A gunman drove a car onto Krakow's Main Market Square and opened fire on Saturday afternoon, killing five people and injuring at least 12 in one of the deadliest public attacks Poland has seen in years. The Krakow shooting unfolded in the heart of the country's second city, and ended only when police shot and wounded the attacker and took him into custody.

Police have not named the suspect or given a motive, and investigators are also examining a second shooting reported on Dietla Street. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he was being kept informed by the interior minister.

Key Points

• Five people were killed and at least 12 injured when a gunman opened fire in Krakow's Main Market Square on Saturday, November 7, 2026.
• The attacker drove onto the square and fired at random from the vehicle with a rifle, wearing military-style combat gear, police said.
• Police shot and wounded the suspect, who was detained and taken to hospital. His identity and motive have not been released.
• Some reports put the injured at 15, including police officers, and a second shooting on Dietla Street is also under investigation.
• Prime Minister Donald Tusk called it a "tragic shooting". Mass shootings are rare in Poland, and the US ambassador expressed solidarity.

What Happened

The attack began at about 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2026, in Rynek Glowny, the Main Market Square at the centre of Krakow's Old Town. The square, one of the largest medieval market squares in Europe, was busy with shoppers and visitors beneath the towers of St Mary's Basilica.

Police said the man drove a car onto the square and fired at random from the vehicle with a rifle, wearing military-style combat gear. Witnesses described panic as people ran for cover between the market stalls. Officers on patrol responded within minutes, shot and wounded the suspect, and detained him. Five people were confirmed dead and at least 12 injured, with some reports putting the injured at 15. Police officers were among those hurt.

Emergency services sealed off the square as ambulances carried the wounded to hospitals. Forensic teams worked through the afternoon around the abandoned car, while investigators took statements and reviewed security camera footage. Officials are also probing a second shooting on Dietla Street, nearby. Police have not said whether the two incidents are connected.

Background and Context

Krakow, Poland's second city, draws millions of visitors a year to its UNESCO-listed Old Town. The Main Market Square is its centrepiece, a vast cobbled plaza ringed by cafes and historic townhouses. On a Saturday afternoon it would normally be filled with tourists and families, which is part of why the attack has shocked the country.

Mass shootings are rare in Poland, which has some of the strictest gun laws in Europe, with civilian firearm ownership tightly controlled and licences hard to obtain. Random public shootings of this scale are almost unheard of there. The attack is likely to reopen debate about gun licensing and security in crowded public places. It also lands at a tense moment for Poland, a frontline NATO state bordering Ukraine, though police say there is no evidence linking the shooting to those tensions.

Krakow Shooting: What Police Have Said So Far

Police have released only the outline of events: the time and place, the number of dead and injured, and that the suspect was shot, detained and taken to hospital. They have not named him, given his age or nationality, or said anything about a possible motive.

Investigators are examining the gunman's background and how he obtained the rifle and the military-style clothing, the route he took into the square, and whether the Dietla Street shooting is part of the same incident. Officers are reviewing CCTV and appealing for witnesses and mobile phone footage. Polish media have reported that the suspect was wounded seriously enough to need hospital treatment, which may delay questioning.

Reactions and Quotes

Prime Minister Donald Tusk moved quickly to address the attack, saying police were investigating the "tragic shooting" and that he was being kept informed by the interior minister. The brief statement reflected the gravity of an attack on one of Poland's most famous public spaces.

The US ambassador to Poland expressed solidarity with the victims and their families. Messages of condolence also arrived from other European capitals and from Polish civic and religious leaders. Local officials urged residents to avoid the city centre, and support services were made available to survivors and to the families of those killed. As night fell, flowers and candles began appearing near the police cordon.

Why It Matters

The Krakow shooting matters first because five people were killed and more than a dozen injured where families shop, meet friends and show visitors the city. For the victims' families and the survivors, the attack will leave lasting trauma, and for Krakow it will change how the city thinks about the safety of its most open space.

Beyond the human cost, the attack raises hard questions. How did a gunman reach the centre of a crowded historic square in a car and with a rifle? What do police know about the second reported shooting on Dietla Street? The answers will shape debate over vehicle barriers, more armed patrols in city centres and how firearms are obtained and tracked. It also tests Poland's sense of security as a NATO frontline state bordering Ukraine.

What Happens Next

The investigation is now the priority. Police will hold the square while forensic work is completed. Detectives will interview survivors, witnesses and the suspect once he is well enough, and will examine the rifle, the car and any digital evidence for clues about planning and motive.

Authorities are expected to give a fuller update once the injured have been treated and the dead formally identified, and once the link — or lack of one — between the two shootings is established. If the suspect survives, prosecutors will decide on charges, which would almost certainly include multiple counts of murder and attempted murder. City officials must also decide how and when the square reopens. For now, the square remains a crime scene, and the city is in mourning.
