Three people were arrested in East Dearborn, Michigan, on Saturday morning, November 7, 2026, when federal immigration agents carried out an enforcement operation that local police say they knew nothing about until it was over. The Dearborn ICE arrests, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) near Warren Avenue and Mead Street, have renewed questions about immigration enforcement in Michigan.

Dearborn police said they were given no advance notice and were contacted by federal authorities only after the three arrests. As of Saturday afternoon, federal officials had not provided the names or reasons for the arrests.

Key Points

• ICE and HSI agents arrested three people near Warren Avenue and Mead Street in East Dearborn at about 8 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2026.
• Dearborn police said they received no advance notice and were contacted only after the arrests.
• As of Saturday afternoon, federal authorities had not given local police the names of those arrested or the reasons for their arrests.
• Police Chief Issa Shahin urged federal authorities to communicate with local departments when operating in the community.
• The incident follows a similar operation near an elementary school in Canton, Michigan, on October 20, also carried out without advance notice to local police.

What Happened

The operation took place near the intersection of Warren Avenue and Mead Street in East Dearborn. The Dearborn Police Department said the federal operation by ICE and HSI resulted in three arrests at about 8 a.m. on Saturday.

What set the operation apart, in the department's account, was not the arrests themselves but the silence around them. "Federal authorities contacted the Dearborn Police Department after the arrests had taken place," the department said. "There was no advance notification or coordination with the City of Dearborn or the Police Department." Hours later, the department said it is still seeking more information. The ICE Detroit field office and the Department of Homeland Security did not comment to the Detroit Free Press as of Saturday afternoon.

Background and Context

Dearborn, a city of about 110,000 people in Wayne County just west of Detroit, is home to one of the largest Arab American communities in the United States, where immigration enforcement is a sensitive subject. When federal agents operate without telling local police, the department must field questions from residents and officials without the basic facts it needs.

Saturday's operation was not the first time Michigan police said they were caught off guard by a federal immigration action. On October 20, Canton police and Plymouth-Canton Community Schools said they had no advance notice of immigration enforcement activity near Hulsing Elementary School in Canton. That prompted a shelter-in-place of more than an hour at the school, drawing sharp criticism from parents and local officials. Enforcement has intensified across the country during 2026, and in Michigan it has drawn particular attention in the Detroit area.

Dearborn has also been in the federal spotlight for a separate matter: in late October, the FBI arrested two men there over an alleged ISIS-inspired plot targeting LGBTQ+ bars, and a third man was charged in early November. That case is unrelated to Saturday's operation. Read more: Michigan Halloween terror plot widens as third man is charged.

Dearborn ICE Arrests Raise Questions About Federal-Local Coordination

The central question is practical: how is a local police department supposed to keep a community informed, and keep the peace, when it does not know federal agents are operating on its streets? Chief Shahin described communication as a public safety tool rather than a courtesy.

"Communication between federal agencies and local law enforcement helps support public safety and ensures we can respond accurately to residents' questions and concerns," Shahin said in the department's news release. "We encourage federal authorities to communicate with our department when conducting operations in our community." Its meaning is plain: when residents see federal agents making arrests on a Saturday morning and call the police department for answers, the department wants to be able to give them. Advance notice does not give a local department a veto over a federal operation, but it does let the department prepare and answer the public accurately.

Reactions and Quotes

The department's statement was the only official account of the operation available on Saturday. Beyond Chief Shahin's call for better communication, the department said it is still seeking more information from federal authorities and did not speculate about the identities of the arrested people or the reasons for their detention. Neither ICE's Detroit field office nor Homeland Security commented as of Saturday afternoon.

Why It Matters

The Dearborn operation matters for reasons that go beyond the three arrests. First, it affects public trust: when people see arrests happening on their street and the local police cannot explain them, confidence in both levels of government suffers. Second, it affects public safety: the Canton episode showed what can happen when an operation takes place near a school without warning, with students and staff sheltering in place for more than an hour.

Third, the operation comes at a time of heightened anxiety about immigration enforcement in many communities. In cities with large immigrant populations, news of federal agents spreads quickly on social media, often with rumours filling the gaps left by official silence. Finally, it raises a question about accountability: if federal agencies do not tell local police who they have arrested or why, it becomes harder for lawyers, family members and elected representatives to establish what happened. The immigration debate is also playing out in individual cases, including a high-profile removal fight involving an actor whose biggest film is opening as he faces deportation. What Happens Next

The Dearborn Police Department says it is still seeking more information from federal authorities, and the next step is likely to be the release of that information: the names of the three people arrested, the grounds for their arrests and where they are being held. Whether ICE or Homeland Security responds to the request, or to Chief Shahin's call for better communication, will show whether the coordination problem is addressed or repeated. Any further developments, including charges, court appearances or releases, will be reported as they become known.
