China has indicted former Politburo member Ma Xingrui on charges of taking bribes, state news agency Xinhua reported on Thursday, in the latest wave of President Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign.

Prosecutors in Yichang, in the central province of Hubei, filed the case with the city's Intermediate People's Court after an investigation by the National Commission of Supervision. They accuse Ma of using his posts and influence to seek benefits for others and accepting bribes described as particularly large.

The indictment moves Ma from party discipline to the criminal courts, seven months after he was placed under investigation and four months after he was expelled from the Communist Party. No trial date has been announced.

What Happened

The Supreme People's Procuratorate announced the indictment on Thursday, according to Xinhua. The case was filed by prosecutors in Yichang, a city in Hubei province, with the Yichang Intermediate People's Court, after an investigation by the National Commission of Supervision.

Prosecutors say Ma used his positions and standing to seek benefits for other people and took bribes in return. The sums were described as particularly large in the official announcement. No figure was given, and no trial date was announced.

Ma, who joined the Politburo in 2022, is the most senior political figure charged in the current round of the campaign. His fall has unfolded in public stages: investigation in April, expulsion in July, confirmation at the plenum that ended on October 29, and now a formal indictment.

Background: Ma Xingrui's Rise Through Space, Guangdong and Xinjiang

Ma's career crossed some of the most important posts in the Chinese system. He served as general manager of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the state-owned contractor behind much of China's space programme, before moving into provincial politics.

He later became deputy party secretary and governor of Guangdong, China's largest provincial economy, and party secretary of Shenzhen, the southern technology hub. He then served as Communist Party chief of Xinjiang until 2025, before his investigation began in April 2026.

He was elevated to the Politburo, the party's top decision-making body, in 2022 — and sitting or former Politburo members are almost never charged with crimes.

Ma Xingrui Bribery Indictment: What Prosecutors Allege

The charge is taking bribes, and the allegation is built around the range of posts Ma held over three decades. Prosecutors say he used his positions and his status to seek benefits for others, and accepted bribes described as particularly large in exchange.

The case was brought in Yichang rather than in Beijing or where Ma worked, a familiar pattern in high-level Chinese corruption cases, where trials are held away from the defendant's power base. The investigation was run by the National Commission of Supervision, the state anti-graft agency that works alongside the party's discipline inspectors.

Ma was first placed under investigation in April 2026 for suspected serious violations of party discipline and national laws. In July he was expelled from the Communist Party and dismissed from public office. Last week, the fifth plenary session of the 20th Central Committee, which concluded on October 29, confirmed his expulsion along with those of 32 other officials.

Reactions

There was no immediate public comment from Ma or from anyone speaking for him, and no statement from his family has been reported. Chinese state media carried the indictment as a brief official announcement, without further detail on the evidence or on when a trial might begin.

The list of 33 officials expelled at the plenum shows how wide the current purge runs. Alongside Ma were former senior military leader Zhang Youxia, former senior diplomat Liu Jianchao and former industry minister Jin Zhuanglong; it is not yet clear how many of them will face criminal charges.

Why It Matters

First, the indictment reaches the very top of the party. A Politburo member since 2022, Ma sat on the body that makes China's most important decisions. Charging him shows that the campaign, now in its fourteenth year under Xi, still has no rank it will not touch.

Second, the case spans Ma's whole career, from the space industry to Guangdong, Shenzhen and Xinjiang. That breadth suggests investigators looked across decades of appointments, and it will raise questions in every institution he led.

Third, the timing matters. The indictment comes days after the plenum confirmed the expulsions, as Xi's leadership tightens control over the military, the diplomatic service and industry. For officials watching, the message is that no record of service protects against a bribery charge.

What Happens Next

The case now moves to the Yichang Intermediate People's Court, which will set a trial date. In high-level bribery cases the court stage is usually short, with a verdict often following within weeks or months. The sentence will depend on the size of the bribes and on whether Ma cooperated.

Attention will also turn to the other officials expelled at the plenum, including Zhang Youxia, Liu Jianchao and Jin Zhuanglong. If more indictments follow, this becomes the largest single round of senior graft cases since the campaign began.
