SMU scored on each of its first eight drives and rolled past Virginia Tech 51-28 on Friday night at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas, riding a record-setting night from quarterback Kevin Jennings and a season-high 569 yards of total offence. Jennings threw for 350 yards and four touchdowns, three of them to wide receiver Yamir Knight, as the Mustangs built a 30-point lead and stayed in the ACC championship and College Football Playoff race.

The win improved SMU to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in ACC play, while Virginia Tech fell to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the conference. It was the most yards the Hokies have allowed all season, and SMU is now 19-4 in ACC play since joining the league, the most wins by any team in that span.

What Happened

D. Green ran 12 yards for a touchdown and Brendan Baird added a 47-yard field goal to make it 10-0 in the first quarter. Ethan Grunkemeyer's one-yard touchdown run cut it to 10-7 early in the second, before Baird's 26-yard field goal restored a six-point cushion.

The game's biggest swing came midway through the second quarter. Marques White sacked Grunkemeyer for a 13-yard loss and forced a fumble, which White recovered at the Virginia Tech 47. Six seconds later, Jennings found Knight for a 46-yard touchdown that made it 20-7. Overton answered with a 22-yard touchdown run to make it 20-14 with 2:33 left in the half, but Virginia Tech lost safety Tyson Flowers to a targeting ejection, and Baird hit a career-long 50-yard field goal with seven seconds left for a 23-14 half-time lead.

Virginia Tech's first drive of the third quarter went backwards, and SMU drove 63 yards in seven plays before Kendrick Raphael scored from three yards out to make it 30-14. After a fourth-down stop at the SMU 25, C. Rhodes broke a 59-yard run, and Jennings found Knight for a 13-yard touchdown to make it 37-14. A 15-play, 82-yard drive capped by Knight's third touchdown catch made it 44-14 early in the fourth. Virginia Tech answered twice, but SMU had the final word: Jennings found Jalen Cooper for a 50-yard touchdown with 3:13 left, and Baird's extra point made it 51-28. Grunkemeyer's next pass was intercepted by J. Wyrick at the SMU 27, and the Mustangs ran out the clock.

Background and Context

SMU arrived at 6-2 as one of the ACC's most consistent winners since joining the conference, while Virginia Tech came in at 6-3 looking to prove it could beat one of the league's best on the road. The Hokies had not allowed a 500-yard game all season, but SMU's tempo and balance proved too much.

Jennings, one of the most experienced quarterbacks in college football, improved to 26-9 as SMU's starter, and his 350-yard night pushed him past program marks that had stood for years. For Virginia Tech, the night was defined by missed chances: two turnovers, four sacks allowed and a failed fourth-down stop kept the Hokies from ever closing the gap, despite 417 total yards, including 291 passing yards from Grunkemeyer and 123 rushing yards and two touchdowns from Overton.

SMU Beats Virginia Tech 51-28: Jennings' Record Night

The headline numbers belong to Jennings, but the night was a team performance built on balance: SMU finished 8-of-12 on third down, scored on all eight of its opening drives, and outgained Virginia Tech 569-417, running for 219 yards and passing for 350.

Knight's three-touchdown night was the sharpest edge of that attack: his 46-yard score came six seconds after White's strip-sack, his 13-yard catch pushed the lead to 23 points, and his five-yard grab early in the fourth completed the hat-trick. Rhodes ran seven times for 92 yards, Raphael added a rushing score, Baird was perfect with field goals from 47, 26 and 50 yards, and White's two sacks and forced fumble changed the first half. Jennings completed 75 percent of his passes and averaged nearly 11 yards per attempt.

Reactions

The win keeps SMU in control of its own path in the ACC. At 5-2 in the league, the Mustangs remain one of the teams chasing a place in the conference championship game, and their 19-4 ACC record since joining the league shows how quickly they have become a power in their new home. A 7-2 record with three weeks left keeps SMU firmly in the Playoff discussion. For Virginia Tech, the defeat is a setback rather than a disaster: the Hokies are still 6-3 and can finish strongly for a good bowl game.

Why It Matters

The result matters because it keeps SMU's season alive on two fronts. In the ACC, the Mustangs are still chasing the championship game in Charlotte, and every win tightens their grip on a place there. Nationally, the Playoff committee watches conference champions and one-loss contenders closely, and a 7-2 SMU team with a high-powered offence is exactly the kind of team that can climb the rankings in November. It also matters for Jennings' legacy: his 80 touchdown passes, 92 total touchdowns and 11,164 yards of total offence put him alongside the greatest quarterbacks in SMU history, and he has time to push those marks further.

What Happens Next

SMU has three regular-season games left and must keep winning to reach the ACC championship game and stay in the Playoff conversation. Virginia Tech returns home to regroup, still chasing a strong finish and a good bowl destination, though the defence must tighten up after allowing 569 yards. The ACC race now moves into its final stretch ahead of the championship game in Charlotte in early December.
