President Donald Trump's endorsement, long treated as the gold standard in Republican politics, did not deliver in the 2026 midterm elections. A USA TODAY analysis of races decided by 9 a.m. ET on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, found that Trump flipped no seats from Democrat to Republican, while dozens of candidates he backed lost in governor, Senate and House contests. The results arrived alongside Democrats winning control of both chambers of Congress, and they raise a blunt question for Republicans: does the president's backing still help in a general election, or has it become a liability?

Key Points

• Trump flipped no seats from Democrat to Republican among races decided by 9 a.m. ET on November 4, 2026.
• Of 22 gubernatorial endorsements, 10 won, 11 lost and Alaska was undecided; Democrats flipped Republican-held seats in Georgia, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio and Texas.
• Of 24 Senate endorsements, 13 won, nine lost and Alaska and Mississippi were undecided, including six Democratic wins over Republican seats.
• In the House, 40 of 234 Trump endorsements lost and 66 contests were unresolved; Democrats flipped at least 23 Republican seats where he endorsed their opponents.
• None of his 27 endorsements for Democrat-held House seats had flipped a seat by early November 4.

What Happened

USA TODAY tallied the president's endorsed candidates across the three main levels of the ballot as results settled on Wednesday morning. The headline finding was stark: no Democratic-held seat had changed hands to a Trump-backed Republican. In governor's races, the split was 10 wins, 11 losses and one undecided contest in Alaska. Democrats flipped Republican-held governor's seats in Georgia, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio and Texas, undercutting the idea that Trump's backing could protect incumbents or open new territory.

The Senate picture was similar. Thirteen Trump-endorsed Senate candidates won, nine lost, and races in Alaska and Mississippi remained undecided. Six losses were Democratic victories over Republican-held seats, in Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas. Those flips helped deliver Democrats a Senate majority, turning a Republican chamber into one the White House must now negotiate with rather than direct.

The House told the same story at larger scale. Forty of the 234 candidates Trump endorsed had already lost, and 66 contests were still unresolved. Democrats had flipped at least 23 Republican-held seats where Trump endorsed the Republican candidate's opponent, while none of the 27 Trump endorsements aimed at Democrat-held seats had succeeded. With dozens of races still to be called, the final House endorsement record could look worse still. Trump responded on Fox News by pointing to his rally crowds: "If I'm not on the ballot, they wouldn't go."

Background and Context

The 2026 midterms were different. They were widely read as a referendum on Trump's second term, fought against frustration over the cost of living, tariffs and the war with Iran, which had sent prices soaring. Voters who turned out in large numbers delivered Democrats control of the House and Senate, and the endorsement tally suggests that, in many places, the president's backing was not enough to overcome that national mood, and may in some races have tied candidates to it.

Marc Short, who served as chief of staff to Trump's first vice president, Mike Pence, put the White House's involvement in stark terms. "Never has a president been more involved in selecting a party's primary and general election candidates," Short said. "It's hard for me to think of a White House that has done more to sabotage their own fellow members than this one has." The comment, from a former insider, captured criticism now voiced more openly inside the party: that heavy-handed intervention in primaries produced nominees who struggled in general elections.

Trump Endorsements in the 2026 Midterms

The numbers behind the Trump endorsements in the 2026 midterms show weakness in both defence and attack. On defence, the president could not hold Republican seats where Democrats mounted strong challenges, from governor's mansions in the South and Midwest to Senate seats in Kansas, South Carolina and Texas. On attack, the record was worse: not a single Democrat-held seat flipped to a Trump-backed candidate in the governor, Senate or House tallies available by Wednesday morning.

That pattern matters because endorsements are supposed to do two jobs at once: protect the party's own seats and win the other side's. In 2026, the early count showed neither job being done reliably. The 66 unresolved House races leave room for the picture to change at the margins, but they would need to break overwhelmingly in Republicans' favour to rescue the overall record. In Texas, where Democrats ended 30 years without a statewide win, Trump-backed candidates lost ground rather than holding the line.

Reactions and Quotes

Short's criticism went further, directly linking the White House's candidate selection to the losses. Other Republicans, as reported separately after the midterms, have blamed the president's unpopular policies, his focus on the Iran war and Washington construction projects, and his low approval rating. Democrats, meanwhile, have treated the endorsement record as confirmation of their central midterm argument: that voters rejected the direction of Trump's second term. With control of both chambers from January 2027, they can pass legislation, launch investigations and block appointments, even though Trump retains the veto.

Why It Matters

The fading power of the Trump endorsement matters far beyond one election night. If Republican candidates and donors conclude that it no longer helps in competitive general elections, the dynamics of the next primary season will change. Candidates may still seek it to win a primary, but they may also weigh whether it becomes a liability in November, particularly in swing states and districts.

What Happens Next

The immediate next step is completing the count. Sixty-six House races were unresolved when USA TODAY published its analysis, along with the Alaska governor's race and Senate races in Alaska and Mississippi. Those results will finalise the endorsement record and determine the exact size of the Democratic House and Senate majorities.
