President Donald Trump ordered the Justice Department on Saturday to investigate Democrats, accusing them of “extortion at the highest level” for threatening administration officials, Republican donors and supporters with impeachment and imprisonment. The directive, posted on Truth Social on November 7, 2026, sharply escalates the confrontation between the president and the incoming Democratic Congress, which takes control of both chambers in January.

Key Points

• Trump posted on Truth Social on Saturday, November 7, 2026, ordering the Justice Department to “look into this criminal act, immediately!”
• He accused Democrats of threatening Attorney General Todd Blanche, other officials and Republican donors with impeachment and imprisonment.
• He singled out Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, accusing her of threatening young Americans who support Republican values, without naming specific remarks or providing evidence.
• The order came four days after Democrats won both chambers in the November 3 midterms, with 254 House seats called for Democrats to 162 for Republicans, per the Associated Press, and 19 races still undecided.
• Democrats have outlined oversight plans covering the Trump family’s business dealings, alleged corporate corruption, immigration enforcement and the Justice Department’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files.

What Happened

Trump issued the order in a Truth Social post on Saturday, writing that Democrats were “going around threatening a lot of people” with impeachment and “many other forms of punishment”. He called their actions a “criminal act” and said the Democrats behind the threats should face imprisonment themselves.

“By copy of this statement, I am ordering the Department of Justice to look into this criminal act, immediately!” Trump wrote. “The imprisonment should be against these EXTORTIONISTS, and Republicans should get smart, fast!”

Trump said Democrats had sent “threatening letters to many people, all innocent”, including threats against Attorney General Todd Blanche, and accused them of threatening Republican donors with imprisonment because of their political affiliations. He offered no evidence and named no specific crime or statute, and the Justice Department had not immediately responded or confirmed any investigation. In a follow-up post, Trump urged people to report the alleged threats to the department “IMMEDIATELY!”

Background

The order came four days after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The Associated Press had called 254 House seats for Democrats to 162 for Republicans, with 19 races still undecided, giving Democrats subpoena power and control of the committee gavels when the new Congress is sworn in during January.

Since the victory, senior Democrats have outlined ambitious oversight plans covering the Trump family’s business dealings, alleged corporate corruption, immigration enforcement and the Epstein files. Representative Robert Garcia of California, expected to chair the House Oversight Committee, posted “LAWYER UP” on X late on Tuesday night. Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland, in line to chair the House Judiciary Committee, has signalled corruption investigations, and Representatives Hank Johnson and Deborah Ross have publicly backed impeaching Attorney General Blanche. White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis said on Wednesday that sham investigations would work against the American people.

Why Trump Ordered the Justice Department to Investigate Democrats

The timing of Trump’s order is no accident. Democrats take control of Congress in January, and their oversight plans strike directly at the president’s family business, his attorney general and the Justice Department’s most politically sensitive files. By ordering the department to investigate the investigators, Trump is trying to reframe the coming oversight as a crime rather than a constitutional function.

The move also puts Attorney General Todd Blanche in a difficult position. Blanche is both the official Trump says Democrats are threatening and the head of the department Trump is ordering to act. Any inquiry opened on the president’s say-so would immediately face questions about whether it was launched on evidence or on a presidential instruction delivered through social media. Trump has long accused his opponents of weaponising the justice system, a charge he repeated on Saturday, calling the Democrats’ threats “Weaponization and Lawfare at another level”.

Reactions and Quotes

Trump’s own words set the tone. “The Democrats are going around threatening a lot of people,” he wrote, adding: “By copy of this statement, I am ordering the Department of Justice to look into this criminal act, immediately!”

Democrats’ stance was already on the record before the post. Garcia’s two-word message on X, “LAWYER UP”, captured the incoming majority’s mood, while Raskin has signalled that corruption investigations will be a priority once Democrats hold the gavel. The White House pushed back earlier in the week, with spokeswoman Lauren Bis saying on Wednesday that sham investigations would work against the American people. The Justice Department had not immediately responded to the president’s order.

Why It Matters

A president publicly directing the Justice Department to investigate the opposition party is a rare and consequential step. The department has long operated under norms designed to keep criminal investigations free from political direction, and a presidential order delivered on social media tests those norms in full public view.

The stakes extend beyond the politics of the moment. If the department opens an inquiry, it will have to show what evidence, if any, supports an extortion case against lawmakers threatening impeachment — a constitutionally protected power. If it declines, the president’s order will stand as a public instruction that went unheeded.

What Happens Next

The first question is whether the Justice Department responds at all, and if so, whether it opens any formal inquiry or treats the president’s post as rhetoric. Watch for a statement from the department or from Attorney General Blanche in the coming days. Democrats, meanwhile, are expected to press ahead with their oversight plans when they take control in January. Any move by the department against Democratic lawmakers would almost certainly draw legal challenges and a furious political response.
