WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump warned on Thursday that he may have to “destroy the rest” of Iran, telling reporters in the Oval Office that a decision on whether to widen the nine-month war is coming soon — and that the world will know “soon enough.”

The warning came after Trump’s first meeting with his top national security advisers on Iran since Election Day, held as part of his weekly intelligence briefing, according to two United States officials cited by Axios. “I would rather not destroy the rest of the country if possible, but maybe I’ll have to,” Trump said. He added that the United States is “building more weapons right now in our military than we’ve ever built before” and is “very much locked and loaded.”

• Trump said on Thursday, November 5, 2026, that a decision on widening the war on Iran is coming soon, warning he may have to “destroy the rest” of the country.
• The remarks followed his first meeting with top national security advisers on Iran since Election Day, during his weekly intelligence briefing, according to two United States officials cited by Axios.

• Trump acknowledged that 18 United States service members have died in the conflict, now in its ninth month.
• Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called mediators from six countries, and security chief Mohsen Rezaei met Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

What Happened

Trump spoke in the Oval Office on Thursday, November 5, 2026, shortly after meeting his senior national security team — his first such session on Iran since Tuesday’s midterm elections, when Democrats swept both the House and the Senate. According to two United States officials cited by Axios, the meeting was part of his weekly intelligence briefing. He announced no decision, only that one is imminent.

Trump also set out the condition he says will decide the matter. Iran cannot do anything on its nuclear programme “without our approval,” he said, and the United States would decide whether to go further and “certify” that Iran can never rebuild its nuclear capability. He said it would take Iran 25 years to rebuild what American strikes have already destroyed — a claim Tehran disputes.

The remarks came two days after voters handed Democrats control of both chambers of Congress, a result Trump himself has linked to the war and rising fuel prices.

Background and Context

The war between the United States, Israel and Iran has run for more than eight months. American and Israeli strikes have hit Iranian nuclear sites, air defences and military targets, while Iran has answered with missile and drone attacks and strikes on shipping and tankers in the Gulf.

Diplomacy has run in parallel with the fighting. Vice President JD Vance said on Monday, November 2, that Washington had made “progress” in talks with Iran and set “no strict deadline” for a deal. On Wednesday, November 4, Trump said there had been “very good talks over the last 24 hours” and the war could be “over quickly” if Tehran accepted a deal. Iranian officials have pushed back on the reported terms, and the fighting has not stopped: American forces struck Iran’s Qeshm Island this week, and United States and Iranian representatives met in Geneva, Switzerland.

Trump’s Iran Warning: “Destroy the Rest”

The phrase “destroy the rest” was the sharpest part of Thursday’s remarks, and it was deliberate. Trump has escalated his language all week — on Wednesday he warned of a “heavy hit” and “something large” — but Thursday’s formulation went further, implying that what has already been destroyed is only part of the job.

His claim that Iran would need 25 years to rebuild its nuclear programme is part of his argument that American strikes destroyed it, and the only question is whether Washington will allow it to be rebuilt. His insistence that Iran can do nothing “without our approval” turns that claim into a demand: accept American supervision, or face more strikes. He set no public deadline.

Reactions and Quotes

Iran moved quickly to shore up its position. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held calls with mediators from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Egypt. Iran’s security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, travelled to Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In Washington, senior House Democrats outlined plans to force votes to end the war, with Representative Gregory Meeks promising resolutions to terminate the conflict and Democratic Whip Katherine Clark questioning its goals and exit strategy. Representative Ro Khanna has vowed to file a bill cutting off funding for the Iran war once Democrats take control of the House in January.

Why It Matters

Thursday’s warning comes at a hinge point. The diplomatic track is alive — talks in Geneva, proposals moving through Qatar, mediators in constant contact — but the military track is being readied in public. The deployment of a second American aircraft carrier toward the Middle East, the USS Gerald R. Ford, gives the threat weight: the United States will soon have two carrier strike groups near Iran. Democrats, who oppose the war, take both chambers in January, and Trump has about two months until then. A wider war would also put more pressure on the Strait of Hormuz and on oil prices, which have already begun to rebound on the tanker attacks.

What Happens Next

The decision Trump promised is now the central question in Washington. He gave no date, and his advisers have not filled in the gap. The coming days will show whether the warning was a negotiating tactic — pressure on Tehran to accept a deal — or the prelude to a new round of strikes. In Congress, the countdown is under way: Democrats take control in January, promising votes to end the war and legislation to cut off its funding.
