WASHINGTON — About seven in ten voters under 30 backed the Democratic candidate in their local US House race in Tuesday's midterms, according to the AP Voter Poll, a survey of more than 100,000 voters. It was a sharp break from 2024, when the same age group was roughly split between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. Voters aged 18 to 29 backed Democrats 72 per cent to 25 per cent, and first-time voters aged 18 to 24 backed them by 76 per cent to 21 per cent, the clearest young voters midterm 2026 verdict of election night.

Key Points

• About 7 in 10 voters under 30 backed Democrats in their House race, against about 3 in 10 for Republicans.
• Aged 18 to 29, voters backed Democrats 72 per cent to 25 per cent; first-time voters aged 18 to 24, 76 per cent to 21 per cent.
• Young men flipped hardest: 55 per cent backed Trump in 2024, but in 2026 gave Democrats a one-point edge.
• Republican support among women under 30 fell from 31 per cent in 2024 to 13 per cent.
• Young voters shifted toward Democrats in every Senate race the party flipped,

What Happened

The AP Voter Poll, conducted by SSRS for AP, ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News Media, NBC News and Versant, interviewed voters from October 19 to November 3 in Alaska and October 22 to November 3 elsewhere. Among voters under 30, Democrats won roughly seven in ten votes in House races, a margin of about 47 points. The shift was not confined to one region: young voters moved toward Democrats in every Senate contest the party flipped, in the Senate contests the party flipped.

The most striking finding concerned young men. In 2024 they backed Trump 55 per cent to 42 per cent, according to AP VoteCast. In 2026 the same group gave Democrats a one-point edge, a swing of more than a dozen points. Democrats also regained ground elsewhere: about six in ten Hispanic voters backed them, and only about one in ten Black men backed the Republican, down from about a quarter for Trump in 2024.

Background: A Generation That Was Up for Grabs

The youth vote has swung sharply in both directions over the past decade. In 2020 voters under 30 backed Joe Biden by a wide margin. In 2024 the group split roughly evenly between Trump and Harris, and Trump won young men outright, a result that stunned Democratic strategists.

Before the midterms there were signs the tide might turn. A Harvard Youth Poll in late October found Democrats leading 58 to 32 among young men who definitely planned to vote, and 63 per cent of voters aged 18 to 29 said they planned to vote against Trump. The cost of living was the top concern for young voters, cited by 79 per cent, ahead of corporate power and the trade war.

Young Voters Midterm 2026: The Numbers Behind the Swing

The poll's value lies in its size. With more than 100,000 interviews across all 50 states, it can break the electorate into slices too small for ordinary polls to measure reliably, and those slices show a youth shift that was broad rather than narrow. It was not driven by one state or one subgroup: young voters moved left in the Senate races Democrats flipped, in House races across the country, and among both men and women.

There is an important caveat, and the poll itself supplies it. Voters under 30 made up only about one in ten of the 2026 electorate, so even a large swing among the young could only move the overall result by a limited amount. But the voters who cast their first ballots in 2026 will be voting for decades, and the party that wins their first elections often keeps them. A 76-to-21 margin among first-time voters is the kind of result that shapes a generation's politics.

Reactions and Quotes

Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican, acknowledged the scale of the defeat in blunt terms, calling it a "blue tsunami" and admitting that "Texas, today at least, is blue". Cruz blamed the cost of living, saying "Food is too high, gas is too high, diesel is too high, insurance is too high, life is too high", and listed the groups Republicans had lost.

Analysts cautioned against reading too much into a single election. Young voters have low turnout in midterms, and the under-30s who voted in 2026 were more Democratic-leaning than the age group as a whole. The question is whether it was a reaction to a particular moment — high prices, an unpopular war and a president whose approval had fallen to 38 per cent — or the start of a longer realignment.

Why It Matters

The youth swing matters for three reasons. First, it helped decide the Senate: Democrats flipped seats in Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio and North Carolina, and young voters moved toward Democrats in every one of those races. Second, it changes the shape of both parties' coalitions, leaving Republicans with a serious problem among the voters who will dominate the electorate in the 2030s.

Third, it sits alongside the poll's other findings, that Democrats regained Hispanic voters, Black men, moderates and lower-income households, to suggest a broad repudiation driven above all by the cost of living. The result also reframes 2024: Trump's gains among young voters were widely treated as permanent, but the 2026 numbers suggest they were, at least in part, a protest vote against the incumbent party of the time.

What Happens Next

Both parties will now compete openly for the youth vote ahead of the 2028 presidential election, shaped by the cost of living, housing, student debt and the war in Iran. Democrats will try to hold their rebuilt coalition; Republicans will try to win back the ground they lost. Whether the verdict lasts will be decided in 2028, but the 2026 midterms have already made the youth vote the most important battleground in American politics.
