Clemson beat Syracuse 18-13 on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the JMA Wireless Dome, and the win gave head coach Dabo Swinney his 118th ACC regular-season victory, the most in conference history. The Tigers did it the hard way: they scored no offensive touchdown all afternoon, relying on four field goals from kicker Nolan Hauser and a defensive touchdown from Jahiem Lawson to survive a late Syracuse rally and move to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in ACC play.

It was Clemson's first win without an offensive touchdown since beating South Carolina in 2023, and it kept the Tigers alive in the ACC title race. Syracuse had a genuine chance to spoil Swinney's milestone, cutting the lead to five points with 3:12 remaining before Clemson sealed the game on the ground.

Key Points

• Clemson beat Syracuse 18-13 on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York, improving to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the ACC.
• The win gave Dabo Swinney his 118th ACC regular-season victory, a new conference record, passing the long-standing mark of 117 held by Florida State's Bobby Bowden.
• Clemson scored no offensive touchdown, its first such win since the 2023 South Carolina game, with kicker Nolan Hauser accounting for the Tigers' first 12 points on field goals of 32, 36, 37 and 54 yards.
• Defensive end Jahiem Lawson returned a recovered backward pass 22 yards for a touchdown with 6:39 left in the third quarter, stretching a 12-6 lead to 18-6.
• Ashton Hampton intercepted Syracuse quarterback Steve Angeli in the end zone on third-and-goal from the Clemson 3-yard line with 6:03 remaining, and Tait Reynolds sealed the win with third-down runs of 10 and 13 yards.

What Happened

Clemson led just 9-6 at halftime despite moving the ball in bursts. A 53-yard run by Jarvis Green and a 53-yard completion to Wesco both ended in field goals rather than touchdowns. Hauser was perfect on the day, and his 27th field goal of the season tied Clemson's single-season record while also setting the program's career mark for makes from at least 50 yards.

The breakthrough came from the defence. With 6:39 left in the third quarter, Lawson recovered a backward pass from Angeli and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown, with pressure from Kourtney Kelly helping to force the loose ball. The score extended a 12-6 advantage to 18-6 and gave Clemson the cushion it would need.

Syracuse refused to go away. Hampton protected the lead in the fourth quarter, intercepting Angeli in the end zone on third-and-goal from the Clemson 3 with 6:03 remaining. The Orange broke through on a 33-yard touchdown pass with 3:12 left, cutting the deficit to 18-13, but Clemson answered by keeping the ball. Reynolds converted third-and-eight with a 10-yard run, then picked up another first down on a 13-yard carry after the two-minute timeout, and the Tigers ran out the clock.

Background: Swinney and the ACC Record

Swinney entered Saturday tied with Bowden, the legendary Florida State coach, on 117 ACC regular-season wins. Bowden's mark had stood as the conference standard since his retirement, built across decades in which Florida State dominated the league after joining in 1992. Swinney, who took over at Clemson midway through the 2008 season, has now passed him.

The record arrives in a season that has tested Clemson. The Tigers came into Syracuse at 5-3, a week after scoring 36 points in a win at Florida State, the same game that cost the Seminoles their head coach. Saturday's performance was the opposite kind of victory: a defensive grind in a loud dome, on the road, with the offence misfiring in the red zone.

Dabo Swinney's ACC Record: 118 Conference Wins

The number itself tells the story of an era. One hundred and eighteen ACC regular-season wins means nearly two decades of winning at a rate few coaches in college football history have matched. Swinney's Clemson teams have won two national championships, in 2016 and 2018, and he is already the winningest coach in Clemson history.

Records like this are usually celebrated with a comfortable win. Swinney's came in a game his team nearly lost, which may make it more fitting than a blowout would have been. The 118th win was earned by a kicker who did not miss, a defensive end who turned a loose ball into six points, and a cornerback who took the ball away at his own goal line.

Reactions

The mood around the Clemson programme after the game was one of relief as much as celebration. A loss at Syracuse would have ended any realistic hope of reaching the ACC championship game. Instead, the Tigers leave the dome with the record, a 6-3 record, and a 4-2 conference mark that keeps them in the race.

For Syracuse, the reaction will be frustration at the chances left on the field. The Orange had the ball in scoring position late and twice came away with nothing. In a game decided by five points, those two plays were the difference.

Why It Matters

The record matters because it marks the passing of an era. Bowden's ACC win total was one of those numbers that looked untouchable, set by a coach who defined the conference for a generation. Swinney passing it is a reminder that Clemson's rise under his leadership is a sustained run that now spans eighteen seasons.

The game itself matters for what it revealed about this Clemson team. A side that can win without scoring an offensive touchdown is a side with a defence and a kicking game it can trust, and those are the units that decide close games in November. Hauser's four field goals, including a 54-yarder, and Lawson's defensive score were the difference between a win and a loss.

What Happens Next

Clemson returns home next Saturday to face Georgia Tech at 12:30 p.m., with the ACC race still open and the Tigers needing to win out to give themselves the best chance of reaching the championship game. The offence will need to finish drives after Saturday's red-zone struggles.
