Archive of Our Own, the fan fiction library known as AO3, has been offline for more than a week after a cyberattack, leaving millions of readers cut off from the stories they follow every day — and, in the vacuum, a wave of copycat sites has begun republishing writers' work without permission, in one case even selling it back to them as AI-generated audiobooks.

The site went dark unexpectedly on Thursday, October 29, 2026, first showing only a maintenance notice. The Organization for Transformative Works, the non-profit that runs AO3, detected evidence of a security incident the next day, and now estimates restoration will take two to four weeks — possibly up to a month.

Key Points

• AO3 went offline on October 29, 2026; the Organization for Transformative Works detected a security incident on October 30; restoration may take two to four weeks.
• The archive hosts more than 18 million fanworks and has about 11 million registered users.
• The organisation says no posted stories were deleted, no data was lost, and it does not believe the user database was stolen — though it cannot rule that out.
• Desperate readers uploaded thousands of works to public Google Drives, while copycat sites scraped the archive: AO3.life appeared on November 1, many stories sold as AI audiobooks.
• Other clones include ao4.lol, fanfic.party and blk archive; the largest were shut down after takedown notices from writers.

What Happened

For regular readers, the outage arrived without warning: AO3 simply stopped loading on October 29, replaced by a maintenance notice. Only the following day did the Organization for Transformative Works confirm it had found evidence of a security incident.

What the organisation has said so far is measured but worrying. Co-founder Naomi Novik confirmed no posted stories were deleted and no data has been lost. But on the question readers care about most — whether their personal information was taken — the answer is less certain: the organisation does not believe the user database of usernames, emails, IP addresses and hashed passwords was stolen, but it cannot rule that out.

Background: A Volunteer-Run Library Built by Fans

Archive of Our Own launched in 2009 as a fan-built, fan-run alternative to commercial publishing platforms, created by the Organization for Transformative Works to give writers a home where their work would not be deleted, monetised or censored by a company chasing advertising revenue. It grew into a vast, volunteer-maintained library, and in 2019 it won a Hugo Award for Best Related Work.

That history is part of why the outage has hit so hard: AO3 is run entirely by volunteers and funded by donations, with no advertising and no corporate owner to throw emergency resources at a crisis. Its small technical team maintains an enormous site on a shoestring, and restoring it means checking every part of the system before it can safely reopen. A denial-of-service attack knocked it offline in 2023, but this time the damage is far deeper.

AO3 Cyberattack: The Clone Sites Cashing In

Within days, the gap AO3 left behind began to fill with copies. Desperate readers uploaded thousands of works to public Google Drives so others could keep reading, scattering writers' work beyond their control. Then the copycat sites arrived, scraping the archive and republishing its contents under new names.

The most brazen appeared on November 1: AO3.life, carrying thousands of stories lifted from the archive, many sold as AI audiobooks. Its creator, who identified himself as Ganesh, a 17-year-old in India, later replaced the site with an apology. Other clones followed the same pattern, including ao4.lol, fanfic.party and blk archive. For the writers, the clones are a double injury: fan fiction is written for free and shared for free, and the authors never agreed to have their stories republished elsewhere, let alone sold. The largest clones were shut down after takedown notices.

Reactions and Quotes

Novik has been the public face of the response, reassuring readers their stories survive and praising the volunteers restoring the site. She said it will be back soon, crediting the volunteer tech team with keeping "one of the top 20 sites in the world" running.

Among readers, the mood has been described as withdrawal: fans who check AO3 daily feel lost without their regular chapters. Writers have spent the week filing takedown notices and warning each other not to use copycat sites. The community's message has been consistent: wait for the real AO3 to return, and do not feed the copies.

Why It Matters

The AO3 outage matters far beyond one website: it exposes how fragile the internet's volunteer infrastructure can be. AO3 is one of the largest reader-written libraries ever built, yet it runs without advertising, without a corporate owner and without a tech giant's security budget. When attacked, there is no war room of engineers to call in — only volunteers, working in their spare time.

It also matters as a warning about consent in the age of AI: the AO3.life episode showed how fast creative work can be scraped, turned into AI audiobooks and sold the moment its home is undefended. And for millions of readers, the outage is a reminder of how much of daily life depends on platforms nobody owns and few people maintain. AO3's readers did not lose a subscription service. They lost a library.

What Happens Next

The Organization for Transformative Works has said restoration will take two to four weeks, possibly up to a month from the October 30 discovery of the incident — which points to a return sometime in late November, if the work goes to plan. Readers should follow the organisation's official channels for updates rather than trusting copycat sites that claim to be AO3.

Users who reused their AO3 password elsewhere should change it now, since the organisation cannot yet rule out the user database having been taken. Writers whose work appeared on clone sites can file takedown notices — the approach that already shut down the largest copies. When AO3 returns, the test will be whether it comes back whole: all 18 million works intact and the community's trust intact.
