defend its newly won election-night crown, while rivals will weigh how to answer the "Kornacki Cam" model. The aftermath of the midterms will keep audiences engaged, from leadership fights to the fallout inside both parties; US News Pulse has already covered House Speaker Mike Johnson stepping aside after the midterm rout.
