Canva layoffs will affect 1,271 people — about 22 per cent of the Australian design platform's global workforce — after growth slowed for the first time in a decade. Co-founder and chief executive Melanie Perkins told staff on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, that the company must "refound" itself, calling the decision "the hardest moment in our 13-year history". The restructure merges product, growth and platform teams into one product organisation, cuts management layers and makes Sydney the main base for more product teams.

Key Points

• The restructure affects 1,271 people, about 22% of Canva's workforce of more than 5,700 across 37 countries. The figure covers job cuts, role changes and relocations — Canva has not said how many will lose their jobs outright.
• Perkins said growth had slowed for the first time in a decade and the company must "refound" itself.
• Product, growth and platform teams will merge into a single product organisation with fewer management layers, and Sydney will become the main base for more product teams.
• Most hybrid staff will be expected in the office two to three days a week from January 2027.
• Departing staff get at least six months' salary including entitlements, a year of healthcare where offered, keep their MacBooks, a year of LinkedIn Premium and access to $10,000 Canva Collective Fund grants.

What Happened

Canva announced the restructure on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, in a memo from Perkins to staff. The 1,271 people affected represent roughly one in five of the company's employees, making it the largest workforce shake-up in Canva's 13-year history. The company said the changes were needed because growth had slowed for the first time in a decade.

Perkins did not say how many of the 1,271 will leave altogether and how many will move into different roles or locations. The headline figure covers job cuts, role changes and relocations together, so the number of outright redundancies is still unclear, and Canva has not given a country-by-country breakdown.

Background and Context

Canva was founded in 2013 and has grown over 13 years from an Australian start-up into one of the world's best-known design platforms, used by individuals, small businesses and large companies to make presentations, social media graphics, documents and videos. Its workforce of more than 5,700 people is spread across 37 countries, reflecting a decade of rapid international expansion.

That growth story has cooled. Perkins' memo acknowledged that growth had slowed for the first time in a decade — a blunt admission from a founder who has long presented Canva as a company still in its fast-growth phase. The slowdown comes as the wider technology industry faces tougher conditions, with several large firms cutting staff in 2026 as investors demand clearer paths to profit. Canva's valuation has also come under pressure: its largest venture backer, Blackbird, cut it by 17 per cent to $34.9 billion in August 2026.

Canva Layoffs and the AI Shift Reshaping Design Work

Perkins' memo did not name artificial intelligence as a reason for the restructure, but it pointed to "new technology" changing how people create — a clear reference to the AI tools now reshaping design work. ABC News reported that the restructure sets Canva up to build AI-related products, suggesting the company wants to redirect resources towards AI features rather than simply shrink.

The pattern is familiar across technology in 2026: firms cut roles in some areas while investing heavily in AI. CrowdStrike, for example, has moved to buy AI security start-ups to extend its platform into securing AI agents. For Canva, whose core product makes design accessible to non-designers, AI tools that generate layouts, images and text are both an opportunity and a threat.

Reactions and Quotes

Perkins' memo set the tone for the announcement. She told staff it was "the hardest moment in our 13-year history" and said the company must "refound" itself — language that framed the cuts as a reset rather than a temporary cost-saving exercise. She also said growth had slowed for the first time in a decade, the clearest public acknowledgement yet that Canva's long run of rapid expansion has ended.

ABC News reported that the restructure positions Canva to build AI-related products, linking the shake-up to the company's technology plans rather than to a short-term downturn alone. For affected staff, the support package is unusually generous: at least six months' salary including entitlements, a year of healthcare where offered, keeping their MacBooks, a year of LinkedIn Premium and access to $10,000 grants.

Why It Matters

A cut affecting 22 per cent of a workforce is large by any measure, and it sends a signal well beyond Canva itself. The company is one of Australia's most prominent technology success stories, and its decision to retrench and concentrate product work in Sydney will be watched closely by the country's start-up sector. If Canva is slowing down, smaller Australian tech firms may face even harder choices.

The restructure also reflects a broader shift in technology in 2026: rapid hiring and remote-first working are giving way to smaller teams, more office days and sharper focus on AI. US voters have even pushed back against the physical footprint of that AI boom, rejecting data centre projects in local ballots across 10 states — a reminder that the industry's expansion faces political as well as economic headwinds.

What Happens Next

Canva will now work through the restructure with affected staff, including consultations, role changes and relocations, and the merged product organisation will take shape over the coming months. The new office attendance expectation — two to three days a week for most hybrid staff — begins in January 2027. The key numbers to watch are how many of the 1,271 leave outright and whether Canva announces new AI products in the months ahead.
