Far-right activist Jake Lang stormed the Diwali: Lights of India festival at the Seattle Center Armory on Saturday, November 7, 2026, carrying placards that read "Deport All Dot Heads" and "Stop Hindu Replacement of Christians" in front of a stage where children were performing. Festival-goers confronted the protesters and physically removed them from the venue.

Video of the confrontation spread quickly on social media, drawing condemnation from elected officials and Hindu community groups across the United States. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Seattle in Congress, called the display "vile and racist".

What Happened

The Diwali: Lights of India festival was under way at the Seattle Center Armory on Saturday afternoon when Lang and Allen walked in carrying their placards. Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, is celebrated with music, dance, food and the lighting of lamps, and the Seattle event had drawn families with young children. The protesters positioned themselves in front of the stage as children performed, turning a family celebration into a confrontation.

Festival attendees did not wait for security to intervene. People in the crowd confronted the two men and physically removed them from the venue, according to reports of the incident. Video recorded by attendees shows the scuffle and the placards being carried out, and the clips were shared widely within hours.

Background and Context

Jake Lang is a far-right activist who heads an organisation called White Replacement. He took part in the attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, and spent four years in prison over his role in it. President Donald Trump pardoned him in January 2025, as part of the pardons issued to people convicted over the Capitol attack.

The Seattle protest did not come out of nowhere. Days earlier, 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis was arrested over alleged plans for a mass shooting at a Hindu temple near Chicago, alarming Hindu communities across the country. And just a day before the Seattle festival, President Trump marked Diwali at the White House with an Oval Office lamp-lighting ceremony, a tradition begun under President George W. Bush.

Seattle Diwali Festival: A Celebration Interrupted

The Seattle Diwali festival at the Seattle Center Armory is a fixture of the city's autumn calendar. The Armory, at the foot of the Space Needle, hosts cultural festivals through the year, and the Diwali event brings together dance troupes, musicians, food vendors and families marking the festival of lights, which symbolises the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.

It was in front of that stage that Lang and Allen placed themselves, holding placards aimed at the performers and the audience. Witnesses said the children kept dancing as the confrontation unfolded around them, and that the mood in the hall shifted in seconds from celebration to anger.

Reactions and Quotes

Representative Pramila Jayapal, a Democrat whose district includes Seattle, condemned the incident on X in the strongest terms. "I am beyond disgusted by this vile and racist display," she wrote. "Diwali is an important holiday and our community should feel safe to celebrate it. This hateful display has no place in our city or this country."

The Coalition of Hindus of North America, known as CoHNA, said the protest was part of a wider pattern. In its alert, the organisation called the Seattle episode "Hinduphobic bigotry on open display" and warned the activists had announced plans to target other Diwali celebrations.

Why It Matters

The Seattle incident matters because it shows how anti-Hindu rhetoric that circulates online is now being carried into public festivals in front of children. Diwali is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the United States, marked by millions of Indian Americans and by political leaders of both parties. When a family event at a civic centre becomes a target, it sends a message to every community planning a public celebration.

It also matters because of who carried it out. Lang is a pardoned January 6 participant who leads an organisation built around the idea of "white replacement", and his presence at a Diwali festival was a deliberate choice of target. The protest was a planned disruption of a religious and cultural celebration, announced and then publicised by the protesters themselves.

What Happens Next

Community organisations are on alert for further disruptions. CoHNA has warned that the activists announced plans to target other Diwali celebrations, and organisers of events in the coming days are expected to tighten security and coordinate more closely with police.

Whether Lang or Allen face any charges is not yet clear. No charges arising from the festival itself had been reported, and police have not said publicly whether they are investigating. The men were removed by attendees rather than arrested at the scene, and free-speech protections cover protests in public spaces.
