The Pentagon has delivered more than 25,000 drones and counter-drone systems to American forces in the Middle East during 2026, a massive surge in unmanned firepower announced on Wednesday as the eight-month war with Iran grinds on. The deliveries, worth $782 million, include more than 1,300 one-way attack drones, over 100 unmanned boats and underwater vessels, and more than 24,000 counter-drone systems to defend US troops against hostile drone attacks.

Key Points

• The Pentagon announced on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, that it has delivered more than 25,000 unmanned systems and counter-drone capabilities to US Central Command (CENTCOM) during 2026, following a $782 million investment.
• The deliveries include more than 1,300 one-way attack drones, over 100 unmanned surface and underwater vessels, and more than 24,000 counter-drone systems to protect US forces.
• The capabilities were delivered through the Direct Reporting Portfolio Manager for Unmanned Systems (DRPM-UxS), with counter-drone operations supported by Joint Interagency Task Force 401.
• The push is part of the Pentagon's wider drone-dominance effort and Project Agincourt, launched in September 2026, which is preparing a new Autonomous Warfare Command expected to become operational by October 1, 2027.
• The department said it has invested more than $6 billion in unmanned systems over the past year and that deliveries to CENTCOM will continue, amid the US-Iran war that began on February 28, 2026.

What Happened

The Pentagon, now formally known as the Department of War, announced on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, that it has completed a large-scale delivery of unmanned systems to US Central Command, the combatant command responsible for American military operations across the Middle East. The announcement described the deliveries as a massive surge, covering more than 25,000 individual systems and capabilities provided over the course of 2026.

The breakdown shows where the Pentagon's priorities lie. The largest share by far is defensive: more than 24,000 counter-unmanned aerial systems, designed to detect, jam or destroy hostile drones before they can strike American bases, ships and troops. On the offensive side, the department delivered more than 1,300 one-way attack drones, the kind of expendable aircraft that can be flown directly into a target, and over 100 unmanned surface and underwater vessels for operations at sea.

Background and Context

The surge did not happen in a vacuum. The United States and Iran have been at war since February 28, 2026, and the conflict has now entered its ninth month. Iranian drone attacks on US forces in the region have been a recurring feature of the fighting, and the threat from cheap, mass-produced drones has become one of the most pressing problems facing American commanders in the Middle East.

The Pentagon's response has been organisational as well as material. The capabilities were delivered through the Direct Reporting Portfolio Manager for Unmanned Systems, known as DRPM-UxS, a dedicated office set up to move drone technology from development to the front line faster than the Pentagon's normal procurement system allows. Counter-drone operations in the region are supported by Joint Interagency Task Force 401, which coordinates the effort across military and civilian agencies.

Pentagon Drone Surge: Project Agincourt and the Autonomous Warfare Command

The deliveries are part of a broader programme called Project Agincourt, launched in September 2026, which aims to prepare the US military for a future in which autonomous systems fight alongside, and in some cases instead of, human troops. The project is building towards a new Autonomous Warfare Command, which the Pentagon expects to become operational by October 1, 2027.

The Pentagon said deliveries to CENTCOM will continue, suggesting the surge announced on Wednesday is not a one-off shipment but the start of a sustained flow of unmanned systems into the region for as long as the conflict lasts.

Reactions and Quotes

The Pentagon presented the announcement as evidence that its drone-dominance effort is delivering results on the battlefield rather than remaining a plan on paper. The department emphasised the scale of the deliveries and the speed with which they reached US forces, pointing to the new procurement structures as the reason the systems arrived in months rather than years.

No detailed breakdown of where individual systems have been deployed was released, and the Pentagon did not say how many of the delivered systems have already been used in combat. The announcement also did not include any direct comment from CENTCOM commanders about the effect the systems have had on operations.

Why It Matters

The surge matters because it shows how the character of the US-Iran war is changing. The conflict has become a contest of unmanned systems as much as of manned aircraft and ships, and the side that can field and defend against drones at scale has a decisive advantage. By flooding the region with more than 24,000 counter-drone systems, the Pentagon is trying to take away one of Iran's most cost-effective weapons.

For US troops in the Middle East, the practical effect is more immediate. Better counter-drone defences mean safer bases, and more attack drones mean more options for striking back without putting pilots at risk. In a war that has already lasted eight months, that protection and flexibility could prove decisive.

What Happens Next

Deliveries to CENTCOM will continue, according to the Pentagon, and the focus will now shift to the next stage of Project Agincourt: standing up the Autonomous Warfare Command by October 1, 2027. That command will be expected to integrate unmanned systems across the services, from the one-way attack drones now in the Middle East to the unmanned vessels operating in the Gulf.

The wider war will also shape what comes next. The Pentagon's drone push is happening alongside diplomatic efforts to end the fighting, and a settlement would change the urgency of the buildup. For now, though, the message from Wednesday's announcement is clear: the United States is betting heavily on drones, and it is not slowing down.

Frequently Asked Questions
