Six people were killed and seven others were injured when a three-alarm fire tore through a two-storey home in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighbourhood early on Thursday. The blaze at 653 58th Street broke out in the early hours of the morning, and firefighters spent about three hours bringing it under control as flames spread to a neighbouring home. A lithium-ion battery found at the scene is now being investigated, although no cause has been confirmed.

Key Points

• Six adults were killed and seven people were injured, including three firefighters, in a three-alarm house fire in Brooklyn's Sunset Park early on Thursday 5 November 2026.
• The fire broke out at 653 58th Street; the FDNY received the call at 1:39 a.m. and had the blaze under control by 4:28 a.m.
• Four victims were pronounced dead at the scene and two others, a man and a woman, died in hospital after being taken there in critical condition.
• A lithium-ion battery was found at the scene and hazmat crews were called in, but the fire marshal has not confirmed what caused the fire.
• Flames spread to a neighbouring home, and the identities and ages of the six victims had not been released by Thursday morning.

What Happened

The fire was reported at 1:39 a.m. on Thursday, when the FDNY was called to 653 58th Street in Sunset Park, a residential neighbourhood in south-west Brooklyn. Crews found a two-storey home heavily involved in flames, and the incident was quickly raised to three alarms.

In total, 74 units and 231 fire and emergency medical personnel responded to the blaze. Firefighters worked through the early hours, and the fire was brought under control at 4:28 a.m., about three hours after the first call. Flames had also spread to a neighbouring home.

Four adults were pronounced dead at the scene. Two more victims, a man and a woman, were taken to hospital in critical condition and later died there. All six victims were adults. Seven other people were injured, including three firefighters hurt while tackling the blaze. Officials had not released the victims' identities or ages by Thursday morning, and it was not clear how many people were inside the home when the fire broke out.

Brooklyn House Fire: The Lithium-Ion Battery Question

One detail has drawn particular attention: a lithium-ion battery was found inside the home, and hazardous materials crews were called in as a precaution. The city's fire marshal is investigating whether the battery played a role in starting the fire, but no cause has been confirmed.

Lithium-ion batteries have been at the centre of a growing number of deadly fires across New York City in recent years, most often linked to e-bikes and scooters, and the FDNY has repeatedly warned residents about the dangers of damaged, overcharged or uncertified batteries.

Investigators will now work through the damaged building to establish where the fire began and how it spread so quickly. That process can take days, and officials have said they will not speculate on a cause until the fire marshal's examination is complete. Until then, the battery remains a line of inquiry rather than a confirmed cause.

Reactions and Quotes

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed the six deaths on Thursday morning. FDNY First Deputy Commissioner Daniel Flynn described the blaze as a “terrible tragedy”, a brief statement that captured the mood on a street where neighbours woke to sirens, smoke and dozens of fire trucks.

The loss of six lives in a single residential fire is a heavy blow for Sunset Park, a close-knit neighbourhood of two-storey homes like the one on 58th Street. The deaths, along with injuries to three firefighters, underline how dangerous the fire was even for trained crews in protective gear.

Officials have so far released little beyond the confirmed toll and the outline of the response, and the victims had not been publicly identified by Thursday morning, while relatives are notified. That leaves basic questions unanswered, including who the victims were and what brought them to the house that night.

Why It Matters

Six deaths in a single house fire is an unusually heavy toll, and it will renew attention on residential fire safety in New York City, from working smoke alarms and escape routes to the risks of lithium-ion batteries kept inside homes. Fires that kill several people in one building are rare, and each one prompts the same questions about what could have prevented it.

The possible battery link matters beyond this one fire. New York has spent the past few years tightening rules around e-bike and scooter batteries after a run of deadly blazes, and any confirmed connection here would add urgency to that work. If the battery turns out to be unrelated, the fire still shows how fast a blaze can overwhelm a home in the early hours, when residents are asleep and have the least time to react.

The injuries to three firefighters are also a reminder of the risks crews face at large residential fires, and of how intense this blaze was.

What Happens Next

The fire marshal's investigation will determine whether the lithium-ion battery found at the scene caused the fire or was simply present in the home. Investigators will examine the remains of the building, interview survivors and neighbours, and piece together the fire's path through the house.

The identities of the six victims are expected to be released once their families have been notified, and officials are likely to update the condition of the seven injured people, including the three firefighters. The neighbouring home damaged by the flames will also need to be assessed, and displaced residents will need somewhere to stay.

Any findings could shape the city's next steps on battery safety and fire prevention. For now, the focus in Sunset Park is on the six people who did not survive the night, and on a neighbourhood coming to terms with a sudden and devastating loss.
