What Happened

Dallas made the difference with the man advantage. The Stars scored three times on five power-play chances, and Harley was at the heart of all of it, scoring the goal that settled the game and setting up two more. When San Jose pushed back, Dallas had an answer, and when the Sharks closed the gap, the Stars found a way to restore it.

San Jose refused to go away quietly. Will Smith scored and set one up, Michael Misa and Ivar Stenberg both found the net, and Celebrini was involved in all three Sharks goals. Yet every time the visitors clawed one back, Dallas responded. Nedeljkovic made 26 saves, but the Stars generated too much on the power play for San Jose to hold them off.

Background: A Fifth Straight Loss for San Jose

The defeat extended a miserable run for the Sharks, who have now lost five games in a row. The run has included heavy nights against some of the league's best teams. San Jose lost 4-1 to the Minnesota Wild on Friday, when Kirill Kaprizov produced a four-point night, and earlier in the week the Sharks were beaten 7-2 by the Los Angeles Kings, with Adrian Kempe scoring a hat trick. The Wild beat the Sharks 4-1 on Friday as Kaprizov starred, and the Kings routed San Jose 7-2 behind Kempe's hat trick. The Calgary Flames had also edged the Sharks 2-1 on Monday.

What will frustrate San Jose most is that Saturday's game was not a blowout. The Sharks scored three times, Celebrini set up all three goals, and Smith continued to produce. But the same problems keep showing up: too many penalties at the wrong moments, and a penalty kill that could not hold against a Dallas power play that was clicking. For Dallas, the win was built on a very different foundation, with Rantanen's two assists stretching his point streak to five games.

Stars Beat Sharks 4-3 Behind Harley's Power-Play Night

Harley was the story of the night. A defenceman scoring the winner and adding two assists is a big night on its own, but doing it all on the power play makes it something more: it means Harley was the player Dallas turned to whenever the game was there to be won. His goal settled the contest, his passing created two more, and his presence at the point kept San Jose's penalty killers guessing.

The support around him was just as important. Hintz scored and set one up, Benn and Robertson both found the net, and Johnston and Rantanen each picked up two assists. At the other end, Oettinger's 20 saves were exactly what the night required: steady when San Jose pressed, and enough to protect a lead built on the power play.

Reactions

No postgame quotes from players or coaches were carried in the wire reports checked for this game, so none are reproduced here. What the numbers say is clear enough: Dallas won the special-teams battle 3-for-5 on the power play, Harley produced three points from the blue line, and San Jose's three goals were not enough to end a losing run that has now reached five games.

Why It Matters

The result matters because of what it says about where these two teams are heading. Dallas showed that its power play can win a game on its own: three goals with the man advantage, a three-point night from its leading defenceman, and points spread across the top of the lineup. That is the profile of a team that can beat anyone when its special teams are clicking.

It matters for San Jose in the opposite way. Five straight defeats, including heavy losses to Minnesota and Los Angeles in the same week, is the kind of slide that can define a stretch of the season. The Sharks are producing — Celebrini's three assists and Smith's goal and assist show the young core is creating — but they are giving up too much, and too often with a man in the box.

What Happens Next

Dallas will look to carry the power-play form into its next games, knowing that a 3-for-5 night with the man advantage is a weapon few teams can match. The challenge now is consistency: producing nights like Saturday's on a regular basis.

San Jose faces a more urgent task. The Sharks are five games into a losing run, and the next game is a chance to reset with a cleaner, more disciplined performance. A sixth straight loss would turn a slide into a slump, and that is the outcome the Sharks will be desperate to avoid.
