Microsoft is winding down its arrangement to rent artificial intelligence computing capacity from Oracle, Bloomberg News reported on Friday, in a move that signals a wider reassessment of the billions of dollars the software giant has committed to cloud partnerships. The Microsoft Oracle AI cloud deal, struck in 2023 to secure extra computing power for a new AI-assisted version of Bing, is being scaled back as Microsoft switches off rented capacity it no longer needs — as investors take a harder look at the cost of the AI infrastructure boom.

Key Points

• Bloomberg reported on Friday, November 6, 2026, that Microsoft is winding down its deal to rent AI computing capacity from Oracle, citing people familiar with the matter.
• Microsoft has been switching off rented Oracle capacity in recent months after deciding not to renew the contract.
• The rented capacity became less useful because Oracle’s hardware relies on older-generation Nvidia chips, limiting its fit for Microsoft’s evolving AI workloads.
• The deal dates to 2023, when Microsoft turned to Oracle for computing power for an AI-assisted Bing while its own data centres were still coming online.
• Oracle shares fell about 3 to 4 percent in Friday afternoon trading after the report, while Microsoft shares were little changed.

What Happened

Microsoft is winding down an arrangement to rent AI computing from Oracle as part of a larger reassessment of billions of dollars in cloud partnerships, Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. The report, carried by Reuters, said Microsoft has been turning off computing capacity rented from Oracle in recent months after declining to renew the contract.

Neither Microsoft nor Oracle immediately responded to Reuters’ requests for comment. With no public statement from either company, the market read the report on its own terms: Oracle’s shares fell about 3 to 4 percent in Friday afternoon trading, while Microsoft’s were little changed.

Background: The 2023 Deal and the AI Capacity Crunch

The arrangement was announced in 2023, at the height of the scramble for computing power that followed the launch of AI-assisted search. Microsoft had just rebuilt Bing around artificial intelligence, and demand for the graphics processing units that train and run large AI models was far outstripping supply. With its own data centres still coming online, Microsoft tapped Oracle to secure extra capacity quickly.

Three years on, the picture has changed. Microsoft has spent heavily on its own infrastructure, and its Azure cloud business has grown sharply — Azure revenue jumped 48 percent in the company’s latest reported quarter. The capacity Microsoft once had to borrow is now increasingly available inside its own walls.

Microsoft Oracle AI Cloud Deal: Why the Capacity No Longer Fits

The central reason for the wind-down is technical. The Oracle hardware Microsoft rented relies on older-generation Nvidia chips, and that has limited its suitability for Microsoft’s evolving AI workloads. As AI models have grown larger and more demanding, the newest chips have become the standard, and capacity built on earlier generations is worth less to a company running frontier models.

That mismatch is part of a broader shift in how the biggest technology companies buy computing power. In 2023, the priority was securing any capacity at all. In 2026, the priority is securing the right capacity — the newest hardware, in the right locations, at a cost that can be justified to investors who are now scrutinising every dollar of AI spending. Bloomberg reported that the wind-down is part of a larger review of billions of dollars in cloud partnerships, suggesting Microsoft is examining its outside commitments across the board.

Reactions: Markets and the Companies’ Silence

The market reaction was swift and one-sided. Oracle shares fell about 3 to 4 percent in Friday afternoon trading after the report, while Microsoft shares were little changed. Investors read the news as a modest negative for Oracle’s cloud growth story, which has leaned heavily on AI demand, and as broadly neutral for Microsoft, which is simply replacing rented capacity with its own.

The timing added to the pressure on Oracle. The report landed as the Nasdaq sat in correction territory and investors were already reassessing heavy AI infrastructure spending, after a week of sharp swings in technology stocks. Oracle had only days earlier raised $20 billion to fund its own AI and cloud build-out, and its cloud ambitions are also tied to its OpenAI partnership, announced at Oracle AI World in Las Vegas.

Why It Matters

The wind-down matters because it marks a turn in the AI infrastructure boom. For three years, the story was one of insatiable demand: any company with chips to rent could find a buyer, and any buyer would take whatever capacity was available. Microsoft stepping back shows the market is maturing. Demand is still enormous, but it is becoming selective, and the quality of the hardware now matters as much as the quantity.

For Oracle, the loss of a marquee customer is a setback, though not a fatal one. Its cloud business has grown rapidly on AI demand. For the wider industry, the episode signals a more disciplined phase: hyperscalers are still spending at historic levels, but they are now asking harder questions about what each dollar buys.

What Happens Next

Investors will watch Microsoft’s next earnings report for any comment on its cloud partnerships and capital spending. Oracle’s next results will be examined just as closely, for any change in the growth of its cloud business and for management’s response to the loss of Microsoft’s rented capacity.

For now, the deal’s unwinding is a reminder of how fast the AI landscape moves. A partnership struck in urgency in 2023, when any computing power was precious, has become expendable in 2026 — not because demand for AI has faded, but because the hardware, and the market, have moved on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Microsoft-Oracle AI cloud deal?
It is a 2023 arrangement under which Microsoft rented AI computing capacity from Oracle, struck to secure extra power for a new AI-assisted version of Bing while Microsoft’s own data centres were still coming online.

Why is Microsoft winding it down?
Microsoft declined to renew the contract and has been switching off the rented capacity. The Oracle hardware relies on older-generation Nvidia chips, which no longer suit Microsoft’s evolving AI workloads, and Microsoft now has its own data centres to rely on.

How did Oracle shares react?
Oracle shares fell about 3 to 4 percent in Friday afternoon trading after the Bloomberg report. Microsoft shares were little changed.

Does this affect Microsoft’s AI products?
There is no sign of any disruption. Microsoft’s own infrastructure has grown substantially since 2023, and its AI products, including Bing and its Copilot services, run on Microsoft’s own cloud.

What does it mean for the AI spending boom?
It signals a more disciplined phase. Companies still spend heavily on AI infrastructure, but now weigh capacity quality and cost more carefully, and investors scrutinise the returns.
