Kyiv, Ukraine — Several waves of Russian ballistic missiles slammed into Kyiv overnight, injuring two people and damaging homes and a kindergarten, just three days before Ukrainian and Russian negotiators meet in Abu Dhabi for US-led peace talks. The Ukrainian Air Force said at least six ballistic missiles were launched at the capital within a few minutes shortly before 11 p.m. local time on Friday, November 6, with more blasts around 1 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. on Saturday. The attack came only hours after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned in his nightly address that Russia was preparing fresh strikes on energy targets, bridges and other infrastructure.

Key Points

• At least six ballistic missiles were fired at Kyiv within minutes shortly before 11 p.m. on Friday, with more blasts at 1 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. on Saturday.
• Two people were injured in the capital; a kindergarten and residential buildings were damaged in the Solomianskyi district.
• A Russian jet-powered drone struck a home in the Brovary district outside Kyiv, injuring one person and starting a fire.
• Russia said its overnight strikes hit an energy-storage facility in Bila Tserkva and a dry-cargo vessel in Odesa.
• The attack came three days before US-led talks with Ukrainian and Russian negotiators open in Abu Dhabi.

What Happened

The first salvo arrived shortly before 11 p.m. on Friday, when the Ukrainian Air Force reported at least six ballistic missiles launched at Kyiv within a few minutes. Sirens sounded across the capital as residents headed for shelters and metro stations. Two further rounds of explosions were reported around 1 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, keeping much of the city awake through the night.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said debris struck a five-storey residential building in the western Solomianskyi district and shattered windows at another five-storey building nearby. The Kyiv City Military Administration said two people were injured and are receiving medical care, a building housing a kindergarten was damaged, and a fire broke out at a non-residential building.

Outside the capital, Kyiv Oblast Governor Tymur Tkachenko said a Russian jet-powered drone struck a home in the Brovary district, causing a fire and injuring one person. Russia’s Defence Ministry said separately that its overnight strikes hit an energy-storage facility in Bila Tserkva, south of Kyiv, and a dry-cargo vessel in Odesa. Ukrainian officials did not immediately confirm the damage at either site.

Background and Context

The overnight attack followed a direct warning from Ukraine’s president. Hours before the missiles arrived, Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address that Russia was preparing new attacks on energy targets, bridges and other infrastructure. The warning proved accurate within hours. Ballistic missiles travel at several times the speed of sound, giving residents very little warning.

Earlier the same week, a Russian strike on an aid distribution site in Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhzhia region, killed 29 people, with dozens more missing.

The war is now in its fifth year since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, and diplomacy has intensified. US envoy Steve Witkoff has met both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent weeks, and negotiators are due in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11. A local ceasefire brokered by First Lady Melania Trump in Oleshky recently allowed hundreds of civilians to be evacuated, showing limited agreements are still possible even as the fighting continues. Russian Missiles Strike Kyiv Homes as Peace Talks Approach

Ballistic missiles are among Russia’s hardest weapons to intercept, and when aimed at a dense city, even debris from a successful interception can damage homes, schools and hospitals. The damage to a kindergarten in Solomianskyi district, alongside two residential buildings, shows the civilian cost is measured not only in injuries but in disruption: shattered windows in November, children kept from school, families spending the night in shelters.

The attack also lands at a delicate moment for the Abu Dhabi talks. Strikes on the capital days before negotiations are often read as a message — a show of leverage, or an attempt to shape the atmosphere at the table. Ukrainian officials argue attacks on civilians undermine the case for concessions, while Moscow describes its strikes as aimed at military and energy targets.

Reactions and Quotes

President Zelenskyy’s warning, delivered hours before the attack, framed the night: he told Ukrainians Russia was preparing new strikes on energy targets, bridges and other infrastructure — a forecast borne out by the missiles over Kyiv and the reported hits in Bila Tserkva and Odesa. Ukrainian officials cite such warnings as evidence the campaign against civilian infrastructure is deliberate and planned.

Mayor Klitschko’s office confirmed the debris strike on the five-storey building in Solomianskyi district and the shattered windows at a second residential building. Governor Tkachenko confirmed the drone strike on a home in Brovary district and the injury there. Russia’s Defence Ministry said its overnight strikes had hit an energy-storage facility in Bila Tserkva and a dry-cargo vessel in Odesa, presenting the operation as aimed at logistical and energy targets rather than residential areas.

Why It Matters

The attack matters for three reasons. First, Kyiv remains exposed to ballistic missile strikes despite years of investment in air defence, and residents still face sleepless nights and danger. Second, it comes as winter approaches, when attacks on energy infrastructure can leave households without heat and power. Third, it sets the tone for the Abu Dhabi talks, testing whether diplomacy can advance while the bombing continues — and whether either side will pause the fighting to give negotiations a chance. What Happens Next

Repair crews will spend the coming days boarding up shattered windows, assessing damage and restoring services in Solomianskyi district, while the injured recover in hospital. Air defence commanders will review how the missiles were tracked and intercepted, and whether more systems are needed around the capital ahead of winter. Attention will then shift to Abu Dhabi, where negotiators meet on November 10-11 under US auspices. Whether the attack changes the tone of the talks will become clear once the delegations sit down.
