Australia's oldest department store has collapsed. David Jones, the 188-year-old retailer trading continuously in Sydney since 1838, was placed into voluntary administration on Thursday, November 5, 2026, putting about 6,000 jobs at risk seven weeks before Christmas. The board appointed McGrathNicol as voluntary administrator on Thursday morning, and the secured lender then appointed FTI Consulting as receivers to run the business while a buyer or a recapitalisation is sought. Stores and the website keep trading, but closures and job losses are expected.

Key Points

• David Jones, founded in Sydney in 1838, entered voluntary administration on November 5, 2026, a first in its 188-year history.
• McGrathNicol is the voluntary administrator; FTI Consulting, appointed receiver by the secured lender, will run the business while a sale is sought.
• The collapse followed failed talks with landlord Scentre Group, operator of Westfield centres and landlord to 17 of the chain's 38 stores.
• About 6,000 jobs are at risk. The chain lost A$95.5 million before tax in the year to June 2025 as sales fell 8.7 percent to A$2 billion.
• Stores and the website continue to trade under the receivers, with a sale or recapitalisation the stated goal.

What Happened

The end came quickly on Thursday morning. The board appointed McGrathNicol as voluntary administrator, and the secured lender then appointed FTI Consulting as receivers. The receivers will keep the business trading while they seek a buyer or a recapitalisation, a process that will decide how many of the 38 stores across Australia and New Zealand survive.

The immediate trigger was the breakdown of talks with Scentre Group, the landlord behind the Westfield centres and landlord to 17 of the chain's stores. Scentre said David Jones had not paid rent since September 30. It holds about $30 million in bank guarantees from the retailer, equal to about eight months' gross rent, and said a generous offer to keep the stores trading had been rejected.

The collapse comes at the worst moment in the retail calendar. With seven weeks to Christmas, the chain enters its most important trading period under administrators. The receivers have not yet said how many stores might close, but closures and job losses are expected.

Background

David Jones was founded in Sydney in 1838 by the Welsh immigrant whose name it still carries, and it describes itself as the world's oldest continuously operating department store. For generations it has been a fixture of Australian high streets and Christmas shopping.

South Africa's Woolworths Holdings sold the chain to Anchorage Capital Partners in 2022 and 2023 for about A$100 million, but trading kept weakening. Like department stores worldwide, David Jones has been squeezed by online shopping, discount rivals and rising costs, while its large city stores carry heavy rents.

The financial pressure was already clear in its last reported results. The chain posted a pre-tax loss of A$95.5 million in the year to June 2025, with sales down 8.7 percent to A$2 billion. That left little room for a rent dispute with its biggest landlord or another rate rise.

David Jones Collapse: How the Retail Icon Reached Administration

The David Jones collapse was the result of years of strain, not one bad season. Sales had been falling, losses were mounting, and the business carried the costs of large stores in expensive locations as shoppers spent more online and less on discretionary goods.

The final blow was the failure to reach a deal with Scentre Group. With rent unpaid since the end of September and the landlord holding $30 million in bank guarantees, the talks that might have kept the chain trading ran out of road. Once the lender appointed receivers, the board had no choice but to place the company into voluntary administration.

The wider economy made rescue harder. The Reserve Bank of Australia raised its cash rate for the fifth time this year just two days earlier, to 4.85 percent, the highest in 18 years. Higher borrowing costs have squeezed household budgets and made shoppers more cautious, the worst conditions for a struggling department store. Australia's central bank raised rates to 4.85 percent on Election Day as inflation stayed high.

Reactions

Scentre Group has made clear where it stands: David Jones had not paid rent since September 30, it holds about $30 million in bank guarantees, and a generous offer to keep the stores trading had been rejected.

For the roughly 6,000 people who work for the chain, the announcement brings weeks of uncertainty. The administrators' first task is to keep the stores open and trading, and the receivers will assess each store on its merits as they search for a buyer. Shoppers can still buy in store and online, and the fate of gift cards and loyalty benefits is among the details the administrators have yet to confirm.

Why It Matters

The fall of David Jones matters well beyond one retailer. About 6,000 jobs hang in the balance, and the timing means the impact will be felt by staff, suppliers and shopping centres at the busiest time of the year. The chain is also an anchor tenant in many Westfield centres, so closures would leave large holes in Australia's biggest malls.

The collapse is also a warning for the wider retail sector. If a 188-year-old institution cannot survive rising rents, higher interest rates and cautious consumers, other traditional retailers will be watching closely. The sale process will show whether buyers still see value in the department store model.

What Happens Next

The receivers will now run a sale process, inviting interest from buyers and investors willing to recapitalise the business. Each of the 38 stores will be assessed, and the strongest locations are the most likely to find a new owner. A creditors' meeting will be called in the coming days, as required under Australian rules.

Christmas trading will be watched closely. A strong festive season would make the chain more attractive to buyers, while weak sales would increase the pressure for closures. For now the stores stay open and the website keeps trading. The coming weeks will decide whether the world's oldest continuously operating department store survives its 188th year.
