Hegseth Financial Disclosure Raises Questions on Wife's Lockheed-Linked Pay

The Hegseth financial disclosure review has raised fresh questions about the Defence Secretary's household finances, after records showed his wife was paid for consulting by a firm that counts Lockheed Martin among its clients, and six-figure book income he once reported has since vanished from his filings without explanation. The findings, published November 5, 2026 by Military.com, which reviewed four of Pete Hegseth's federal filings, establish no wrongdoing. But they land as the Pentagon chief already faces a House impeachment push and speculation about his future.

Key Points

  • Hegseth's annual disclosure, signed May 14, 2025, lists three organisations that paid his wife Jennifer for consulting: Watchtower Strategy LLC, the America First Policy Institute and Morrison Cohen LLC.
  • Watchtower, chaired by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, counted Lockheed Martin — the Pentagon's largest contractor — among its 2025 clients, according to Politico.
  • His December 2024 nominee disclosure reported six-figure book royalties and advances worth hundreds of thousands of dollars; in the May 2025 filing, every book entry is gone.
  • The Pentagon says the Hegseths are "in full compliance with all ethical laws and regulations".
  • Nothing in the records establishes a procurement intervention, a prohibited payment or any official action favouring a private client.

What Happened

Military.com examined four documents: the December 2024 nominee disclosure, the January 2025 ethics agreement, an April 2025 stock transaction report and the annual disclosure signed in May. No dollar amounts appear, because federal rules require officials only to list a spouse's income sources above $1,000, not the sums involved. A single entry could represent a few thousand dollars — or millions.

Watchtower launched in January 2025, shortly after Hegseth was sworn in on January 25. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy serves as chair. Watchtower says Jennifer Hegseth's work had nothing to do with its clients. "She has not interfaced with any clients nor does she provide any advice to Watchtower on defense matters," a spokesperson told Politico, saying she "assisted us in navigating conservative TV media."

Background: Three Links to Lockheed

The Lockheed connection runs through the household in three separate ways, and the records keep them apart. First, Watchtower counted Lockheed among its clients in 2025, according to Politico. Lockheed declined to discuss the firm, and no filing connects the engagement to Jennifer Hegseth's work. Second, her late father was a Lockheed Martin executive, according to the New York Times, and she used to own Lockheed stock directly.

Fortune reported she held shares in Lockheed, Northrop Grumman and Honeywell, all sold on February 7, 2025, in ranges of $1,001 to $50,000 per holding, weeks after her husband's confirmation. The government obligated more than $66 billion to Lockheed in fiscal year 2025, the same year Jennifer Hegseth received consulting income from Watchtower, according to a Daily Beast review of federal spending data — the scale of the company the Pentagon's leader oversees.

Hegseth Financial Disclosure: The Book Income That Vanished

The second half of the story is what the filings no longer show. His December 2024 nominee disclosure reported substantial book income: royalties of $100,001 to $1 million plus a $150,000 advance for Battle for the American Mind, and a $348,000 advance plus six-figure royalties for The War on Warriors.

His January 10, 2025 ethics agreement said he received royalties from HarperCollins, Center Street and Simon and Schuster, and committed him to stay out of matters involving those publishers unless ethics officials authorised it. In the annual disclosure he signed on May 14, which covers 2025, every book entry is gone.

Ethics guidance says intellectual property stays reportable when worth over $1,000 at year-end or producing over $200 a year. Royalty rights can be sold, assigned, terminated or dry up below the thresholds. Which of those happened here is not stated in any public record, and the absence is not itself a violation — but it is a disappearance the documents do not explain. A Fox News pension plan and his wife's Fox deferred compensation plan, worth up to $1.25 million, are likewise absent. Distributions or rollovers could explain both; the filings do not say.

Reactions: Pentagon Insists the Hegseths Are in Full Compliance

The Pentagon pushed back hard. "Every DOW official, including Secretary Hegseth and Mrs. Hegseth, is in full compliance with all ethical laws and regulations. Any claims otherwise are false," chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell told Military.com.

What has changed since the year the disclosure covers is Jennifer Hegseth's status. President Donald Trump's Executive Order 14417, signed August 3, 2026, created the President's Military Spouse Commission and made the defence secretary's spouse its chair. The commission's charter makes non-federal members special government employees, appointed as experts or consultants under 5 U.S.C. § 3109.

Special government employees fall under federal conflict-of-interest law. Whether she was appointed under that provision, what ethics screening accompanied it, and whether her consulting continued into her federal roles are questions the records do not answer.

Why It Matters

Federal law reaches a spouse's finances. Under 18 U.S.C. 208, an official may not take part in a government matter that would directly affect a spouse's financial interests. Hegseth's own ethics agreement states that his spouse's interests are imputed to him. A separate impartiality rule, 5 C.F.R. 2635.502, covers situations where a spouse consults for an outside organisation. Neither rule makes a payment improper by itself. Both turn on facts not yet public.

The Pentagon awards tens of billions of dollars a year to Lockheed Martin, so gaps in that record leave the public with less to go on as Congress scrutinises the secretary.

What Happens Next

No investigation has been announced, and no ethics complaint is known. The open questions are straightforward: whether Jennifer Hegseth still works for Watchtower, whether any of her consulting continued after she took on federal roles, what happened to the book rights, and whether ethics officials reviewed the arrangements.

The disclosures add to the pressure on a secretary already under fire. The House is set to vote on Hegseth's impeachment next week, and the president has been weighing the Pentagon chief's future after the midterms. Hegseth has also been reshaping his senior team, firing the Pentagon's top planner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who paid Jennifer Hegseth for consulting?
His May 2025 disclosure lists three: Watchtower Strategy LLC, the America First Policy Institute and Morrison Cohen LLC. Amounts were not disclosed.

How much money did she receive?
The filings do not say: rules require only listing a spouse's income sources above $1,000, not the amounts, so one entry could cover a few thousand dollars or millions.

Did Lockheed Martin pay her directly?
No. Lockheed was a client of Watchtower, the firm that paid her; no document connects Lockheed to her work.

Has Hegseth broken any ethics law?
Nothing in the records reviewed establishes a violation, a prohibited payment or any official action favouring a private client. The Pentagon says the Hegseths are in full compliance.

What happened to Hegseth's book income?
It was in his December 2024 nominee disclosure and gone from the annual disclosure signed in May 2025. No public record explains why; royalty rights can be sold, assigned, terminated or fall below reporting thresholds.
