What Happened

The race in Arizona's 1st District was one of the last House contests to be called after the November 3, 2026 midterm elections, and its result confirmed another Democratic gain in a cycle that delivered the party control of both chambers of Congress. Shah, an emergency medicine physician who served three terms in the Arizona House of Representatives, built a lead of about 22,494 votes over Feely. The district, centred on Scottsdale and the Phoenix area, had been held by Republicans, and Shah's win turns it blue for the next Congress.

Shah announced the result himself on social media, writing: "Arizona, it's the honour of a lifetime to be your next congressman." Indian American Impact, a political organisation that supports Indian-American candidates, invested more than $355,000 in the race.

Background and Context

Shah was born and raised in Chicago to parents who immigrated from Gujarat, India. His father follows Jainism, his mother is Hindu, and Shah attended Catholic schools as a child. He earned his bachelor's and medical degrees from Northwestern University and later completed a Master of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. Before entering politics, he worked as an emergency medicine physician.

Shah was first elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 2018 and won re-election in 2020 and 2022. In the state legislature he built a reputation as a pragmatic Democrat focused on health care and the cost of living, and those themes carried into his congressional campaign. He advocated lowering health insurance premiums and prescription drug prices while protecting Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. His opponent, Jay Feely, came to the race as a former NFL kicker with a high profile in Arizona sports and the endorsement of President Trump, and the contest drew national attention as one of the seats Democrats needed to flip to secure their House majority.

Amish Shah Arizona Win Adds to Democrats' Midterm Gains

Shah's victory fits the wider pattern of the 2026 midterms, in which Democrats retook the House and the Senate as voters delivered a verdict on the cost of living, tariffs and the war with Iran. A USA TODAY analysis of races decided by the morning of Wednesday, November 4 found that President Trump flipped no seats from Democrat to Republican, while dozens of candidates he backed lost. In the House, 40 of the 234 Trump-endorsed candidates had already lost, and Democrats had flipped at least 23 Republican-held seats where Trump endorsed the Republican candidate's opponent. Shah's win in Arizona's 1st District is one of those flips, and it underlines how the president's endorsement, long treated as the gold standard in Republican politics, did not deliver in the 2026 general election. Democrats are already planning a flood of investigations into the Trump administration once they take control of the House in January, and new members such as Shah will be part of the majority that decides how far those inquiries go.

Reactions and Quotes

Shah struck a conciliatory note after the race was called, praising his opponent and promising to represent the whole district. "It's not easy running for public office, and I commend Jay Feely on a hard-fought race," he said. Addressing voters, he outlined his priorities: "Let's end the political toxicity and work on lowering costs, expanding health care coverage, solving our water crisis, and growing our economy." He added: "Now it's time to get to work." Indian American Impact congratulated Shah: "Amish has been a champion for Arizonans since 2019 when he was first elected to the AZ House of Representatives. Now, he'll take the fight to Washington D.C. to fight for working families."

Why It Matters

Shah's election is a milestone for representation. He is the first Indian-American to represent Arizona in Congress, and only the sixth Indian-American ever elected to the US House, joining a small but growing group of South Asian American lawmakers in Washington. His win also lifts the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus to an expected 23 members in the next Congress, its largest ever. The result also has practical consequences: Shah campaigned as a doctor who has treated patients in emergency rooms, and he arrives in Congress with first-hand experience of the health care system he wants to change.

What Happens Next

Shah will take his seat when the new Congress is sworn in in January 2027, joining the Democratic majority in the House. Feely has not formally conceded, and a formal statement is expected in the coming days, though the margin of about 22,494 votes leaves no realistic path to overturn the result. Once in Washington, Shah is expected to press the agenda he campaigned on, including lowering health care costs and addressing Arizona's water crisis. The midterm results are still being finalised in some states.
