Senator Ted Cruz did not soften the blow. In a lengthy post on X on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the Texas Republican called the Democrats' midterm sweep a "blue tsunami" — and then said the words that will echo through Texas politics for years: "Texas is blue."

The verdict from one of the Senate's most combative conservatives landed a day after Democrats won both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections and swept every statewide race in Texas. Cruz called the result "an ass kicking" and a "Watergate-level repudiation" of his own party, blaming the cost of living, tariffs and the prolonged war with Iran.

Key Points

• Ted Cruz said the 2026 midterms were "not simply a blue wave; it was a blue tsunami" and "an ass kicking" for Republicans.
• Democrats swept every statewide race in Texas, including the Senate race, the governor's race, the lieutenant governor's race and the attorney general's race.
• James Talarico defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Senate race — the first Democratic Senate win in Texas in nearly four decades.
• Gina Hinojosa unseated longtime Governor Greg Abbott, ending more than a decade of Republican control of the governor's office.
• Cruz blamed high prices, tariffs and the Iran war, saying Republicans "alienated rural America" — and vowed: "Texas will be red again."

What Happened

Cruz published his assessment on X on Wednesday, a day after the polls closed, as the scale of the Democratic victory became clear. He had already warned that Democrats would use their new congressional majorities to impeach President Donald Trump repeatedly — but this post was an autopsy of his own party, written in public, in blunt language.

"2026 was not simply a blue wave; it was a blue tsunami. It was an ass kicking," Cruz wrote. "It was not simply a bad 2006 midterm election. It was a Watergate-level repudiation."

The Texas results gave his words their force. Talarico beat Paxton for the US Senate seat — the first Democratic Senate win in Texas in nearly forty years — and Hinojosa defeated Abbott, governor since 2015. Democrats also took the lieutenant governor's and attorney general's offices. Cruz said he had telephoned Talarico to congratulate him, describing the call as a "pleasant conversation."

Background: How Texas Turned Blue Overnight

Texas has been the anchor of the Republican electoral map for a generation: no Democrat had won a statewide race there in more than thirty years. That is what made Tuesday's results so shocking — and why Cruz's reaction carried so much weight.

The midterm elections delivered Democrats control of both the House and the Senate after a year of economic frustration. Voters told pollsters that the cost of living was their first concern: prices for food, fuel and insurance stayed high through the autumn, and tariffs pushed costs higher still. The war with Iran, now in its ninth month, deepened the damage — President Trump acknowledged on Wednesday that it played a role in his party's losses.

The sweep was not limited to Texas: Democrats also won the California governor's race. But Texas was the prize that mattered most, and the one Republicans had been most certain of keeping.

Ted Cruz and the "Blue Tsunami" in Texas

Cruz saved his sharpest language for his home state. "Nowhere are the consequences of this election greater than Texas," he wrote. "In the Lone Star State, we lost every single statewide election."

Then came the sentence that instantly became the story: "Texas is blue. That is a hard sentence to utter. But Texas, today at least, is blue."

His explanation was economic before it was political. "Food is too high, gas is too high, diesel is too high, insurance is too high, life is too high," Cruz wrote. He added tariffs and the prolonged Iran war, and said the party had "alienated rural America" — a striking charge from a senator whose own base has long been rural Texas.

Reactions

Cruz's post drew immediate attention across the political spectrum, because it broke with the defiant tone coming from other Republicans: where some blamed the media or the courts, Cruz blamed the record itself — prices, tariffs and a war that voters had grown tired of paying for. Trump acknowledged on Wednesday that the Iran war had played a role in the Republican losses, while insisting he stood by the decision. Cruz closed with a promise rather than a concession: "We will bring Texas back. Texas will be red again."

Why It Matters

Texas is the largest Republican state in the country, with 40 electoral votes. A Democratic sweep of its statewide offices is not a normal midterm swing; it is a structural shock. Talarico's Senate win gives Democrats a seat they have not held in Texas for nearly four decades, and Hinojosa's victory hands the party the governor's office — with control of redistricting and election administration.

The result also rewrites the map for 2028: if Texas is genuinely competitive, Republicans must defend ground they once took for granted. And it changes how Washington works now — Democrats hold both chambers of Congress, and the new majorities take their seats on January 3, 2027. Cruz's earlier warning about repeated impeachment attempts against Trump now reads less like a prediction and more like a description of the calendar ahead.

What Happens Next

Talarico will take his Senate seat when the new Congress convenes, and Hinojosa will be sworn in as governor. The new Democratic majorities will set their agendas and begin the investigations and legislative fights Cruz warned about — including, he has said, repeated efforts to impeach the president.

For Republicans, the reckoning is only beginning: House Speaker Mike Johnson has already said he will not seek to stay on as House Republican leader, and a leadership contest is under way. Cruz himself is not going anywhere — his promise to bring Texas back suggests he intends to lead the effort to win it back.
