Carlos Alcaraz filled one of the last remaining gaps on his glittering CV on Sunday, beating Ben Shelton 7-6 (5), 7-5 to win the Paris Masters for the first time and collect his ninth ATP Masters 1000 title. The 23-year-old Spaniard, the world No. 3 and second seed, needed one hour and 59 minutes to see off the third-seeded American at the Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, sealing victory on his second match point with a two-handed backhand winner down the line. Alcaraz threw his arms wide in celebration, cracked a broad smile and briefly appeared to cry. It was his fifth title of 2026, the 29th of his career and his second in as many weeks, after Vienna last Sunday.

• The 23-year-old saved six break points, avenged his US Open quarter-final defeat to Shelton, and now leads their head-to-head 4-1.
• Alcaraz is the first Spaniard to win the Paris tournament since 2012 and only the third man to win Masters 1000 titles in five consecutive years, after Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

What Happened

The final was tight from the first ball, with neither man giving an inch on serve in a first set that stayed on serve all the way to a tiebreak. Alcaraz saved six break points in the opening set, held his nerve every time Shelton threatened, and took the tiebreak 7-5 to move ahead.

Shelton refused to fade. The 24-year-old American broke serve in the second set and looked ready to force a decider, but Alcaraz broke straight back to restore parity. From there the Spaniard took over, closing out the match 7-5 on his second match point with a two-handed backhand winner down the line.

Alcaraz threw his arms out wide, smiled broadly and briefly appeared to cry as he soaked in the applause. He then made a point of walking around the net to hug Shelton and pat him on the chest, a warm exchange between two of the sport's brightest young stars.

Shelton, who was seeking the eighth title of his career and a third Masters 1000 crown after twice winning in Montreal, leaves Paris with his reputation enhanced even in defeat. He pushed the world No. 3 hard in both sets and confirmed his place among the game's elite.

Background and Context

Alcaraz's Paris triumph caps a remarkable late-season surge. The seven-time Grand Slam champion only returned from a right wrist injury in late August, yet he won the Japan Open last month and swept Vienna without dropping a set. Paris was harder work: he almost went out on Friday, saving two match points against Taylor Fritz in their quarter-final before finding a way through.

Sunday's final also carried a score to settle. Two months ago Shelton beat Alcaraz in a late-night US Open quarter-final marathon that ended at 3:33 a.m. Shelton went on to reach the New York final, where he lost to Alexander Zverev. In Paris, Alcaraz got his revenge, extending his head-to-head lead to 4-1.

There was an extra layer of intrigue on the sidelines. Shelton recently added Juan Carlos Ferrero to his coaching staff, following Alcaraz's split with his long-time coach Ferrero last year. Any awkwardness was invisible on Sunday, and the embrace at the net after match point spoke of the respect between them.

Carlos Alcaraz's Paris Masters Triumph

The Paris title is Alcaraz's ninth at Masters 1000 level, and it makes him only the third man in history to win Masters 1000 titles in five consecutive years, after Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. He is also the first Spaniard to win the Paris tournament since 2012, ending a 14-year wait for Spanish success at the event.

It is his fifth tour title of 2026 and the 29th of his career, remarkable figures for a player still only 23 years old. The Vienna and Paris double, so soon after his return from injury, shows a player peaking at exactly the right time.

Reactions

The loudest reaction came from the Plenitude Arena crowd, which rose to Alcaraz as he celebrated with his arms spread wide after the final backhand winner. The Spaniard's smile and brief tears captured a player who had conquered one of the few big tournaments that had eluded him.

The sportsmanship between the two finalists drew praise too. Alcaraz's decision to walk around the net to hug Shelton and pat him on the chest, after both men had applauded each other's best shots during the match, was a reminder of the warmth in a rivalry that is set to shape men's tennis for years. Shelton leaves Paris a Masters finalist and ATP Finals qualifier, his breakthrough season firmly on track.

Why It Matters

Alcaraz's Paris title matters because it removes one of the last question marks from his resume and confirms his status as the dominant force of the season's closing stretch. Winning Masters 1000 titles in five consecutive years puts him in company with only Djokovic and Nadal.

It also sets up a fascinating finish to the year. Alcaraz arrives in Turin as the form player on tour, while Shelton's run to the Paris final shows the gap between the game's best young players is narrowing fast. Their rivalry, now 4-1 in Alcaraz's favour, is fast becoming one of the defining match-ups in men's tennis.

What Happens Next

Both men now travel to Turin for the season-ending ATP Finals, which run from November 15 to 22. Alcaraz will be among the favourites for the title after his Vienna and Paris double, while Shelton arrives full of confidence after reaching his first Paris Masters final. A third meeting this season is a real possibility if both come through their groups.

For Alcaraz, the goal in Turin is simple: end a season of five titles with the biggest prize of the indoor season.
