Sony's profit jumped 45% in its latest quarter as a blockbuster Spider-Man film and a surging PlayStation business beat analyst expectations by a wide margin. The Japanese entertainment giant reported on Thursday 5 November 2026 that operating profit for its fiscal second quarter rose to 622.3 billion yen, about $3.95 billion, well above the 505 billion yen average forecast from 12 analysts polled by LSEG.

What Happened

Sony reported its results for the three months to the end of September 2026 on Thursday. Operating profit rose 45% from a year earlier to 622.3 billion yen, beating the LSEG consensus of 505 billion yen by more than 23%. Earnings per share climbed 47.9% to 76.49 yen, and net sales increased 10.3% to 3,429.4 billion yen.

The games division was the biggest driver. Operating profit in the unit that houses PlayStation jumped 83% to 220.1 billion yen, helped by higher revenue from network services and first-party software. PlayStation's monthly active users reached 127 million, up from 119 million a year earlier. Hardware told a different story: Sony shipped 2.6 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the quarter, down from 4 million a year earlier, as the console ages and demand shifts toward software and services.

The film business delivered the most dramatic swing. Operating income at Sony Pictures surged 568% to 92.6 billion yen, powered by theatrical revenues from "Spider-Man: Brand New Day", and Motion Pictures revenue rose to 290 billion yen from 105.3 billion yen a year earlier. Encouraged by the quarter, Sony lifted its full-year guidance: sales of 13,000 billion yen, up from 12,500 billion yen, and operating income of 1,870 billion yen, up from 1,720 billion yen.

Sony Profit Jumps 45%: Games and Pictures Lead the Way

The headline number tells only part of the story. Sony's 45% profit jump was powered by two entertainment divisions at once. Games contributed 220.1 billion yen of operating profit, more than a third of the group total, while Pictures added 92.6 billion yen after a far weaker year-earlier period. Together, the two divisions show a company whose earnings now depend on content and services as much as on the devices that carry them.

The games result reflects a structural shift in how PlayStation makes money. Console shipments are falling as the PlayStation 5 matures, yet profit is rising because players spend more on games, subscriptions and digital services. Monthly active users of 127 million is the clearest evidence of that shift. Pictures, meanwhile, showed the upside of a franchise strategy: "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" drove Motion Pictures revenue to 290 billion yen from 105.3 billion yen, and the division's operating income rose almost sevenfold. A single release can transform a quarter, but it also concentrates risk, since the division's fortunes swing with the release calendar.

Background and Context

Sony's transformation from an electronics manufacturer into an entertainment group has been under way for more than a decade. The company that once defined itself by televisions and Walkmans now earns most of its profit from games, music, films and image sensors, and a network of more than 120 million monthly active PlayStation users gives it recurring revenue that hardware sales alone never provided. Nintendo, which reported the same day, offers a contrast: its operating profit fell 16% to 73.9 billion yen, missing estimates, though it kept its forecast and its outlook for 16.5 million Switch 2 sales. Nintendo is early in the Switch 2's life and investing heavily, while Sony harvests a mature PlayStation platform. Sony's games business should benefit from the launch of "Grand Theft Auto VI" on 19 November, though higher memory prices raise chip costs.

Reactions and Quotes

The market had set a clear bar, and Sony cleared it: the LSEG poll of 12 analysts put the consensus at 505 billion yen, and Sony's 622.3 billion yen result beat that figure by roughly 117 billion yen. The beat came from both entertainment engines at once, not a one-off gain. The guidance raise was the other half of the message: companies usually lift a full-year forecast only when they are confident the strength will last. Nintendo's weaker result on the same day added context, showing the Japanese games sector is not rising uniformly and that Sony's gains reflect its own software and services strength rather than a general industry boom.

Why It Matters

Sony's quarter matters beyond its own shareholders because it shows where the money in entertainment now sits. Hardware sales are slowing, yet profits are rising, because the value has moved to the software, subscriptions and franchises that keep users spending long after they buy a console. That model is now the template for the games industry, and Sony is executing it at scale. The result also matters for film: "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" lifted Sony Pictures' operating income by 568%, a reminder that theatrical releases can still transform a studio's year. In a week of volatile markets, the result is a counterweight.

What Happens Next

The next test comes on 19 November, when "Grand Theft Auto VI" launches. The game is expected to be one of the biggest entertainment releases ever, and its performance on PlayStation will shape Sony's third-quarter results and the holiday season. Strong sales would reinforce the games division's momentum and could push Sony toward another guidance increase early next year. Investors will also watch memory prices and Nintendo's Switch 2 trajectory.
