Kyiv, Ukraine — A Russian missile attack on Ukraine wounded at least nine people, including a child, and knocked out power and water across Kyiv overnight, as the death toll from Monday’s strike on an aid distribution site in Komyshuvakha climbed to 55. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia fired 36 ballistic missiles at Kyiv and its region overnight, plus 172 drones over 13 regions. Defences shot down nearly 150 drones and four missiles. The attacks damaged homes and businesses and closed a major bridge over the Dnipro River, days before talks in Abu Dhabi.

• At least nine were wounded, including a 14-year-old girl in Kyiv, in strikes that damaged homes and businesses and cut power and water.
• Officials closed Kyiv’s 816-metre Northern Bridge over the Dnipro; Russia’s Defence Ministry confirmed it targeted the bridge.
• In Komyshuvakha, nine more bodies were recovered in 24 hours, taking Monday’s strike toll to 55, with dozens still missing.
• Negotiators from Russia, Ukraine and the US meet Tuesday in Abu Dhabi for a fourth round of Trump-brokered talks, the first since February.

What Happened

The first salvo arrived shortly before 11 p.m. on Friday, when the Ukrainian Air Force reported ballistic missiles launched at Kyiv. Sirens sounded as residents headed for shelters, and more explosions followed around 1 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. on Saturday. By morning the picture was bigger: 36 ballistic missiles aimed at Kyiv and its region, and 172 drones over 13 regions.

The strikes damaged homes and businesses and cut power and water, authorities said. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said repairs were already underway on the 816-metre Northern Bridge and water pressure had been stabilised. Earlier, he called the city’s energy situation “extremely difficult, affecting the city’s heating and water supply systems.” Kateryna Korniichuk, 64, was at home with her granddaughter when an attack hit: “No sleep, no peace — nothing,” she told The Associated Press.

Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said the attacks damaged networks carrying electricity from nuclear plants to Kyiv and central regions, and other power facilities. Outages were worst in Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Kharkiv, Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk, separate from scheduled rolling blackouts. Russia’s Defence Ministry confirmed it targeted the Northern Bridge, saying it moved weaponry and military hardware, and said it also hit a Flamingo missile plant and a power station near Kyiv, and a substation in Zhytomyr.

Background and Context

The attack followed a direct warning from Ukraine’s president. Hours before, Zelenskyy said in his nightly address that Russia was preparing new attacks on energy targets, bridges and other infrastructure. The warning proved accurate within hours.

Earlier the same week, a Russian strike on an aid distribution site in Komyshuvakha, in the Zaporizhzhia region, hit a school-turned-aid site. Emergency services said on Saturday they had recovered nine more bodies in the previous 24 hours, taking the toll to 55, with dozens still missing on the sixth day of recovery. Mykola Krasnov, 72, was still looking for his wife: “She went to get humanitarian aid, and a three-ton bomb was dropped there. Where is she?” Read more: Russian bombs kill 26 at Ukraine aid centre school in Komyshuvakha, Kyiv says.

The war is now in its fifth year since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. US envoy Steve Witkoff has met both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Russia named a delegation for Abu Dhabi including Medinsky and GRU chief Kostyukov. Ukraine also struck back: one person was killed in Russia’s Belgorod region when a drone hit a home in Grayvoron, and Russia said it shot down 411 Ukrainian drones overnight.

Russian Missile Attack Leaves Kyiv Without Power and Water

Ballistic missiles are among Russia’s hardest weapons to intercept, and when aimed at a dense city, even debris can damage homes, schools and hospitals. The damage across Kyiv, alongside the closure of the Northern Bridge, shows the civilian cost is measured not only in injuries but in disruption: shattered windows, families in shelters, and districts without heat, light or water.

The energy damage is the deeper wound. By hitting the networks that carry electricity from nuclear plants to Kyiv and the central regions, the strikes threaten the heating and water systems of a city of millions as winter approaches. The attack also lands at a delicate moment for the Abu Dhabi talks: strikes on the capital days before negotiations are often read as a show of leverage.

Reactions and Quotes

On Saturday, President Zelenskyy said Russia was preparing for the trilateral negotiations by “launching ballistic missiles at Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.” He added: “When Russia tries to plunge Kyiv — a city of millions — and the entire country into a blackout, Ukraine must not be left to face this alone.” He urged greater US support from Congress and stronger sanctions.

Klitschko’s office confirmed the bridge closure and said repairs and water stabilisation were underway. Russia’s Defence Ministry called the operation aimed at military and energy targets and did not comment on the civilian casualties in Kyiv or the rising toll in Komyshuvakha.

Why It Matters

The attack matters for three reasons. First, Kyiv remains exposed to ballistic missile strikes despite years of investment in air defence, and 36 missiles in one night is a scale rarely faced. Second, it comes as winter approaches, when attacks on energy infrastructure can leave households without heat and power for days. Third, it sets the tone for the Abu Dhabi talks, testing whether diplomacy can advance while the bombing continues.

What Happens Next

Repair crews will spend the coming days boarding up shattered windows and restoring power and water in Kyiv. Air defence commanders will review how 36 ballistic missiles and 172 drones were tracked and intercepted, and whether more systems are needed ahead of winter. In Komyshuvakha, rescuers will keep searching the rubble for the dozens still missing. Attention will then shift to Abu Dhabi, where negotiators meet on Tuesday, November 10-11, for the fourth round of Trump-brokered talks — the first since Geneva in February.
