Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Mossad chief Roman Gofman planned a secret operation against Iran on the eve of Israel's October 27 election, according to a report broadcast by Israel's Channel 12 on Friday, November 6, 2026. The Netanyahu Mossad Iran operation was stopped only after an Israeli security operative made a mistake that tipped off the United States, and Washington moved quickly to quash it. The Prime Minister's Office denies it; the Times of Israel stressed it is unsourced and unconfirmed.

Key Points

• Channel 12 reported that Netanyahu and Mossad chief Roman Gofman sought an operation against Iran on the eve of Israel's October 27 election.
• Other senior security officials opposed the plan, fearing major escalation that could disrupt the election.
• Preparations moved ahead anyway, but an Israeli operative's mistake tipped off the United States, and Washington quickly quashed the operation.
• Channel 12, under Israel's military censorship, did not disclose the nature or target of the planned operation.
• The Prime Minister's Office denied the report, while ex-prime minister Ehud Barak said Netanyahu planned "a provocation" on Iran through the Mossad.

What Happened

According to Channel 12, the plan was developed in the run-up to Israel's general election on October 27, 2026. Netanyahu and Gofman, the head of the Mossad, Israel's foreign intelligence service, sought to carry out an operation against Iran on the eve of the vote. The report did not say what kind of operation was planned or what its target was.

The plan did not have the backing of other senior officials in Israel's security establishment. They feared it could spark a major escalation and prevent the election from taking place as scheduled. Despite that opposition, preparations moved ahead anyway, according to Channel 12.

The operation was stopped by accident rather than by a decision inside Israel. An Israeli security operative made a mistake that tipped off the United States, the report said. Once Washington learned of it, the United States quickly moved to quash the operation, and it did not go ahead. The broadcast followed earlier Channel 12 reports of an "unprecedented confrontation" between Netanyahu and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir.

Background: A War, an Election and a Fragile Pause

The reported plan came at a moment of extraordinary tension. The war between the United States and Iran, which began on February 28, 2026, was in its ninth month, and Israel has been a central party to the confrontation. The United States has carried out strikes on Iranian targets, including the secret raids on Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz. Vice President JD Vance said on November 2 that Washington had made "progress" in talks with Iran.

Israel's October 27 election was held against that backdrop. A military operation against Iran in the days before the vote would have risked a regional escalation at the very moment Israelis were going to the polls. The Netanyahu-Zamir clash was followed by a treason investigation involving opposition leader Avigdor Liberman.

Netanyahu Mossad Iran Operation: What Channel 12 Reported and What It Did Not

The most striking feature of the Channel 12 report is how much it leaves out. It does not name a target, describe a method, or say how far preparations had advanced before the United States intervened. The Times of Israel stressed that the report is unsourced and unconfirmed, and no other Israeli or American outlet has independently verified it.

What the report does establish, if accurate, is a chain of events with serious implications. The prime minister and the Mossad chief were willing to pursue an operation that the rest of the security establishment opposed. The operation was stopped not by an Israeli decision but by an American one, after a tip-off that was itself accidental. For now, the account rests entirely on Channel 12's reporting, which has offered no documents, recordings or named sources.

Reactions and Quotes

The Prime Minister's Office moved quickly to deny the report. In a statement, it said: "The prime minister himself clarified in real time that an attack before the Israeli elections was not on the agenda."

Former prime minister Ehud Barak gave a very different account. Speaking to Channel 12 on Thursday, Barak said Netanyahu planned "a provocation" relating to Iran "via the Mossad, behind the back of the IDF chief of staff." His words suggest the military chief of staff was kept out of the loop. The White House has not publicly commented, and there has been no public statement from the Mossad.

Why It Matters

If the Channel 12 report is accurate, it reveals a deep split at the top of Israel's security establishment at a moment of war. A prime minister and an intelligence chief pursuing a military operation against the objections of other senior security officials would raise fundamental questions about who decides when Israel goes to war.

It also matters because of the American role. The United States is Israel's closest ally and its partner in the war against Iran, yet in this account Washington acted to stop an Israeli operation, not to support it. It also matters for diplomacy: Trump has said a deal with Tehran is "coming together very nicely," and an Israeli operation without American backing could have derailed those talks.

What Happens Next

Several questions will decide how far this story goes. The first is whether any other Israeli or American source confirms the Channel 12 report, or whether documents or named officials emerge to support it. The second is whether the Prime Minister's Office offers a fuller denial, or whether Netanyahu himself addresses the report in public. The third is whether the Knesset or Israel's security cabinet demands an inquiry into who authorised the planning and who was kept in the dark. For now, the operation remains a reported plan that never happened.
