Novo Nordisk raised its 2026 outlook for the third time this year on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, after sales of its Wegovy pill beat forecasts. The Novo Nordisk Wegovy pill brought in 5.39 billion Danish kroner, about $810 million, in the third quarter, up 53 percent on the previous quarter and well ahead of the 4.62 billion kroner analysts had expected.

The pill, launched in the United States in January 2026, has passed eight million prescriptions since launch and holds roughly 80 percent of the American oral obesity market. Adjusted sales rose 6 percent to 79.2 billion kroner and adjusted operating profit jumped 27 percent to 31.72 billion kroner, both beating forecasts. 2026 adjusted sales and operating profit growth of between a 2 percent decline and 2 percent growth at constant exchange rates, up from a previous range of a 6 percent decline to flat.

Key Points

• Wegovy pill sales hit 5.39 billion Danish kroner ($810 million) in Q3 2026, up 53 percent from Q2 and above the 4.62 billion kroner consensus.
• About 3.6 million US prescriptions were written in the quarter, taking the total past eight million since the January 2026 launch, with about 80 percent of the US oral obesity market.
• Novo raised its 2026 outlook for the third time, now expecting adjusted sales and operating profit growth of minus 2 percent to plus 2 percent at constant exchange rates.
• Q3 adjusted sales rose 6 percent to 79.2 billion kroner and adjusted operating profit rose 27 percent to 31.72 billion kroner, both beating forecasts.
• From January 1, 2027, Novo will cut the US list price of Wegovy by about 50 percent and Ozempic by about 35 percent, both to $675 a month; the pill reaches 20-plus countries by mid-2027.

What Happened

Novo Nordisk reported third-quarter results on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. Adjusted earnings were 89 cents per American depositary receipt, beating the 81-cent consensus, while revenues of $12.19 billion rose 4 percent at constant exchange rates and topped the $11.39 billion analysts had forecast.

The Wegovy pill was the standout, adding 4.18 billion kroner of US sales and 1.22 billion kroner internationally, with roughly 3.6 million prescriptions in the quarter. Novo called it the strongest-ever launch of a GLP-1 medicine by volume in the United States, and the broader Wegovy franchise kept more than half of new patient starts in the branded American obesity market. The contrast elsewhere was sharp: Wegovy injectable sales fell 2 percent to 20.41 billion kroner as a 13 percent US decline outweighed 16 percent growth abroad, and Ozempic sales fell 5 percent to 29.71 billion kroner, with US sales down 11 percent on lower volumes and wholesaler inventories.

Background: How the Wegovy Pill Took Off

Wegovy began as a weekly injection, the only way to take semaglutide, the active ingredient behind Wegovy and Ozempic. A daily pill removes the needle, the refrigeration and the injection training, opening treatment to people who would never have considered a weekly shot. Since its January 2026 US launch, more than eight million prescriptions have been written. The pill is sold in eight markets, with launches planned in more than 20 countries by mid-2027. Novo's shares have lost 21 percent this year against a 24 percent rise for the wider industry.

Wegovy Pill Sales Drive Novo Nordisk's Third Upgrade

The upgrade shows how much the pill matters to Novo. The company now expects 2026 adjusted sales growth of minus 2 percent to plus 2 percent at constant exchange rates, up from minus 6 percent to flat, with the same revised range for operating profit. Profitability improved sharply: the adjusted gross margin widened to 82.1 percent from 76.1 percent a year earlier on transformation savings, productivity gains and favourable currencies, while adjusted cost of goods sold fell 16 percent to 14.18 billion kroner. Reported operating profit fell 9 percent to 23.01 billion kroner, reflecting 8.7 billion kroner of non-cash impairments tied to the cardiovascular candidate ziltivekimab after its ZEUS and HERMES studies missed their primary endpoints.

Reactions and Analyst Views

Investors welcomed the numbers, with shares rising about 6 percent on Wednesday after a difficult year in which the stock has fallen 21 percent. Analysts at Zacks Investment Research said the earnings and sales beat, with the higher 2026 outlook, "reflects improving momentum in its obesity franchise", adding: "Strong uptake of Wegovy pill is particularly encouraging, providing an additional growth avenue as injectable sales face pricing pressure." The same analysts cautioned that "weakness in the diabetes franchise, particularly Ozempic, and intensifying competition in the GLP-1 market could continue to weigh on growth", and that lower realised prices remain a concern because higher volumes may not mean proportionately higher revenue.

Why It Matters

The Wegovy pill's success matters far beyond Novo's share price. It is reshaping the economics of the world's fastest-growing drug category and, potentially, obesity treatment for tens of millions of people. A daily pill is cheaper to make, easier to ship and simpler to take than a weekly injection, changing who can be treated and at what cost. The price cuts underline the point: from January 1, 2027, Wegovy's US list price falls about 50 percent and Ozempic's about 35 percent, both to $675 a month, down from well over $1,000. For patients, cheaper prices and a pill format could widen access substantially, as global markets slide on worries about the pace of returns on heavy AI spending

What Happens Next

Novo's priority is the accelerated international rollout, with launches in more than 20 countries by mid-2027. The January 2027 price cuts are the next big test: halving Wegovy's list price will squeeze margins even as it boosts volumes. Either way, the pill has changed the company: Novo Nordisk is now, above all, a Wegovy pill company, and its fortunes rise and fall with the little daily tablet behind one of the most successful drug launches in history.
