Chris Murphy discharged from hospital on Friday: Senator Chris Murphy left The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore on November 6, 2026, six days after suffering a small stroke, his office said. The Connecticut Democrat, 53, will now spend several weeks at a rehabilitation centre as he recovers, and he will miss the next several weeks of Senate votes.

Doctors say Murphy has made strong progress since the stroke, caused by a small bleed in the thalamus region of his brain, and they expect him to make a full recovery after rehabilitation.

Key Points

• Chris Murphy, 53, was discharged from Johns Hopkins Hospital on Friday, November 6, after a small haemorrhagic stroke.
• He will spend several weeks in rehabilitation and miss the next several weeks of Senate votes. No return date has been announced.
• Doctors found a small bleed in the thalamus after Murphy called 911 on October 31 with a numb left arm.
• His doctor said Murphy "has shown tremendous progress" and is expected to make a full recovery.
• The stroke came three days before the November 3 midterms, when Democrats flipped the Senate and House.

What Happened

The scare began on Saturday, October 31, when Murphy was watching his son play hockey and felt that something was wrong. He had numbness in his left arm, and he called 911. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors found a stroke, then transferred to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.

At Johns Hopkins, doctors diagnosed a small bleed in the thalamus, a part of the brain deep near its centre that relays sensory and movement signals. The bleed caused a small haemorrhagic stroke — a stroke caused by bleeding in the brain rather than a blocked vessel. His condition improved steadily through the week.

On Friday, November 6, the hospital discharged him. Instead of going home, Murphy will move to a rehabilitation centre for several weeks. His office said he will miss the next several weeks of Senate votes, and no date has been set for his return. The Senate resumes on Monday.

Background: Who Is Chris Murphy?

Murphy has represented Connecticut in the Senate since 2013, after first winning the seat in 2012. He was re-elected in 2018 and 2024, and he is one of the Senate's best-known voices on gun safety, an issue he took up after the 2012 Newtown school shooting. He also serves on the Foreign Relations and Appropriations committees.

His stroke came at a moment of high political drama. Three days after he was taken to hospital, voters went to the polls in the November 3 midterms, and Democrats flipped the Senate and the House. Murphy will watch his party's return to power from a rehabilitation centre rather than take part in it from the Senate floor. Read our earlier report on Senator Murphy's stroke and hospitalisation. Connecticut faces no vacancy, but an absence of several weeks is serious for a state with only two senators.

Chris Murphy Discharged After Stroke: What Doctors Said

Dr. Jose Suarez, chief of neurosciences critical care at Johns Hopkins, gave the most detailed medical update yet at Murphy's discharge. He said Murphy "has shown tremendous progress, and at the current rate of improvement, we expect that he will make a full recovery following rehabilitation."

A small bleed in the thalamus can affect movement and feeling on one side of the body, and rehabilitation is the standard next step: therapy to rebuild strength, coordination and confidence.

Murphy said doctors are "very encouraged by the progress I've made so far" and that rehabilitation will get him back to work "on the quickest timeline possible." His office has not named the centre or the length of the stay, which doctors set by how the patient responds.

Reactions and Quotes

The two voices that matter most are the doctor who treated Murphy and the senator himself, and both spoke with guarded optimism on Friday.

"He has shown tremendous progress, and at the current rate of improvement, we expect that he will make a full recovery following rehabilitation," said Dr. Jose Suarez, chief of neurosciences critical care at Johns Hopkins.

Murphy said doctors are "very encouraged by the progress I've made so far" and that rehabilitation will get him back to work "on the quickest timeline possible."

Neither promised a return date, and neither played down the seriousness of a stroke. But the message was clear: Murphy is well enough to leave hospital, and his doctors believe he will recover fully.

Why It Matters

First, the Senate. Democrats have just won back the majority, and the first weeks of a new session are when the chamber elects its leaders, seats its committees and sets its rules. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer has said he expects to be re-elected as majority leader, and the organising work will go ahead without one of the party's most prominent members.

Second, Connecticut. The state has two senators, and for several weeks it will effectively have one fully active voice in the chamber. Murphy's staff will keep working for constituents, and his office remains open, but there is no substitute for a senator's own vote and voice on the floor.

Third, the medical lesson. Murphy felt numbness in his arm, recognised that something was not right and called 911. Doctors say fast action matters enormously with strokes, because treatment works best when it starts quickly. His case shows that even a fit, active 53-year-old can suffer a stroke — and that recognising the warning signs can change the outcome.

What Happens Next

Murphy will now begin several weeks of rehabilitation, focused on rebuilding the strength and coordination affected by the bleed in his thalamus. His doctors will judge his progress week by week, and only when they are satisfied will a return date be set.

The Senate resumes on Monday, and the first votes of the new session will take place without him. Democrats flipped seats across the country on November 3, and the party will be organising its new majority while one of its best-known senators recovers. For now, the priority in Washington is Murphy's health — and the expectation, shared by his doctors, is that he will be back.
