An infant in Wisconsin has died of measles, state health officials announced on Thursday, in the first measles-related death in the state in more than 35 years and the third such death reported in the United States this week. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services confirmed the death on November 5, 2026, as the state battles its largest measles outbreak in more than three decades. The coroner listed measles as the immediate cause of death. Officials released no further details about the child, saying the family's privacy must be protected.

More than 4,800 cases have been reported across the US in 2026, the highest annual total since 1991, almost a decade before the disease was declared eliminated. Wisconsin alone has recorded 431 cases in 13 counties, with nine people hospitalised.

Key Points

• An infant in Wisconsin has died of measles; the coroner listed measles as the immediate cause of death.
• It is Wisconsin's first measles-related death in more than 35 years and the third reported in the US this week.
• Wisconsin's outbreak has reached 431 cases in 13 counties this year, with nine people hospitalised.
• More than 4,800 measles cases have been reported across the US in 2026, the most since 1991.
• Two doses of the MMR vaccine are 97% effective at preventing measles, health officials say.

What Happened

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services announced the infant's death on Thursday, November 5, 2026. The department said the child died in connection with the large, ongoing measles outbreak spreading through the state. No further information about the child was released. Officials said those details were withheld to protect the family's privacy.

The death is the third measles death reported in the United States this week. On Wednesday, November 4, an unvaccinated resident of Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, died of measles, the sixth measles death in Pennsylvania this year. On Monday, November 2, a child in Lewis County, New York, died of measles, the first measles death in New York in 30 years. Three deaths in five days, in three different states, show how widely the virus is now circulating.

Wisconsin health secretary Kirsten Johnson said the loss showed the human cost of a vaccine-preventable disease. "Any death of a child is a tragedy and even more so when it is related to a vaccine-preventable disease," Johnson said.

Background: Wisconsin's Largest Outbreak in Decades

Wisconsin is experiencing its largest measles outbreak in more than three decades. The state has confirmed 431 cases in 13 counties so far this year, and nine people have been hospitalised. State health officials have warned that the true case count may be higher, because measles can spread for days before a rash appears and some mild cases are never diagnosed.

The outbreak has pushed Wisconsin to urge early vaccination. The state has been advising parents to seek the MMR vaccine for infants as young as six months old when they may be exposed, earlier than the usual first dose at 12 to 15 months, to protect babies too young for routine vaccination. Infants are among the most vulnerable to severe measles, which can cause pneumonia, brain swelling and death.

Measles spreads through the air and can linger for up to two hours. It is one of the most contagious diseases known: where vaccination rates fall, a single case can seed dozens more, so officials track outbreaks county by county and move quickly to offer vaccination clinics.

Wisconsin Measles Death Highlights a National Surge

The Wisconsin measles death is part of a national picture that has alarmed health officials all year. More than 4,800 measles cases have been reported across the United States in 2026, the most since 1991, more than double the total recorded in all of 2025. The surge comes almost three decades after measles was declared eliminated in the US in 2000.

Other states face the same surge. Pennsylvania has reported 1,467 cases and six deaths, and Kentucky's outbreak has reached 204 cases, its largest since 1991. In each state the pattern is the same: clusters in communities with lower vaccination coverage, spreading wider, with children and unvaccinated adults hit hardest.

An international meeting next week will determine the status of measles elimination in the United States. Losing it would mark the return of a disease the country once defeated.

Reactions and Quotes

State health secretary Kirsten Johnson spoke directly about the death, calling it a tragedy made worse by the fact that measles can be prevented by vaccination. "Any death of a child is a tragedy and even more so when it is related to a vaccine-preventable disease," she said.

Wisconsin health officials have not released further details about the infant or the family. The department continues to urge vaccination, working with local health departments in the 13 affected counties to trace contacts and offer post-exposure vaccination.

Why It Matters

Measles was once a routine childhood illness that killed hundreds of American children every year before vaccination. The MMR vaccine changed that: two doses are 97% effective at preventing measles, and widespread vaccination kept the disease out of the country for a generation. The return of measles deaths, especially among infants, shows what happens when vaccination coverage slips.

Infants are particularly at risk because they are too young to have completed vaccination and depend on the immunity of those around them. When an infant dies of measles, it is a sign the virus is reaching the most vulnerable people in a community.

What Happens Next

Wisconsin's outbreak response will continue, with contact tracing, vaccination clinics and public warnings in the affected counties. Health officials are urging parents to check their children's vaccination records and to seek the MMR vaccine for infants from six months old if they may have been exposed.

Nationally, attention now turns to next week's international meeting, which will decide whether the United States keeps its measles elimination status. The outcome will shape the national response and the pressure on states to close vaccination gaps.
