The White House has set December 14, 2026, for a hearing into mortgage-fraud allegations against Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, November 4, citing an unnamed White House official. The Lisa Cook hearing is the next step in President Donald Trump's more than year-long effort to remove her from the central bank.

Cook denies any wrongdoing. Her lawyer did not respond to Reuters' request for comment on the date. He had previously questioned the process's fairness and sought details before agreeing to a date. A three-person committee formed by Trump will hold it and recommend whether she should be fired.

Key Points

• December 14, 2026, is the date set for the mortgage-fraud hearing against Fed Governor Lisa Cook, per the New York Times.
• Cook denies wrongdoing. Her lawyer, Abbe Lowell, questioned the process's fairness and sought details before agreeing to a date.
• The Supreme Court ruled in June 2026 that Trump cannot fire a Fed governor "at will", but may do so after giving her a chance to defend herself.
• Kevin Hassett, Trump's top economic aide, sits on the three-person committee that will hold the hearing and recommend whether Cook should be removed.
• No president has ever removed a sitting Fed governor, so the outcome could set a precedent for central-bank independence.

What Happened

The New York Times report, citing an unnamed White House official, is the first specific date to emerge for a hearing expected for weeks. Reuters, which reported the Times account, noted that the White House did not immediately confirm the date publicly and that Cook's lawyer did not respond to its request for comment.

The timing resolves a scheduling dispute. Lowell told the White House last month that Cook would not be available for its initially announced November 5 date and could not attend until after the Fed's December 8-9 policy-setting meeting. A December 14 hearing falls just days after that meeting. It clears Lowell's obstacle while keeping the process moving before year's end.

Hassett told Bloomberg TV last week that Cook's lawyers had agreed to a December date for what he called a fair hearing. The White House has not publicly released the hearing's detailed procedures. Lowell's earlier letters had pressed for that information before any date was agreed.

Background: The Year-Long Fight Over Lisa Cook

Trump has been trying to fire Cook for more than a year, in an unprecedented attempt to control the Federal Reserve. The effort centres on allegations that Cook made false statements on mortgage documents. She firmly denies the claims. Her lawyers have described at least one disputed designation as an inadvertent mistake, and no criminal charge has been brought against her.

Cook, appointed to the Fed's Board of Governors in 2022, is the first Black woman to serve as a Fed governor, and her term runs to 2038. Governors are traditionally understood to serve fixed terms insulated from presidential dismissal except for cause. That insulation is the heart of the dispute.

In June 2026, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump cannot fire a Fed governor "at will" but may do so if he gives her a chance to defend herself. That ruling turned the fight from a dismissal notice into a hearing process. The December 14 hearing is that process, as the White House has designed it. See our earlier report on the hearing's delay to December.

Lisa Cook December 14 Hearing: What the Date Means

Fixing a date does not settle the fight; it starts its next phase. After the hearing, the committee will recommend whether Trump should fire Cook, and he will make the final decision. Her lawyers are widely expected to challenge any dismissal in court. What counts as sufficient cause and a fair process remains open, so the procedures and evidence will be scrutinised.

The date also sits in a crowded December calendar. The Federal Open Market Committee meets on December 8-9 to set interest rates, with officials divided over another rise amid persistent inflation. Cook has previously dissented in favour of tighter policy. Whatever the committee decides, the hearing days later will keep the Fed's leadership in the spotlight: see our coverage of the Fed's October rate decision.

Reactions and Quotes

Cook's legal team has framed the removal effort as an attack on the Fed's independence, not a routine personnel matter. Lowell questioned the hearing's fairness and sought information about the process before agreeing to a date, a stance that delayed the original November 5 plan. The White House has presented the hearing as the fair process the Supreme Court required. Hassett told Bloomberg TV last week that Cook's lawyers had agreed to a December date for what he called a fair hearing.

Neither the White House nor Cook's team commented to Reuters on the specific December 14 date. Details such as whether the hearing will be public and what evidence will be presented remain unclear. The stakes go beyond one governor's mortgage paperwork: they concern how much control a president can exercise over the Fed.

Why It Matters

Federal Reserve independence is one of the foundations of US economic policy. Central banks are insulated from politics so rate decisions rest on evidence, not electoral timing. Critics argue that if a president can remove a governor over disputed allegations through a process her lawyers consider unfair, every future governor will face pressure to align with the White House. Supporters counter that a hearing is the accountability mechanism the law provides.

Markets will also be watching. Uncertainty over the board's composition can move bond yields and the dollar. See also our report on new guardrails for the Federal Reserve after the midterm elections.

What Happens Next

The calendar is now clear: the Fed's policy meeting on December 8-9, followed by Cook's hearing on December 14. After the hearing, the three-person committee will recommend whether Trump should fire her. If he does, Cook is expected to challenge the dismissal in court, potentially returning the case to the Supreme Court.

Until then, Cook remains a sitting governor. The December 14 date gives both sides weeks to prepare: the White House to assemble its case, and Cook's lawyers to test the fairness of a process they have already questioned. The outcome will shape the balance between presidential power and central-bank independence for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does President Trump want to fire Lisa Cook?

Alleged false statements on mortgage documents, which she denies; her lawyers call a disputed designation an inadvertent mistake, and no charge has been brought.

What did the Supreme Court rule in June 2026?

It ruled that Trump cannot fire a Fed governor "at will" but may do so if he gives her a chance to defend herself. That is why the administration is holding a formal hearing before deciding on removal.

What happens at the December 14 hearing?

A three-person Trump committee, including Kevin Hassett, hears the allegations and her defence, then recommends on firing. Trump decides.

Has a president ever fired a Federal Reserve governor before?

No. No president has ever removed a sitting Fed governor, which is why this case could set a precedent for the central bank's independence.
