Florida is fighting its largest dengue fever outbreak in decades. State health officials have confirmed 485 locally acquired cases of dengue fever in Florida in 2026, with the Tampa Bay area accounting for roughly 95 percent of them. The Florida dengue outbreak has already forced three counties to declare local emergencies and sent mosquito-control crews into the streets with ground and aerial spraying, putting residents across the Gulf Coast on alert for a virus most Americans still think of as a tropical problem happening somewhere else.

The numbers show an outbreak that built quietly and then accelerated. Between October 18 and October 24, state surveillance logged 60 new infections in a single week. The locally acquired infections are separate from more than 300 travel-associated dengue cases reported in Florida this year, meaning the virus is now spreading between people and mosquitoes inside the state, not just arriving with returning travellers.

Key Points

• Florida has confirmed 485 locally acquired dengue fever cases in 2026, its largest outbreak in decades.
• The Tampa Bay area accounts for roughly 95 percent of all locally acquired cases statewide.
• State surveillance logged 60 new infections in the week of October 18 to 24, 2026.
• Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties declared emergencies in late September; Hillsborough has extended its declaration.
• More than 300 additional travel-associated dengue cases have been reported in Florida this year.

What Happened

Florida's dengue tally climbed steadily through the summer and into the autumn, driven by the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes that carry the virus. According to the Florida Department of Health, the Tampa Bay region has become the centre of the outbreak, with about 95 percent of the state's locally acquired cases concentrated there. The 60 new infections recorded in the week of October 18 to 24 show transmission was still active well into the autumn.

County leaders moved first. Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties issued emergency declarations in late September, a step that lets local governments buy supplies and hire spraying crews faster and claim state and federal reimbursement. Hillsborough County has since extended its state of local emergency amid ongoing transmission.

Dengue is a viral illness spread mainly through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. It can cause fever, severe muscle and joint pain, nausea and rash, and in severe cases dangerous complications or death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Background: Dengue in Florida

Dengue has been a recurring visitor to Florida for years, but never on this scale in recent memory. The state typically records a handful of locally acquired cases each year, usually in South Florida, alongside hundreds of cases among travellers returning from the Caribbean and Latin America, where dengue is endemic. The 2026 total of 485 locally acquired infections dwarfs those earlier years and marks a shift from isolated clusters to sustained local transmission in a new part of the state.

Several forces have pushed the numbers up. Aedes mosquitoes are container breeders, needing as little as a tablespoon of standing water to lay eggs, and Florida's warm, wet climate gives them endless breeding sites in birdbaths, gutters, planters, discarded tyres and outdoor containers.

Florida Dengue Outbreak: How Tampa Bay Became the Epicentre

The concentration of cases in Tampa Bay is no accident. The region combines dense suburban housing, abundant standing water, and a climate that keeps Aedes mosquitoes biting for much of the year. Mosquito-control districts in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties have been spraying from trucks and aircraft, inspecting properties, and treating standing water.

That is why officials have put so much emphasis on what people do in their own yards. Public health guidance urges residents to inspect their properties weekly and drain or cover birdbaths, gutters, planters, discarded tyres and outdoor containers.

Reactions and Quotes

Entomologists say the behaviour of the Aedes mosquito is what makes this outbreak so hard to contain. “The Aedes mosquitoes that can transmit dengue are active during the day and thrive in warm, humid environments like those found in Florida,” a spokesperson for the SC Johnson Center for Insect Science and Family Health previously told Fox News Digital. The same spokesperson added: “Staying aware of local mosquito activity and consistently protecting against bites are important steps people can take to help reduce their risk.”

The message from mosquito-control officials has been consistent: spraying alone cannot end the outbreak. Abatement teams are stepping up ground spraying, aerial applications and property inspections, the rest depends on residents emptying the water where mosquitoes breed, week after week, until transmission breaks.

Why It Matters

The Florida dengue outbreak matters because it shows how quickly a disease once treated as a foreign problem can become a local one. With 485 locally acquired cases, Florida is no longer dealing with a few imported infections; it is dealing with a virus circulating in its own communities, in one of the most populous parts of the state. That changes the calculation for residents, for health departments, and for the tourists who visit Tampa Bay in large numbers.

It also matters because dengue is not a one-time illness. There are four types of the dengue virus, and a second infection with a different type carries a higher risk of severe disease.

What Happens Next

Health officials will be watching the weekly case counts closely. If the 60-case week in late October proves to be a peak, cooler weather and continued spraying could push transmission down through November.

Residents can expect to see more mosquito-control trucks and aircraft in the Tampa Bay area in the coming weeks, along with public warnings to drain standing water and use repellent. For now, the advice is simple and repetitive, because it works: empty standing water every week, use repellent, cover up outdoors, and seek medical care quickly if a fever follows a mosquito bite.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many dengue cases has Florida confirmed in 2026?
Florida has confirmed 485 locally acquired dengue cases in 2026, its largest outbreak in decades, plus more than 300 travel-associated cases.

Where are most of the cases?
The Tampa Bay area accounts for roughly 95 percent of all locally acquired cases, concentrated in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties.

How is dengue spread?
Dengue is spread mainly through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquito. It is not spread directly from person to person.

What are the symptoms of dengue?
Symptoms usually appear four to ten days after an infectious bite and can include fever, severe muscle and joint pain, nausea and rash. Most people recover within two weeks, but severe dengue needs emergency care.

How can I protect myself from dengue in Florida?
Use EPA-registered repellent, wear long sleeves outdoors, and drain standing water around your home weekly.
