ANKARA — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged US President Donald Trump on Saturday to end Iran-US tensions through diplomacy, telling him the dispute should be settled at the negotiating table rather than on the battlefield.

The Erdogan Trump phone call, confirmed by Türkiye's Directorate of Communications, came at a delicate moment: Washington and Tehran have traded cautious signals about a possible deal after months of war, and American, Ukrainian and Russian officials are due in Abu Dhabi in days.

Key Points

• Erdogan told Trump on Saturday, November 7, that Iran-US tensions must end and disputes should be settled diplomatically.
• Türkiye will continue its peace efforts, Ankara said.
• On Ukraine, Erdogan said he hopes intensified diplomacy will produce results and pledged Türkiye will keep engaging Kyiv and Moscow.
• The call came days before US-Ukraine-Russia talks in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11, a day after Trump said Washington was "talking to" Iran.
• Erdogan thanked Trump for backing the Organisation of Turkic States summit.

What Happened

According to Türkiye's Directorate of Communications, Erdogan and Trump spoke by telephone on Saturday, November 7, 2026. The Turkish presidency's account put Iran first: Erdogan said tensions between Iran and the United States must end and disputes should be resolved through diplomatic channels, and that Ankara would continue its peace efforts.

They also discussed the war in Ukraine. Erdogan said he hopes intensified diplomacy will produce results and that Türkiye will keep contributing to initiatives to end the conflict, stressing greater engagement with both Kyiv and Moscow. He also said he expects bilateral cooperation to keep growing. Trump had said on Friday, November 6, that Washington was "talking to" Iran, and Vice President JD Vance had said earlier in the week that the United States had made "progress" in talks with Iran, with no deadline set for a deal.

Background and Context

The United States and Iran have been at war since February 28, 2026, now in its ninth month. The fighting has included American strikes on Iranian targets, including defensive strikes on Qeshm Island, and Iranian and Houthi attacks in the region. A naval blockade remains in force, and the Strait of Hormuz — through which much of the world's oil moves — has been at the centre of the confrontation.

Despite the fighting, diplomacy has never fully stopped. Vance has spent the past fortnight in indirect negotiations with Iran, holding near-daily discussions with Qatar's prime minister and other mediators, and sent a letter to Iran's security chief Mohsen Rezaei proposing a return to direct talks. Qatar's prime minister said at Oxford University on Saturday that mediation continues and "significant progress" has been made. Vance has been leading the secret backchannel talks with Iran, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has also asked China to use its influence with Tehran. Türkiye's mediator role is well established: Ankara has hosted talks before, keeps working relations with Washington and Tehran, and helped broker the 2022 Black Sea grain deal.

Erdogan Trump Phone Call Puts Diplomacy First

The significance of the Erdogan Trump phone call lies less in any single sentence than in its timing and messenger. Erdogan is one of the few leaders who can speak credibly to both Trump and Tehran, and his public call for diplomacy gives the American president cover to keep talking while the military option stays on the table. For Trump, a NATO ally publicly urging a negotiated settlement reinforces the diplomatic track as hardliners in both capitals push escalation. Erdogan raising Ukraine in the same conversation also matters: with talks due in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11, his message is an early bid to shape the agenda — and a signal to Moscow and Kyiv that Türkiye intends to stay involved.

Reactions and Quotes

Türkiye's Directorate of Communications said Erdogan told Trump that tensions between Iran and the United States must end and disputes should be resolved through diplomatic channels, and that Ankara would continue its peace efforts. On Ukraine, he said he hopes intensified diplomacy will produce results and stressed greater engagement with both Kyiv and Moscow.

Trump had set the tone a day earlier: asked about Iran on Friday, November 6, he said Washington was "talking to" Iran, signalling the diplomatic channel remains open even as the United States keeps its military options ready. Vance, speaking on Monday, November 2, said the United States had made "progress" in talks with Iran and had set no deadline before strikes might resume. Qatar's prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, said on Saturday that mediation continues and "significant progress" has been made: "We cannot wait to reach a perfect agreement; we hope to reach a good agreement."

Why It Matters

The window for diplomacy is narrow and the stakes are high. The US-Iran war has already disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, pushed oil prices sharply higher and drawn in regional actors from Israel to the Houthis in Yemen. A deal would ease pressure on energy markets and reduce the risk of a wider regional war; failure risks a return to heavy strikes. For Ukraine, Erdogan's intervention is a reminder that the diplomatic effort is not confined to Washington, Kyiv and Moscow: Türkiye's engagement with both sides gives it a genuine, if limited, ability to nudge things forward. Trump has also turned to China to help press Tehran toward a deal, and the picture now is of a multi-track diplomatic push converging on the same question: can the wars be ended at the table before they escalate again?

What Happens Next

All eyes now turn to Abu Dhabi, where US, Ukrainian and Russian officials meet on November 10-11 to discuss a possible settlement in Ukraine. Erdogan's call has put Türkiye's position — more engagement with both Kyiv and Moscow — on the table before they begin. On Iran, the coming days will show whether the signals harden into something concrete: mediators in Qatar continue their shuttle work, the backchannel led by Vance keeps running, and watchers await any announcement of a working-level meeting between American and Iranian delegates, discussed but not yet held. Türkiye's parliament recently ratified the Mecca defence pact with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, a reminder that Ankara is also reshaping its own security partnerships. If the Abu Dhabi talks produce movement, expect Erdogan to claim a share of the credit; if they stall, the diplomatic window may close and the military track take over again.
