Michael Sanft, the Las Vegas defence lawyer who represented Duane "Keffe D" Davis in the Tupac Shakur murder trial, was found dead in his Las Vegas home on Friday morning, November 6, 2026, at 55 — just one week after filing an appeal challenging his client's murder conviction. Police said the death did not appear suspicious. The cause and manner of death are pending with the coroner.

Davis, 63, is the only person ever charged in the 1996 drive-by shooting that killed the rapper Tupac Shakur. Sanft stood beside him through the trial that ended in August with a conviction and a 40-years-to-life sentence. The appeal he filed on October 30 was the next step in that fight. Now, with no replacement counsel named, its future is uncertain.

What Happened

Sanft was found dead in his Las Vegas home on Friday morning, November 6, 2026. His friend Michael Sloan confirmed the death to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, and the Clark County Coroner's Office confirmed it to USA Today. The cause and manner of death were pending, and Las Vegas police said the death did not appear suspicious.

Sanft was a well-known figure in the city's courtrooms, where he worked as the lead trial attorney at SOS Injury Lawyers. On October 30, exactly one week before his death, he filed a notice of appeal challenging Davis's conviction and the 40-years-to-life sentence handed down on October 13. No replacement counsel had been named as of Friday.

Background: The Tupac Shakur Murder Case

Tupac Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, after a Mike Tyson fight at the MGM Grand. He was 25. For nearly three decades the case remained one of the most famous unsolved murders in American music — and no one was charged.

That changed in September 2023, when a Las Vegas grand jury indicted Duane "Keffe D" Davis, a former South Side Compton Crips leader, on a charge of murder with the use of a deadly weapon. Prosecutors said Davis orchestrated the shooting to avenge an attack on his nephew, Orlando Anderson, hours earlier. Davis had spoken publicly about his role in interviews and a 2019 memoir, and prosecutors used those statements against him.

On August 31, 2026, a jury found Davis guilty of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon, and on October 13 a judge sentenced him to 40 years to life in prison. Sanft, who had represented Davis pro bono, stood by his team's work after the verdict. Shakur remains one of the best-selling recording artists of all time, with more than 75 million records sold worldwide.

Michael Sanft's Death: What We Know So Far

What is known about Sanft's death remains limited. The coroner's office confirmed the death but has not announced a cause or manner, which typically takes days or weeks while toxicology and other tests are completed. Police said the death did not appear suspicious, which usually means investigators found no signs of foul play.

Sanft, 55, had built his career in Las Vegas as a trial lawyer, and representing Davis pro bono put him at the centre of one of Nevada's most closely watched trials in years. The appeal filed on October 30 was the defence's next move: a notice of appeal is the first formal step in asking a higher court to review a conviction, and it must be filed within a strict deadline after sentencing. Sanft met that deadline. What happens next depends on whether new counsel is appointed or retained.

Reactions and Quotes

Michael Sloan, Sanft's friend, confirmed the death to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, and the Clark County Coroner's Office confirmed it separately to USA Today. Neither offered further details.

Sanft had spoken publicly after Davis's conviction, defending the work his team had done and standing by his defence. As of Friday, no statement had been released by Davis or his family, and the court had not announced any change in the schedule for the appeal. An appeal is slow — briefs and hearings can take months or years — and the immediate question is who will carry it forward.

Why It Matters

Sanft's death matters for two reasons. The first is the case itself. Davis is the only person ever charged in Tupac Shakur's killing, and his conviction was the first real resolution in a murder unsolved for 29 years. An appeal was always expected, and it was Sanft who filed it. Without him, the appeal must find new hands — and any delay could shape how the conviction is reviewed.

The second is what the case represents. The Shakur murder is a piece of American cultural history, and millions followed the trial because his music still resonates. Sanft's death, one week after he filed the appeal, adds a sudden turn to a story nearly 30 years in the making.

What Happens Next

The coroner's office will determine the cause and manner of death, a process that can take several weeks.

In the Davis case, the court will need to address the question of counsel. Davis is serving a 40-years-to-life sentence, and his appeal — filed on October 30 — remains pending. A new lawyer must be found to prepare and argue it. The appeal process is likely to take many months.
