The gunman who killed a Citibank employee at the bank's Tampa campus has been identified as Jacob Pearson, 35, of Orlando, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said on Thursday, November 5, 2026. Pearson shot learning adviser LeAnne Selmon, 41, of Palm Harbor, after receiving a court summons over a delinquent debt of $2,500 he owed the bank.

The Citibank Tampa shooting ended when bank security officer John Fraley, a Marine veteran and a Citi vice president of operations, confronted Pearson inside the building and shot him five times. Pearson was pronounced dead at Tampa General Hospital at 1:12 p.m. Wednesday, November 4. Chronister credited Fraley with saving lives, saying the guard could have fled but chose to confront the gunman instead.

Key Points

• Sheriff Chad Chronister named the gunman as Jacob Pearson, 35, of Orlando, and the woman killed as LeAnne Selmon, 41, of Palm Harbor, a Citibank learning adviser.
• Pearson became violent after receiving a court summons over a delinquent $2,500 debt he owed Citibank, Chronister said.
• Pearson shot Selmon three times with a rifle, which then malfunctioned. He went back to his car for a handgun and approached her as she tried to crawl away.
• Citibank security officer John Fraley, a Marine veteran, shot Pearson five times from a tactical position inside a men's restroom. Pearson died at Tampa General Hospital at 1:12 p.m. Wednesday.
• The first marked sheriff's vehicle arrived within a minute of the 911 calls, and 367 deputies responded in all. Four other people were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

What Happened

Chronister laid out the sequence at a sheriff's briefing on Thursday, a day after the attack at the Citibank Center campus in Brandon, near Tampa. Pearson arrived carrying a rifle and confronted Selmon, a learning adviser who worked for the bank. He shot her three times. When the rifle malfunctioned, he went back to his car, retrieved a handgun, and walked back toward her as she tried to crawl away.

That was when Fraley intervened. The Citibank security officer, a Marine veteran who also serves as a Citi vice president of operations, took a tactical position inside a men's restroom and opened fire, hitting Pearson five times. Deputies found Pearson wounded, and he was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:12 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4. The first marked sheriff's vehicle had arrived within one minute of the 911 calls, and 367 deputies responded in all.

Background: A Campus on Alert Before the Attack

The Citibank Center campus in Brandon is a large office complex east of Tampa, home to thousands of Citi employees. It is the kind of sprawling suburban workplace where a single armed intruder can move between buildings before anyone realises what is happening.

Chronister also revealed that the bank had been worried about Pearson before the shooting. Citi's head of security, a retired Secret Service agent, had recognised the threat Pearson posed and contacted Orlando police to request a welfare check, and had also asked the sheriff's office for deputies on campus. That warning, and what happened after it, is likely to become a central question as investigators piece together the days leading up to the attack.

The Citibank Tampa Shooting: What the Sheriff's Briefing Revealed

The most important new fact from Chronister's briefing is the motive. Pearson, the sheriff said, became violent after receiving a court summons over a delinquent $2,500 debt he owed Citibank. A debt of that size would not normally be expected to lead to murder, and investigators have not said what else may have been going on in Pearson's life. But the summons appears to have been the trigger that sent him to the campus with a rifle.

The briefing also filled in the details of the attack: three rifle shots, a weapon malfunction, a return to the car for a handgun, and a victim trying to crawl away. It is a grim sequence, and it shows how close the attack came to claiming more lives. One detail remains unsettled: some reports spell the victim's surname Selman rather than Selmon.

Reactions and Quotes

Chronister was unsparing in his praise for Fraley. He credited the security officer with stopping Pearson from harming anyone else, saying Fraley could have fled but chose to confront the gunman instead. For a bank security officer to take a tactical position and engage an armed attacker is an extraordinary act, and the sheriff made clear that it saved lives.

Citi has been coordinating with law enforcement since the shooting, and the bank's own head of security had already been in contact with police before the attack. The company has not yet issued a detailed public statement about the victims or its security arrangements, and employees at the Brandon campus have been offered support as they return to work.

Why It Matters

The Citibank Tampa shooting matters because it shows how quickly a financial dispute can turn into workplace violence. Pearson's grievance was a $2,500 debt and a court summons — the kind of paperwork dispute that thousands of Americans face every week. That it ended in murder, inside a major bank's office campus, is a reminder that employers cannot assume a disgruntled customer or debtor will stay peaceful.

It also matters because of what happened before the shooting. Citi's head of security recognised the threat, asked Orlando police for a welfare check, and requested deputies on campus. If the warning signs were clear enough for a retired Secret Service agent to act on them, the question now is whether more could have been done.

What Happens Next

Investigators will now reconstruct Pearson's movements in the days before the attack, including what happened after the welfare check was requested and whether he made any further threats. The sheriff's office is expected to release more detail about the timeline, and about the four people treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Citi faces its own questions: how it handles debt collection disputes with customers who show signs of instability, and whether security at the Brandon campus will change. The bank has said it is cooperating with law enforcement, and support services are in place for employees. For Selmon's family, the days ahead will be about grief rather than policy.
