Two missiles struck Iran's Qeshm Island early on Saturday, Iranian state media said, in a new attack on the strategic island at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz, as Tehran claimed its air defences had shot down an American drone overhead. The reports, which have not been independently confirmed, mark the second strike on Qeshm in five days and come as Washington weighs whether to widen a war now in its ninth month.

Key Points

• Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency said early Saturday, November 7, 2026, that initial reports indicated two missiles had struck Qeshm Island, with no official information yet on possible damage.
• IRNA reported that local witnesses said two projectiles hit the Suza area after the sound of an aircraft was heard overhead.
• Iran's army said its air defence force intercepted and destroyed a US MQ-9 drone over Qeshm Island, according to state broadcaster IRIB.
• The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps separately said it destroyed a US MQ-1 drone over the island on Friday, November 6.
• US Central Command called the situation around Qeshm Island "relatively calm" and said it would issue an announcement about Iran at 8:30 a.m. EST on Saturday.

What Happened

Tasnim, Iran's semi-official news agency, reported in the early hours of Saturday that two missiles had struck Qeshm Island, the large island guarding the entrance to the Persian Gulf. The agency said there was no official information on possible damage and that further details would be released once the relevant authorities confirmed the incident.

Earlier, the state news agency IRNA reported that local witnesses said two projectiles had struck the Suza area of Qeshm Island in southern Iran after the sound of an aircraft was heard over the island.

Iran's army said its air defence force had intercepted and destroyed a US MQ-9 drone over Qeshm Island, according to state broadcaster IRIB. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps separately said it had destroyed a US MQ-1 drone over the island on Friday. Neither claim has been independently confirmed, and Washington has not publicly confirmed the loss of any aircraft. US Central Command said the situation around Qeshm Island was "relatively calm" and that it would issue an announcement about Iran at 8:30 a.m. EST on Saturday.

Qatar's International Media Office also moved on Saturday to deny circulating reports that the United States and Iran had failed to reach an agreement to end their war, calling them false and misleading. It said the Qatari prime minister affirmed both sides continue to work toward an agreement.

Background: A Second Strike on Qeshm in Five Days

The reported strike is the second on Qeshm Island in less than a week. On Tuesday, November 3, the United States struck the island in secret raids near the strait, as reported in US Strikes Iran's Qeshm Island in Secret Raids Near Hormuz, WSJ Reports. President Donald Trump later confirmed that strike and called it a minor attack.

The war between the United States and Israel on one side and Iran on the other began on February 28, 2026, and is now in its ninth month. Tehran has kept the Strait of Hormuz closed since the war began, and the waterway, carrying about one-fifth of the world's oil, has become the central pressure point of the conflict. The strike comes days after President Trump said on Thursday, November 5, that a decision on widening the war is coming soon. as reported in Trump Warns He May Have to 'Destroy the Rest' of Iran as War Decision Nears.

Vice President JD Vance said on Monday that Washington had made "progress" in talks with Iran and that no deadline had been set for a deal. On Friday, Iran claimed two more oil tankers caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz after striking naval mines, as reported in Two More Tankers Catch Fire in Strait of Hormuz After Mine Strikes, Iran Says.

Qeshm Island Strike: What Is Confirmed and What Is Not

Almost everything about the Saturday strike rests on Iranian state and semi-official media, and the picture is incomplete. Tasnim reported the two missiles but said there was no official word on damage. IRNA added the witness accounts from Suza and the sound of an aircraft. Neither agency published photographs or casualty figures, and no independent outlet had verified the strike by Saturday morning.

The drone claims are in the same position. Iran has made repeated claims of shooting down American drones during the war, including an MQ-1 claim in late October that was also unconfirmed. The MQ-9 is the larger, more heavily armed American surveillance and strike drone, and its loss, if confirmed, would be a significant Iranian claim. But the Pentagon has not confirmed any loss.

Reactions and Statements

Tasnim said further details of the strike would be released once the relevant authorities confirmed the incident, a formula that leaves open whether Tehran will treat the attack as a major escalation or play it down. Iran's army, through IRIB, presented the MQ-9 interception as a defensive success, while the Revolutionary Guard's separate MQ-1 claim on Friday framed Iran's air defences as active over the island.

US Central Command's description of the situation as "relatively calm" contrasted with the Iranian reports, and its promised 8:30 a.m. EST announcement left open whether Washington would acknowledge the strike, deny it, or say nothing about Qeshm at all.

Why It Matters

A second strike on Qeshm in five days raises the stakes on two fronts at once. Militarily, it shows the island is now a regular target, and it comes as the White House weighs a decision on widening the war. Diplomatically, it lands in the middle of Qatari mediation that both sides say is still alive.

The Strait of Hormuz is the single most important oil chokepoint in the world. Roughly one-fifth of global oil consumption passes through it, along with a large share of the world's liquefied natural gas. A sustained closure, or confirmed attacks on tankers and the island guarding the strait, would push oil prices higher and raise shipping insurance costs.

What Happens Next

The first thing to watch is CENTCOM's 8:30 a.m. EST announcement, which may confirm or deny the strike and clarify whether Washington intends to say anything about Qeshm at all. The second is whether Iranian authorities release damage assessments or photographs. The third is the diplomatic track: Qatari mediators have been carrying proposals between Washington and Tehran, and the talks have not collapsed. Whether the strike changes that calculation will become clear in the coming days, along with President Trump's decision on widening the war.
