President Donald Trump headed to Florida on Friday, November 6, 2026, for his first trip outside Washington since Republicans were crushed in the November 3 midterms. The Trump Florida trip took him to a conference at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, paired with a public show of loyalty to Republican National Committee chairman Joe Gruters, whom Trump urged party members to re-elect.

Trump had kept a low profile since the defeat, his only post-election events focused on White House renovation work. Friday's journey was watched closely, not for what he said at a technology gathering, but for what his first steps outside the capital revealed about a party arguing openly over who is to blame.

Key Points

• Trump travelled to Florida on Friday, November 6, for his first trip outside Washington since the November 3 midterms, for the UP.Summit conference at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.
• The same day, Trump urged Republicans to re-elect Joe Gruters as RNC chairman, praising him on Truth Social for turning the committee into "an efficient, focused, and powerful machine".
• Vice President JD Vance blamed the Iran war, writing that "the reason we lost is the war"; Senator Ted Cruz blamed Trump's tariffs and called the result a "Watergate-level repudiation".
• Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called the outcome close to an "extinction-level event" for Republicans, while boasting Florida was the only Republican stronghold to survive the Democratic wave.
• The Democratic wins revived debate over the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact; five newly Democratic-controlled states could push support past the 270-vote threshold.

What Happened

Trump's destination was the UP.Summit, a technology conference at Kennedy Space Center, the launch complex on Florida's Space Coast. The setting was deliberate: it gave the president a forward-looking stage far from the recriminations in Washington, in the one state where Republicans could still claim victory. Florida, in Governor Ron DeSantis's telling, was the only Republican stronghold to survive what he called a blue tsunami.

Hours before travelling, Trump used Truth Social to urge Republicans to re-elect Joe Gruters as chairman of the Republican National Committee, despite a midterm result widely described as the party's worst since Watergate. "Joe Gruters should return as Chairman of the RNC," Trump wrote, crediting Gruters with turning the committee into "an efficient, focused, and powerful machine".

Gruters was first elected RNC chairman in 2025 after Trump's endorsement, and the president's backing now signals he intends to keep his grip on the party machinery after a bruising defeat. It also revived memories of the party's Dallas midterm convention, dubbed "Trump-a-palooza", which strategists criticised for forcing candidates to appear beside an unpopular president.

Background: The Midterm Rout

Democrats won both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterms, a result described across the political spectrum as a rout. The scale of the loss has drawn comparisons with Watergate, the last time Republicans suffered a repudiation of this size, and left the party arguing in public about whether the causes were the war in Iran, the cost of living, tariffs, or the president himself.

The result is not yet final. The Democratic majorities could still expand as votes continued to be counted in the Alaska and Mississippi Senate races and in dozens of House races, with counting expected to take days or weeks. The size of the majorities will shape how much of the Democratic agenda can pass when the new Congress takes its seats.

Trump's Florida Trip: Back on the Road

The Trump Florida trip matters less for the conference than for what it signals about the president's next moves. A president who had gone quiet after a defeat chose to reappear in the state that held, at a gathering devoted to technology and the future, rather than at a rally devoted to the past.

Florida is Trump's adopted home state and the base of his political operation, and the Kennedy Space Center is a symbol of American ambition that fits his story about national renewal.

Reactions and Quotes

Vice President JD Vance blamed the war in Iran in a postmortem published on X on November 4. He wrote that MAGA voters had turned out in solid numbers, but that "many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026", and concluded: "The reason we lost is the war." Full Vance report.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz called the rout a "Watergate-level repudiation" and blamed Trump's tariffs for "making everything too expensive". Cruz said the Iran war had "dragged on too long" and pointed to a "very real economic disconnect". Full Cruz report.

DeSantis called the results "as close to an extinction-level event for Republicans in many parts of the country as we have seen probably in the last 100 years", while insisting Florida alone held the line. Full DeSantis report.

Not everyone blames the president. Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump was not to blame, noting that "his name wasn't on the ballot". Trump himself has said the Iran war was "a piece of" the Republican losses, while saying he does not regret launching it. Trump's own assessment.

Why It Matters

The Florida trip and the Gruters endorsement are linked. By backing Gruters for another term, Trump is moving to keep control of the party's organisation, fundraising and candidate recruitment at a moment when rivals might challenge his authority. The chairmanship controls the machinery that will run the party's next campaigns.

The National Popular Vote debate adds a longer-term dimension. The Democratic wins have rekindled discussion of the compact, under which participating states would award their electoral votes to the national popular vote winner. Five newly Democratic-controlled states, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, could push support past the 270-vote threshold needed for it to take effect.

What Happens Next

The RNC chairmanship will be decided by the party's members. Trump's endorsement of Gruters carries heavy weight, but rivals who believe the party needs new leadership may still challenge him, and the contest will test whether Trump's authority has survived the defeat.

Vote counting will continue in Alaska and Mississippi and in dozens of House races, with final results expected to take days or weeks. In the five states named in the National Popular Vote debate, Democratic legislators are expected to face pressure to join the compact now that they control the levers of government.
