Washington, D.C. — House Republicans erupted in anger on Friday after President Donald Trump named Stephen Miller his next White House chief of staff, with one lawmaker calling the promotion a “Horrible decision” and another branding the immigration hardliner “a megalomaniac who should have never been given the keys to the Ferrari.” The outburst laid bare the blame game inside the Republican Party three days after voters handed Democrats control of the House and Senate in the November 3 midterms. Several House Republicans told Fox News Digital that Miller, 41, the architect of the administration’s hardline immigration agenda, had cost the party seats.

Key Points

• Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Ind., called Miller’s promotion a “Horrible decision”; an anonymous GOP lawmaker said colleagues were in “utter disbelief.”
• Retiring Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., said Miller “greatly hurt the administration and cost us many seats on Tuesday,” turning a 2:1 immigration advantage into a 2:1 disadvantage.
• A fourth House Republican called Miller “a megalomaniac who should have never been given the keys to the Ferrari,” while saying he is not the reason the party lost.
• Lawmakers said Miller ignored repeated warnings that immigration enforcement was backfiring even in deep-red districts, hurting voters, businesses and donors.
• The White House defended Miller: Lauren Bis called him a key player in the America First agenda, and Vice President JD Vance called him “an amazing patriot.”

What Happened

Trump announced on Friday, November 6, that Miller, currently deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser, will become White House chief of staff starting Monday, November 9, replacing Susie Wiles. Wiles, the first woman to hold the role, is moving to Trump’s political operation. Miller has worked for Trump since 2015 and is widely seen as the driving force behind the administration’s immigration crackdown. The reaction came fast and was unusually public. Just moments before the announcement, several House Republicans had told Fox News Digital that Miller should be fired. Asked about the promotion afterwards, one lawmaker replied with a facepalm emoji. Stutzman called it a “Horrible decision,” and another Republican, speaking anonymously, said colleagues were in “utter disbelief.”

Bacon, who is retiring, was the bluntest. He said Miller “greatly hurt the administration and cost us many seats on Tuesday,” arguing Miller turned a 2:1 immigration advantage into a 2:1 disadvantage. “Many Republicans don’t like him,” Bacon added. A fourth GOP lawmaker called Miller “a megalomaniac who should have never been given the keys to the Ferrari,” while adding that Miller alone is not the reason the party lost.

Background and Context

The backlash lands in the middle of a Republican reckoning. Democrats won the House and Senate on November 3 and are on pace for more than 250 House seats and at least 54 Senate seats, a sweeping defeat that has set off a search for who is to blame, with immigration — once seen as Trump’s strongest issue — now at the centre of that argument.

The tension is not new. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Trump himself told aides Miller “had gone too far” on deportations, after the First Lady complained that people she knew were being apprehended and deported. Enforcement cut illegal crossings to their lowest level in decades, but it also brought clashes in American cities. For months, the warning signs were visible in the party’s own polling. Texas and Florida Republicans privately warned the White House about lost Hispanic support, and counties more than 80 percent Hispanic favoured Democrats by 40 points on November 3. Stutzman tied the damage to Miller’s approach: “Because of his immigration positions, I just think we ruined a lot of our goodwill with Latino voters.”

Stephen Miller Chief of Staff Promotion Divides House Republicans

At the heart of the anger is how Miller ran the policy. Lawmakers said he ignored repeated warnings in group meetings that immigration enforcement was backfiring even in deep-red districts, hurting voters, businesses and donors — warnings that went unheeded until the losses on Tuesday made the cost impossible to ignore.

Not every Republican joined the criticism. House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris praised Miller’s record, and the White House moved quickly to defend the pick: spokeswoman Lauren Bis called him a key player in the America First agenda, and Vice President JD Vance called him “an amazing patriot.”

Reactions and Quotes

The quotes captured the range of feeling in the conference: Stutzman’s “Horrible decision,” the anonymous lawmaker’s “utter disbelief,” Bacon’s political arithmetic, and the fourth lawmaker’s “megalomaniac” jibe.

The defence was just as direct: Bis stood by Miller’s record, Vance praised him as “an amazing patriot,” and Harris praised his record. Miller himself has not publicly responded.

Why It Matters

The chief of staff is the most powerful job in the White House after the president, controlling access to the Oval Office and setting the daily agenda. Promoting Miller signals Trump has no intention of softening the immigration crackdown House Republicans blame for their losses — and puts the architect of that policy in charge of the West Wing as Democrats prepare to investigate ICE and Homeland Security. What Happens Next

Miller starts as chief of staff on Monday, November 9, the same day Wiles moves to Trump’s political operation. The transition comes as Trump has teased further changes, telling CBS’s “60 Minutes” that he plans to terminate some members after the midterm losses. House Republicans will watch whether Miller, now running the West Wing, changes the approach they say cost them the midterms — or doubles down.

Longer term, the fight over Miller is also a fight over the party’s future. Democrats take control of Congress in January 2027. For Republicans, the question is whether promoting the man they blame for their defeat marks a course correction or a refusal to change.
