Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer says some American troops have gone a year without hot water in their barracks, and others sleep in their cars to escape rooms with no air conditioning. Meyer, senior adviser to the Pentagon's Barracks Task Force, described US military housing in a Fox News Digital interview on Thursday, November 5, 2026, after visiting more than eight installations across the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.

Only "a couple" of the bases he has seen are in good shape, Meyer said. At one base, a 19-year-old service member told him that if she could "wave a magic wand" she would just have a hot shower. "It's absolutely heartbreaking," Meyer said.

Key Points

• Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer, senior adviser to the Pentagon's Barracks Task Force, says some US troops have gone a year without hot water and others sleep in their cars.
• Meyer has visited more than eight installations and plans to visit 30 before the end of the year; only "a couple" are in good shape.
• Troops ask for hot showers, laundry facilities, doors that lock, mould-free rooms and light bulbs; photos show mould, water damage and a ceiling hanging over a bed.
• Secretary of War Pete Hegseth created the task force in October 2025 and named Meyer senior adviser on October 19, 2026.
• A 2023 Government Accountability Office investigation found serious hazards in barracks; 12 of 31 recommendations remain outstanding, and the Pentagon's maintenance backlog is $285 billion.

What Happened

Meyer spoke to Fox News Digital on November 5, 2026, about what he has found since becoming senior adviser to the Barracks Task Force, which Hegseth created in October 2025. His message was blunt: some troops have gone a year without hot water, and others sleep in their cars because their barracks have no air conditioning.

Photos from his inspections show mould and water damage on walls and closets, a damaged ceiling hanging over a bed, a sink missing its basin and makeshift lighting. Meyer plans to visit 30 installations before the end of the year, and he has asked for an "authoritative role" so the task force can direct funding and decisions while the Pentagon runs on a continuing resolution through December 11, 2026.

Background and Context

A 2023 investigation by the Government Accountability Office, the watchdog arm of Congress, documented serious health and safety hazards in barracks across the services, including mould, sewage problems and broken heating and cooling systems. Of its 31 recommendations, 12 remain outstanding more than three years later.

A separate watchdog review put the Pentagon's wider facilities maintenance backlog at $285 billion. Hegseth created the Barracks Task Force in October 2025, and naming Meyer — who received the Medal of Honor for his actions in Afghanistan in 2009 — as senior adviser signalled the effort would be taken seriously.

Military Barracks Conditions: What Meyer Found on His Inspections

The details Meyer described are the kind that stay with a visitor. A 19-year-old service member, asked what she would change if she could wave a magic wand, did not ask for better food, more pay or more time off. She asked for a hot shower. Meyer called the moment "absolutely heartbreaking".

The mould in the inspection photos is not a small patch in a corner. It spreads across walls and inside closets, where uniforms are stored, and water damage has warped surfaces and stained ceilings. Doors that do not lock leave young troops, many of them teenagers fresh from basic training, unable to secure their own rooms.

Reactions and Quotes

Meyer's own words carried the interview. On the 19-year-old's wish, he said: "It's absolutely heartbreaking." On his mandate from Hegseth, he said the secretary told him: "He expects me to fix it."

Hegseth has not publicly responded to the interview in detail, but the task force and Meyer's appointment are themselves a response. The Government Accountability Office's findings give Meyer's account an official backbone: its 2023 investigation concluded the department did not know enough about its own barracks and was not fixing them fast enough.

Why It Matters

Barracks house the youngest service members in the American military, many of them 18 or 19, living away from home for the first time on the lowest pay grades. They cannot choose their housing, hire a landlord to fix a leak, or move out.

The conditions are a health issue as well as a comfort issue: mould, sewage leaks and broken heating cause respiratory problems and sleep disruption, and hurt readiness. They also hurt recruitment and retention — the first thing a new recruit sees after basic training is often their barracks room.

What Happens Next

Meyer plans to keep visiting installations, with 30 on his list before the end of the year. Each visit adds to the task force's picture of the problem and to the pressure on the Pentagon to act.

The next test is whether Meyer gets the authority he has asked for, so the task force can direct funding and decisions. Congress will also play a part: the fiscal 2027 defence appropriations bill, negotiated while the Pentagon runs on a continuing resolution through December 11, will set the money available for repairs.
