Washington — House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has said that impeaching President Donald Trump is not a priority for House Democrats, a day after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Jeffries said no member of his caucus had raised the subject with him, and he made clear that the new majority's immediate focus lies elsewhere. His remarks set an early marker for how Democrats intend to use the power voters handed them, drawing a sharp line between investigating the administration and moving to remove the president himself.

Jeffries also revealed that Trump has not spoken to him or to Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer since the election. That silence, at a moment when the two parties would normally begin negotiating the transfer of legislative power, underlines how distant the relationship between the White House and the incoming Democratic leadership remains. Jeffries is expected to become speaker of the House when the new Congress convenes on January 3, 2027, a post that would make him the first Black speaker in American history.

• Trump was impeached twice by the House in his first term but was never convicted in the Senate.

What Happened

Jeffries spoke to reporters on Wednesday, a day after an election night that reshaped Washington. Democrats won both the House and the Senate, ending Republican control of Congress and giving Jeffries a clear path to the speakership. Against that backdrop, the question put to him was direct: would the new Democratic majority move to impeach Trump, who has already been impeached twice before? His answer was equally direct. Jeffries said impeachment of the president himself is not something House Democrats are prioritising, adding: "I haven't had a single member of the House Democratic Caucus talk to me about impeachment."

Background/Context

Trump's history with impeachment is central to why the question carries so much weight. He was impeached twice by the House during his first term: first in 2019 over his dealings with Ukraine, and again in 2021 after the January 6 attack on the Capitol. On both occasions the Senate acquitted him, and he returned to office after winning the 2024 presidential election. Any third impeachment would be without precedent, and it would face the same hurdle that stopped the first two: conviction in the Senate requires two-thirds of senators, a threshold Democrats do not hold even after their midterm gains.

Jeffries, Trump Impeachment and the New House Majority

The phrase "not a priority" is doing a lot of work in Jeffries's statement. It does not rule out impeachment for all time, and it does not say Democrats would refuse to consider it if new evidence emerged. What it does say is that, as of the day after the election, impeachment of Trump is not where the new majority intends to spend its political capital. That framing gives Jeffries room to manoeuvre: he can keep the focus on legislation and oversight, while leaving open a different course if circumstances change.

Reactions/Quotes

The most important reaction so far is Jeffries's own, and it is worth quoting in full context. Asked about impeachment, he said: "I haven't had a single member of the House Democratic Caucus talk to me about impeachment." On contact with the president, he said: "I have not heard from President Trump. It's my understanding that Leader Schumer has not heard from President Trump." Together, those two sentences define the current position: no internal push for a presidential impeachment, and no direct line yet opened between the White House and the incoming Democratic leadership.

Why It Matters

The decision matters because impeachment is not just a legal process; it is a political signal. A move to impeach Trump a third time would dominate headlines, consume the House calendar and define the new Congress in the public mind. By saying it is not a priority, Jeffries is trying to define the new Congress differently: as a majority focused on lowering costs, protecting health care and holding the administration to account through regular oversight, rather than as a majority defined by a single, dramatic confrontation with the president.

What Happens Next

The immediate next step is the lame-duck session, in which the outgoing Republican House will handle pending business before the new Congress takes office on January 3, 2027. During that period, impeachment resolutions against officials such as Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth may still be forced to a vote, and Democrats will watch closely how those votes play out. Jeffries's comments do not affect that session directly, but they set expectations for what follows it.

Once the new Congress convenes, Jeffries is expected to be elected speaker, and the House will set its early calendar around costs, health care and oversight. Impeachment of the president is not, on his current account, among them, though that could change if new findings emerge. The other question is simpler: will Trump call? A call would be the first sign of whether divided government will be negotiated or fought out in public.
