What Happened

Wednesday morning at the Chili's in Forest City, a small town in Rutherford County, began like any other. An employee preparing the bar for lunch service reached for what was believed to be sugar, a container left near the margarita station, and used it to prepare the day's first margaritas. It was not sugar. It was a granulated degreasing chemical, an industrial grease-cutting cleaner, stored in an unlabeled container.

Three customers ordered margaritas shortly after the restaurant opened. The first sips told them something was badly wrong. All three immediately suffered chemical burns in and around their mouths and left to seek treatment. Two employees later tasted it and reported similar symptoms, bringing the total to five. The health district has not named the chemical or said how serious the injuries were.

Background: How a Cleaning Chemical Reached the Bar

The chain of events began two days before anyone was hurt, and each step on its own looked harmless. On Monday, October 26, a contractor was power-washing the exterior of the restaurant. The contractor gave a granulated degreaser to a restaurant employee. That employee put the chemical in an unlabeled container, which was then brought inside and left near the bar.

That unlabeled container is the heart of the story. In a busy restaurant, containers of white granulated substances look alike. Sugar, salt and a granulated degreaser can all look like pale powders, and without a label nothing tells them apart. Food safety rules require chemicals to be stored away from food, in labeled containers. An unlabeled container left beside a bar broke that basic rule.

Chili's Margarita Chemical Burns: What Health Officials Found

The Foothills Health District's response followed the standard playbook for a food safety incident. Suspending the food service permit at once stops the restaurant from serving food while the risk is assessed, and it sends a clear signal that the problem is being taken seriously. The district then ordered the affected areas and equipment cleaned and sanitised, which matters because residue on bar tools could contaminate further drinks.

The investigation was completed on Thursday, October 29, one day after the incident, and the permit was reinstated. That quick turnaround suggests inspectors were satisfied the contamination was limited to the one container and the drinks made from it. It does not mean the incident was minor: five people sought urgent care, and mouth burns can be serious, depending on the chemical and how much was swallowed.

Reactions

Chili's described the incident as an isolated one and said it took immediate action to support those affected. The company has not said what that support involved, or whether the Forest City restaurant has changed its chemical storage or labeling practices. The brief statement leaves room for further questions about what went wrong and what will change.

The Foothills Health District has issued no detailed public report beyond confirming the suspension, investigation and reinstatement. Its silence on the chemical's identity and on the severity of the injuries is notable. None of the victims has been publicly identified.

Why It Matters

This incident matters because it exposes a gap that exists in restaurants everywhere, not just in Forest City. Every restaurant kitchen and bar handles food ingredients and industrial cleaning chemicals, often in the same building. The rules are simple, labeling, separate storage, and never putting chemicals in food containers, but they depend on people following them every time. One unlabeled container, left in the wrong place for two days, was enough to injure five people.

It also matters because the victims did nothing wrong. They ordered a drink at a national chain restaurant and trusted that what was served to them was safe. Chemical contamination is one of the most dangerous kinds of food safety failure because it can act fast, cause serious injury, and be hard to detect until someone is already hurt. A margarita that looks and smells normal can carry a corrosive chemical, and the first warning a customer gets is pain.

What Happens Next

The restaurant is open again, its permit reinstated after the health district's investigation and the required cleaning. In the short term, the focus will be on the five people hurt and their recovery. Mouth burns can take time to heal, and follow-up care may be needed. No lawsuit has been reported.

Longer term, the questions are about prevention. Will Chili's review how chemicals are handled at its restaurants? Will the health district publish more detail, including the chemical's identity? None of those questions has an answer yet. For now, the Forest City Chili's is serving food and drinks again.
