US Border Patrol agents seized more than 1,435 pounds of suspected cocaine worth an estimated $9.8 million in two vehicle inspections just three minutes apart at the San Clemente checkpoint in Southern California, US Customs and Border Protection said. The back-to-back stops on Saturday, October 25, 2026, netted 550 vacuum-sealed packages hidden inside black garbage bags. Both drivers were arrested, and the Drug Enforcement Administration has taken custody of the drivers and the suspected narcotics as federal prosecutors prepare charges.

The seizure stands out for its size and speed. In three minutes, agents stopped two vehicles, sent both to secondary inspection and found hundreds of pounds of drugs in each, after a Border Patrol canine alerted to both vehicles.

Key Points

• Border Patrol agents seized more than 1,435 pounds of suspected cocaine valued at $9.8 million at the San Clemente checkpoint on Saturday, October 25, 2026.
• The drugs were found in two vehicle stops three minutes apart, with 550 vacuum-sealed packages hidden inside black garbage bags.
• Agents sent both vehicles to secondary inspection after suspicious behaviour, including one driver trying to reverse out of the checkpoint.
• A Border Patrol canine alerted agents to both vehicles, and field tests gave presumptive positive results for cocaine.
• Both drivers were arrested, and the Drug Enforcement Administration took custody of the drivers and the narcotics pending federal prosecution.

What Happened

The two stops unfolded in quick succession at the San Clemente Border Patrol checkpoint, the fixed inspection station on Interstate 5 in Orange County that screens northbound traffic travelling from the San Diego area toward Los Angeles. According to US Customs and Border Protection, agents became suspicious of the first vehicle as it approached the checkpoint and referred it to secondary inspection for a closer look. Moments later, a second vehicle drew the same attention, and agents moved it to secondary inspection as well.

In one of the two encounters, the driver tried to reverse out of the checkpoint rather than proceed through inspection, a move that immediately raised agents' suspicions and triggered the deeper search. At secondary inspection, a Border Patrol canine was brought in and alerted to both vehicles, signalling the possible presence of narcotics. Agents then searched the vehicles and found the cocaine concealed inside black garbage bags, packed in 550 vacuum-sealed bundles. Field tests gave presumptive positive results for cocaine, and agents arrested both drivers at the scene.

Background and Context

The San Clemente checkpoint sits on Interstate 5, the main highway linking San Diego and the border region with Los Angeles. It is one of the busiest Border Patrol checkpoints in the country, and smugglers using the highway must either pass through it or take long detours on secondary roads, which is why large loads are regularly discovered there.

Traffickers commonly vacuum-seal cocaine and hide it in ordinary-looking bags to mask the smell and make loads harder to spot. Black garbage bags are a familiar concealment method because they look unremarkable and can hold dozens of tightly wrapped packages. That is why canine teams play a central role at checkpoints: a trained dog can detect narcotics a visual inspection would miss. For a recent example of how trafficking networks reach into public institutions, read about the Mexican judge arrested in Colombia over a $2 million bribe in the Ryan Wedding cocaine case.

San Clemente Cocaine Seizure: Three Minutes, Two Cars, $9.8 Million

The numbers behind the seizure tell the story of a major interception. The 550 vacuum-sealed packages weighed more than 1,435 pounds in total, roughly 2.6 pounds per package. At the estimated street value of $9.8 million, the load was worth about $6,800 per pound, reflecting the price cocaine commands once it reaches distribution networks inside the United States.

What makes the case unusual is the timing. The two stops happened just three minutes apart, which means the two loads were travelling the same corridor at almost the same moment. Whether the two drivers were working together or were part of separate shipments on the same route is a question investigators will now try to answer. Either way, the checkpoint stopped both loads before they could reach their destinations.

Reactions and Quotes

San Clemente Station Patrol Agent in Charge J.D. Scott praised the agents involved in a statement issued by US Customs and Border Protection, crediting their vigilance and teamwork for the back-to-back seizures. The Drug Enforcement Administration has taken custody of both drivers and the suspected narcotics, the standard next step when a checkpoint seizure of this size is made. Federal prosecutors will now decide on the specific charges, which in cases like this typically include possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. CBP has not released further details about the drivers or the vehicles involved. Why It Matters

A seizure of more than 1,435 pounds of cocaine is significant on its own, but the way it happened matters just as much. Two loads travelling the same highway within minutes of each other suggests traffickers are still willing to move large quantities of cocaine through one of the most heavily watched corridors in the country. Every load stopped at a checkpoint is a load that never reaches dealers and users in Los Angeles and beyond, and a seizure of this scale disrupts the supply chain for the organisation behind it.

What Happens Next

Both drivers are now in federal custody, and the Drug Enforcement Administration will lead the investigation into where the cocaine came from, who organised the shipments and where they were headed. Investigators will examine the vehicles, the drivers' phones and travel records, and any connections between the two stops to determine whether the loads were part of the same operation. The suspected cocaine will undergo laboratory testing to confirm the field-test results, and federal prosecutors are expected to file formal charges in the coming days. The drivers face serious federal drug trafficking charges that carry lengthy prison sentences if convicted.
