A British doctor who contracted Ebola while working on the epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been flown home to the United Kingdom for specialist treatment, arriving in London on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

The doctor, whose name, age and condition have not been released, is now being cared for in the high-level isolation unit at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, north London, one of the few British facilities equipped to treat the world's most dangerous infectious diseases. It is the first confirmed case of a British national catching Ebola during the current Congo outbreak, and the third time a person who tested positive has been brought back to Europe for treatment. Health officials moved quickly to reassure the public, saying the risk to people in the UK "remains low".

Key Points

• A British doctor who tested positive for Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was evacuated to the UK on a specialist medical flight, arriving on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
• The doctor landed at RAF Northolt and was taken to the high-level isolation unit at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, north London.
• It is the first confirmed case of a UK national contracting Ebola during the current outbreak, and the third positive case returned to Europe.
• The Bundibugyo virus outbreak has reached 10,668 confirmed cases and 5,198 deaths across eight provinces as of November 4, 2026, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
• UK health officials say the risk to the wider public "remains low", with strict infection control in place for everyone involved in the patient's care.

What Happened

The UK Department of Health and Social Care confirmed on Thursday that the doctor had tested positive for Ebola while working on the epidemic in the Congo and had been evacuated to Britain on a specialist medical evacuation flight. The patient landed at RAF Northolt, the Royal Air Force station in west London used for sensitive medical flights, and was transferred under strict isolation precautions to the Royal Free Hospital.

The evacuation was arranged jointly by the UK and Congolese governments and international health partners, with infection prevention and control procedures applied to everyone involved in the patient's care. Officials have not said which organisation the doctor was working for, nor where the infection was acquired.

Background: The Congo Ebola Outbreak

The current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was declared on May 15, 2026, and has grown into the second-largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded. Figures from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control put the toll at 10,668 confirmed cases and 5,198 deaths across eight provinces as of November 4, 2026, a fatality rate of nearly 49 percent. Only the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic, with more than 28,600 cases and over 11,000 deaths, has been larger.

The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, a rarer form of the disease for which there is no approved vaccine or proven treatment. A vaccine trial known as Tumaini began in the Congolese city of Bunia on October 23, testing whether the existing Ervebo vaccine offers cross-protection against Bundibugyo. Around four in five new cases have appeared outside monitored contact chains. The spread prompted the US CDC to order, from November 3, 2026, that every passenger flying to the United States present a signed attestation that they have not been in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the previous 21 days. British Doctor Ebola Evacuation: How the Transfer Was Organised

Moving a patient with Ebola across continents is one of the most demanding operations in public health. The patient travels in a sealed isolation pod inside a specially equipped aircraft, cared for by a medical team in full protective equipment, and is transferred directly from the aircraft to the isolation unit without passing through public areas of the airport or the hospital.

Each transfer is planned jointly by the governments involved and by international health partners, with the receiving hospital's isolation team briefed before the aircraft lands. At the Royal Free, the patient will be cared for in a negative-pressure room by staff in full protective suits, with every sample handled in a high-containment laboratory. Contacts, including the flight crew and the medical team, will be monitored for symptoms for 21 days, the maximum incubation period for Ebola.

Reactions and Quotes

Dr Renu Bindra, deputy director of the All Hazards Public Health Response team at the UK Health Security Agency, said the risk to the wider public "remains low", a message repeated by health officials as news of the evacuation spread. The UK Health Security Agency is responsible for tracking the contacts of the patient and deciding whether anyone else needs monitoring or testing.

Why It Matters

The evacuation matters for three reasons. First, it is a reminder that the Congo outbreak, now in its sixth month, is still growing, with more than 10,000 confirmed cases and a death toll approaching 5,200. Second, it shows the epidemic is now touching health workers from countries far beyond central Africa, raising pressure on governments and agencies to protect their staff. Third, it tests the readiness of health systems in Europe, where isolation units, contact tracing and public communication must all work at once. Read our earlier report as the Congo Ebola outbreak passed 10,000 cases.

What Happens Next

The doctor will remain in the Royal Free's high-level isolation unit while treatment continues. Ebola care is supportive: fluids, treatment for other infections, and close monitoring of organ function, since there is no approved drug that kills the virus itself. The patient's condition has not been disclosed. In the coming days, UK health officials will complete contact tracing for everyone who had close contact with the patient, while in the Congo the Tumaini vaccine trial continues in Bunia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a risk to the public in the UK?
Health officials say the risk to the wider public "remains low". Ebola spreads only through direct contact with the body fluids of a person showing symptoms.

What is the Bundibugyo virus?
Bundibugyo is one of the strains of the Ebola virus. It is rarer than the Zaire strain behind the West Africa epidemic, and there is no approved vaccine or proven treatment specifically for it.

How did the doctor catch Ebola?
Officials have not said where or how the infection happened. The doctor was working on the epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where health workers face a high risk of infection while caring for patients.

What is the Royal Free Hospital's isolation unit?
It is a high-level isolation unit in Hampstead, north London, one of only a few in the UK built to treat patients with highly infectious diseases. It previously treated British nurse Pauline Cafferkey in 2014.

Should travellers to Africa be worried?
Travellers should follow official advice for the countries they visit. The US CDC now requires an attestation from passengers flying to America that they have not been in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the previous 21 days.
