More than 1,530 flights were cancelled across the United States on Saturday, November 7, 2026, as the air travel crisis deepened on day two of the FAA's emergency flight cuts. FlightAware counted about 6,000 delays too, as staffing problems hit 42 airport towers and centres in at least 12 major cities. At Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson, the world's busiest airport, average delays hit 282 minutes, with ground delay programmes at nine airports. More than 1,000 Sunday cancellations were already reported, and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned deeper cuts, up to 20 percent, may follow if more controllers fail to report.

Key Points

• More than 1,530 flights were cancelled across the US on Saturday, November 7, 2026, up from about 1,025 on Friday, with about 6,000 delayed, according to FlightAware.
• Staffing issues hit 42 airport towers and centres in at least 12 major cities, including Atlanta, Newark, San Francisco, Chicago and New York, with ground delay programmes at nine airports.
• Average delays reached 282 minutes in Atlanta. Major carriers cancelled roughly 700 flights under the FAA mandate and cut more because of controller absences.
• The disruption runs into Sunday, with more than 1,000 cancellations already reported, and Duffy warned of deeper cuts, up to 20 percent.
• The federal shutdown hit day 39 on Saturday, the longest in US history, with about 13,000 controllers and 50,000 screeners working without pay. The Senate was due to meet in a rare weekend session on funding.

What Happened

Saturday's numbers were worse than Friday's in almost every measure. On Friday, the first day of the FAA's emergency order, more than 1,000 flights were cancelled and over 4,300 delayed. On Saturday, cancellations jumped past 1,530 and delays reached about 6,000, though the order had not changed. The difference was people: controllers unpaid for 39 days kept calling out, and the system had less slack to absorb them.

The FAA pointed to staffing problems at 42 airport towers and control centres in at least 12 major cities. Ground delay programmes, which hold departing flights on the ground to stop arrivals piling up at a congested airport, ran at nine airports. Atlanta bore the worst of it, with average delays of 282 minutes, close to five hours, in and out of Hartsfield-Jackson.

Background and Context

The flight cuts took effect on Friday, November 7, the first nationwide reduction in scheduled flights since 9/11. The FAA ordered airlines to cut 4 percent of domestic flights at 40 of the busiest US airports from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., rising to 6 percent on November 11, 8 percent on November 13 and 10 percent on November 14 if the shutdown continues. International flights are exempt, and airlines over their limit face a 75,000-dollar fine per flight.

Duffy and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford announced the order on Wednesday, November 5, as a safety measure. About 13,000 controllers and 50,000 screeners work without pay, and absenteeism tops 30 percent at some airports. The FAA was already about 3,500 controllers short before the shutdown, so every absence hits harder. At the full 10 percent cut, Cirium estimated up to 1,800 flights and 268,000 seats a day affected.

Flight Cancellations Spread Beyond the 40 Airports

Major carriers cancelled roughly 700 flights under the FAA mandate on Saturday, then cut more because controllers were not there to handle them. The official list covers only 40 airports, but the effects reach further: a cancelled Atlanta flight can strand a connecting passenger in a city not on the list, and a delayed Chicago departure can throw off the rest of an aircraft's day.

The mandate sets a floor, not a ceiling. When towers are short-staffed, airlines cancel extra flights to protect the ones they can still operate safely. Travellers from Newark to San Francisco felt the same squeeze, with long queues and passengers sleeping on terminal seats.

Reactions and Quotes

Secretary Duffy has been blunt about what travellers should expect. Before the order took effect he warned of "mass chaos" including delays, cancellations and possible airspace closures if the shutdown drags on, and Saturday's figures bore that out. He now warns deeper cuts, up to 20 percent, may be needed if more controllers fail to report, a step that would ground far more flights than the current order.

The FAA calls the cuts a safety valve, not a punishment for travellers. With controllers working without pay and absenteeism climbing, fewer planes in the sky keeps the ones that fly safe. The airlines have not disputed the safety case, but the cuts leave them choosing which passengers to disappoint, and regional routes and smaller cities are likely to lose service first.

Why It Matters

The flight chaos turns a political standoff in Washington into a daily cost for ordinary people. A cancelled flight is a missed meeting, a ruined weekend, a family kept apart, and Saturday's disruption hit on one of the busiest travel days of the week. With more than 1,000 Sunday cancellations already reported, the damage compounds before the new week begins.

Air travel touches every part of the economy, and visible chaos at the nation's airports pressures both parties in Washington in a way closed museums and furloughed office workers did not. The Senate was due to meet in a rare weekend session on funding, and every extra day of shutdown now costs travellers more flights.

What Happens Next

The next step comes on November 11, when the required cut rises from 4 to 6 percent, then 8 percent on November 13 and 10 percent on November 14 if the shutdown is still going. Each step means more cancellations and longer delays, and airlines will keep choosing which routes to protect and which to sacrifice. If Duffy's warning of cuts up to 20 percent becomes reality, the disruption would be far deeper.

Whether the cuts deepen depends on whether Congress and the White House reach a funding deal. The Senate's rare weekend session is the first test of whether the flight chaos is moving negotiations. Until a deal is reached, travellers should check flight status before leaving for the airport and allow extra time: the shutdown has lasted 39 days, and every extra day costs more flights.
