RENO, Nev. — No. 22 New Mexico did far more than win a football game on Friday night. The Lobos beat Nevada 31-3 at Mackay Stadium, winning their first game as an AP-ranked team in school history and their first game ever in Reno, where they had gone 0-4-1 before kickoff.

Quarterback Toa Fa'avae led two first-quarter touchdown drives, running back Scottre Humphrey ran for 107 yards and two touchdowns, and the Lobos held Nevada to minus-9 yards rushing and just 97 total yards. Nevada punted 10 times. New Mexico improved to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in Mountain West play, with an 11th straight conference win.

What Happened

New Mexico set the tone from the opening drive. Fa'avae guided the Lobos down the field, and Humphrey capped the march with a 2-yard touchdown run. Moments later, Kiefer Sibley broke free for a 31-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and the Lobos were firmly in control.

Fa'avae was efficient and composed all night, completing 14 of 20 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown and adding 34 yards on eight carries. His 25-yard touchdown pass to tight end Cade Keith early in the fourth quarter put the game beyond doubt, and kicker Nick Romero finished the scoring with a 37-yard field goal. Humphrey's second touchdown came after Darren Agu recovered a fumble at the Nevada 5-yard line; Humphrey needed just one play to punch it in from a yard out.

The defence was the most striking part of the win. Nevada quarterback AJ Bianco completed 14 of 31 passes for 106 yards, but he lost a fumble on a sack by Brett Karhu that set up a New Mexico score, and the Wolf Pack running game went backwards all night. Nevada's average starting field position was its own 21-yard line, and its only points came on a 32-yard Jacob Fernandez field goal late in the first half. Nevada fell to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in Mountain West play.

Background and Context

New Mexico had never been ranked in the AP Top 25 before this season. The Lobos entered the poll at No. 22 this week, and the trip to Reno was their first game carrying a number next to their name. New Mexico did the opposite, playing its most complete game of the season.

The venue added another layer of history: the Lobos had never won in Reno. The win was also their 11th straight conference victory, and their 17th win since the start of 2025, the most successful two-year stretch in school history. A programme that spent years near the bottom of its conference is now unbeaten in Mountain West play and ranked in the top 25, with a defence that leads the nation in scoring defence.

New Mexico Lobos Make History in Reno

The history books will record Friday, November 6, 2026, as the night the New Mexico Lobos stopped being a surprise and started being a statement. A first AP ranking, a first win in Reno, an 8-1 record and the country's best scoring defence add up to the best run the programme has ever had.

Fa'avae's performance summed up the team's identity. He did not need to throw for 300 yards, because the Lobos did not need him to. He managed the game and let Humphrey and the line control the tempo. Humphrey's 107 yards on 17 carries came against a defence that knew the run was coming and still could not stop it. And the Lobos handled the occasion without nerves or complacency, scoring on their opening drive and never trailing after the first quarter.

Reactions and What It Means

The result landed around college football as one of the notable scores of Friday night, alongside No. 22 Arizona's 29-28 comeback win over TCU, another ranked team surviving a late scare. But where Arizona needed a 37-yard field goal with 38 seconds left, New Mexico never looked in danger, and that contrast is part of why the Lobos' win drew attention.

The Associated Press noted that with three regular-season games remaining, New Mexico inches closer to a potential playoff berth, but faces an uphill battle as a Group of Six team competing with the likes of No. 20 Boise State. The playoff door is open, but the path is narrow. For Nevada, a 3-6 record and a home loss by 28 points leave the Wolf Pack playing for pride.

Why It Matters

This win matters because it changes what New Mexico can aim for. A ranked team with an 8-1 record and the nation's best scoring defence is a genuine contender for a conference title and a real candidate for a College Football Playoff place. It matters, too, because of how the programme got here: built on defence, on a running game, and on winning the close, physical games that used to slip away. The 17 wins since the start of 2025 show a team that has learned how to win.

What Happens Next

New Mexico returns home to host UNLV on Saturday, November 14, with real stakes for the Mountain West title race and the Lobos' playoff hopes. Nevada, meanwhile, travels to Northern Illinois on Saturday, November 14, looking to regroup after a night in which almost nothing worked.

For the Lobos, the message of Friday night is simple: keep doing what they are doing. Run the ball, play defence, and let the history take care of itself.
