Iran staged a mock execution of President Donald Trump in Tehran on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, turning the 47th anniversary of the seizure of the US Embassy into a public spectacle aimed at Washington. It came a day after Republicans lost control of Congress in the midterm elections, a defeat the president has linked to the eight-month war on Iran.

At Tajrish Square in northern Tehran, an actor wearing a Trump mask and a prison uniform was shown behind bars and then led to a gallows in a simulated hanging, according to footage highlighted by the Middle East Media Research Institute.

What Happened

At Tajrish Square, organisers built a stage around a mock prison cell and a gallows. The actor was paraded before the crowd, placed behind bars, then led to the gallows in a simulated hanging. Footage circulated widely, amplified by the Middle East Media Research Institute.

The performance was not a one-off. It followed an October 21 mock prison-cell installation at the same square, and a central Tehran billboard reading "We will kill Trump" had appeared days earlier. Elsewhere in the capital, thousands of demonstrators gathered at Enghelab Square to mark the anniversary, burning the banner and the flags while chanting "Death to America" and "Death to Israel".

Background and Context

The embassy seizure of November 4, 1979, when Iranian students stormed the US Embassy in Tehran and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days, remains the founding rupture of modern US-Iran relations. This year the date fell eight months into the war that began on February 28, 2026, and a day after American voters handed both chambers of Congress to the Democrats.

The war dominated the American election campaign. Vice President JD Vance said after the vote that "the reason we lost is the war", an assessment President Trump later described as largely true. Qalibaf seized on Vance's words a day later, mocking the vice president on X as a "losing gambler" who "can't walk away from the table". Behind the theatre, diplomacy continues: talks are under way in Geneva, and a trilateral meeting is due in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11. A second American carrier strike group, led by the USS Gerald R. Ford, is heading to the Middle East, and Trump has said he will decide within about ten days whether to resume strikes.

Iran Mock Execution of Trump: What the Display Signals

The mock execution is best read as a message in three directions at once. For the Iranian public, it is a show of defiance, staged as the country endures eight months of war, a naval blockade and a collapsing currency. For Washington, it is a warning that Tehran believes the political winds have shifted in its favour after the midterms. For the region, it is a reminder that Tehran still sees public confrontation with the United States as a source of legitimacy.

There is also a darker reading. Reuters has reported that Iranian leaders worry Trump could launch more strikes before the new Congress takes office in January, while he still commands a Republican majority. The threats and the mock execution may be intended to raise the political price of such a decision.

Reactions and Quotes

The most direct reaction came from Qalibaf, who linked the election result to the war in a post on X. "Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message," he wrote. President Trump has acknowledged the war contributed to the Republican losses, pointing to the conflict, fuel prices and inflation, even as he has defended the decision to go to war.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei dismissed suggestions the results would change Washington's approach. No White House response to the mock execution itself had been reported by Friday morning.

Why It Matters

The display matters first because of its timing: it came a day after an election that reshaped the balance of power in Washington. It matters second because it shows the war now being fought in the open, in symbols as well as in strikes, with the mock execution, the billboard and the banner burning forming a coordinated campaign alongside the Geneva talks and the naval build-up in the Gulf. It matters third because the window for decisions is narrowing: with the new Congress taking office in January and Trump's ten-day window on renewed strikes now open, the coming weeks will test whether diplomacy can produce a deal before the military track takes over.

What Happens Next

The immediate focus is the negotiation track. Talks in Geneva are continuing, and the Abu Dhabi meeting on November 10-11 will bring American, Russian and Ukrainian officials together for the first time since February. Iran says a deal is still far off and its conditions, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting sanctions, must be met first. In parallel, the USS Gerald R. Ford is steaming toward the Middle East, and tanker attacks in the Gulf continue at a near-record pace.
