Vice President JD Vance is seeking to build a new political alliance with disaffected supporters of President Donald Trump, according to Fox News Digital, in a move reshaping the Republican contest for 2028. The report, published on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, citing sources familiar with Vance's thinking, says he is courting voters who still support Trump but feel betrayed by parts of his foreign policy. One source summed up the message in three words: "Vance is our guy." The JD Vance new right alliance is not presented as a break with the president, but as an effort to hold together a coalition that delivered Trump the White House and has just watched Republicans lose Congress in the 2026 midterms.

The timing matters. Vance's reported outreach came on the same day as a White House meeting on Wednesday morning aimed at aligning post-midterm messaging, after which, Fox reported, Vance took control of his own message. Democrats stood at 54 Senate seats to 44 and 237 House seats by Wednesday afternoon, with Alaska still being counted. Vance, widely seen as a leading 2028 Republican contender alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio, is positioning himself as the candidate of voters who want the movement without, in their view, its costliest foreign entanglements.

Key Points

• Fox News Digital reported on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, citing sources, that Vice President JD Vance is seeking to forge a new alliance with disaffected Trump voters ahead of the 2028 election cycle.
• After a White House meeting on Wednesday morning on post-midterm messaging, Vance took control of his own messaging, breaking with President Donald Trump on foreign policy and America's relationship with Israel, the report said.
• A source described Vance's four-task rallying cry to the "new right": end the war in Iran, focus on the cost of living and inflation, put America first, and "change our relationship with Israel".
• The source stressed this is not a separation from Trump in the style of former Vice President Mike Pence, but a message to Republicans who support Trump yet feel betrayed by his foreign policy.
• The White House did not return Fox News Digital's request for comment on the report.

What Happened

According to Fox News Digital, Vance's pitch targets voters who back Trump but believe his presidency has drifted from the promises that won them over, above all on foreign wars. The report describes him building an alliance rather than launching a campaign, a distinction that matters in a party where open disloyalty to Trump has historically been punished. By framing the effort as an alliance of the disaffected, Vance can speak to frustration without declaring himself an opponent of the president he serves.

Background/Context

The backdrop is the Republican Party's worst election night in years. Voters delivered Democrats a majority in both chambers of Congress on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, ending unified Republican control in Washington and handing the opposition power to investigate the administration, block its legislation and shape the final two years of Trump's term. The scale of the defeat is still coming into focus, with Alaska still being counted, but the direction is unmistakable.

JD Vance and the New Right Alliance

The phrase "new right" has long described a younger, more nationalist and more sceptical wing of American conservatism, less attached to the free-market and interventionist orthodoxies of the older Republican establishment. What is new here is the suggestion that Vance is trying to organise that wing explicitly around the grievances of Trump voters themselves, rather than around think-tank ideas. The alliance, as described, is defined less by abstract ideology than by three concrete tests: no more foreign wars, lower costs for families, and closed borders.

Reactions/Quotes

The most telling reaction so far may be the absence of one. The White House did not return Fox News Digital's request for comment, leaving the report unchallenged but also unconfirmed. That silence fits a White House still working out its own post-midterm message, and a president who has so far treated Vance's public criticism of the war with relative restraint, even while questioning whether he will run in 2028.

Why It Matters

The report matters because it suggests the fight for the Republican Party's future is already under way, barely a day after its midterm defeat, and because it is being fought over the voters Trump himself brought into the party. If Vance succeeds in organising disaffected Trump voters into a "new right" bloc, he would enter the 2028 primary with a ready-made base no other candidate could easily replicate. If he fails, or if Trump turns against the effort, he risks being seen as disloyal by the very movement he hopes to lead. A vice president running a distinct message on foreign policy while still in office also creates a second centre of gravity inside the administration.

What Happens Next

In the short term, the test will be what Vance says and does next. If he continues to break with Trump on foreign policy and on America's relationship with Israel, and keeps returning to the cost of living, the Fox report will look like the opening chapter of a 2028 campaign in all but name. If he falls back into line with the White House message, it will look like a trial balloon that was quickly deflated. The midterm count is not yet finished, with Alaska still being counted, and the new Congress will not convene until January 2027. For voters, the practical question is whether the "new right" pitch translates into policy, since ending a war, lowering costs and closing borders require action by a president, not just a vice president's message.
